body![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZ5TxRxXsZj4CHKT5DBo4fUCTAQY1axztJz6VQ5mH9LG8/image.png) In April this year, news broke that there may be a [new “centrist” party](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/apr/07/new-political-party-break-mould-westminster-uk-brexit) funded in part by LoveFilm founder Simon Banks and mooted to include the backing of [Tony Blair](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/apr/10/tony-blairs-son-has-links-to-possible-new-british-centrist-party) and [David Miliband](https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/centrist-party-tony-blair-david-miliband-corbyn-labour-suggested-name-a8297851.html), as well as other [wealthy donors](https://www.totalpolitics.com/articles/diary/new-centrist-party-taps-donors-spinners-and-euan-blair). At the time, this was received with little fanfare and generally regarded as unlikely to happen, akin perhaps to a wealthy entrepreneur stating his or her interest in bidding for an unnamed Premier League football club, it had not yet reached the stage where anybody takes it seriously. However, recent news has suggested that it may be time to sit up and take notice. #### A Labour break up Two weeks ago, independent news site Skwawkbox exclusively [revealed](https://skwawkbox.org/2018/07/07/e-mids-lab-mp-tells-members-breakaway-party-to-launch/) that a Labour MP from the East Midlands area had told constituents at a constituency labour party meeting that a group of 12-20 Labour MPs are due to imminently announce their ‘splitting off’ to form a new centrist party. Skwawkbox and the rest of the media are now reporting that [Vince Cable may be involved](https://skwawkbox.org/2018/07/22/centrists-party-allies-resigning-in-preparation-for-split/) in a potential marriage between the Lib Dems (or certain members of the Lib Dems) and this new centrist party. Cable has added fuel to this fire with a subsequent [“non-denial”](https://videopress.com/v/0pXFAOzH). Whatever shape this particular venture takes, it appears there may be a new box capable of being ticked on your voting card at the next general election, and so we ask: what will this mean for Labour and Corbyn at the next election? #### A strong labour party First, let’s look back at the last election, in which Corbyn’s Labour, in the face of an historic smear campaign by the media and even Labour MPs, secured Labour’s [biggest gain](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/jeremy-corbyn-election-result-vote-share-increased-1945-clement-attlee-a7781706.html) in vote share since Clement Attlee in 1945, transforming the Labour Party into a viable opposition. Support for the party has not slowed down since the election, with a recent [Opinium poll](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/14/labour-opens-up-biggest-lead-over-tories-since-general-election) for the Observer putting Labour on 40%, with the Tories at 36%; the biggest Labour lead since shortly after the general election. Since Corbyn became leader, Labour Party membership has risen from 200,000 to roughly 570,000, which potentially makes Labour the [biggest political party](https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-party-membership-soars-by-33000-in-four-days-since-general-election_uk_59400feee4b0e84514ee930f) in Western Europe. In short, the Labour Party has the best chance of election since New Labour’s demise, so why are “12-20” Labour MPs apparently so keen to shift to the right and potentially start a new party? #### ![Tug of war.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWARWqtNCa8nLRpUjS9gBTatTGs3EPJkZUEQ95e1CYdwn/Tug%20of%20war.jpg)Competing ideologies The answer is that the Labour party was, in previous years, co-opted by the centre-right, culminating in the Blair administration taking the party away from its natural position as one which fights for the rights of the working and middle classes against the inherent inequalities produced by unfettered capitalism. Many in the parliamentary Labour party, in contrast to the Labour membership and the general public, are still married to a Blairite neo-liberal agenda and this does not match with Labour under Corbyn and so, as they cannot win democratically (i.e. by challenging his party leadership again), they have been attempting, via failed coups and endless smear campaigns, to claw back the leadership of the party. This battle continues, with recent smears being made by [Wes Streeting MP](http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/16372010.local-mp-criticises-national-labour-antisemitism-definition-change/), [John Woodcock MP](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/18/mp-john-woodcock-quits-labour-amid-disciplinary-case) upon his resignation and most notably by Margaret Hodge MP who has reportedly [doubled-down](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-44923664/margaret-hodge-defends-anti-semitism-attack-on-corbyn) on calling Jeremy Corbyn an [“anti-semitic racist”](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/17/labour-agrees-to-fresh-antisemitism-consultation-after-stormy-debate) following a decision by Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to approve the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s [definition of antisemitism](https://www.holocaustremembrance.com/working-definition-antisemitism) into its code of conduct on 17 July, but with some potential amendments to examples of antisemitic behaviour that could have inadvertently led to [legitimate criticism of Israel being deemed as anti-semitic](https://www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/2018/07/17/corbyn-receives-a-huge-boost-from-36-jewish-groups-worldwide-which-is-awkward-for-the-media/). One Jewish professor on Twitter saw through the smear tactics when he replied to Margaret Hodge MP as follows: ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcGfgQ3Xb1tuRgS16fbA2DyzTBANrEznjLoXRDHg547Ga/image.png) In conflating considering a slightly amended definition of antisemitism (about which there is [not even full agreement within the Jewish community](https://israelpalestinenews.org/36-jewish-groups-defend-israel-critics-from-false-accusations-of-anti-semitism/)) with actually being anti-semitic, Hodge demonstrated the depths that some MPs will sink to in order to undermine Corbyn’s leadership. #### What’s on offer? Streeting, Hodge, Woodcock and the other potential 20 Labour MPs thinking of joining forces with Blair, Miliband, Cable and this new centrist party do not really believe that Jeremy Corbyn is a communist, a spy for the soviet union or that he wants to take us back to the ’70s, these are just the exaggerated lies they spread in order to try to [convince the public](https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/uncategorised/think-jeremy-corbyn-is-a-loser-oh-dear-youve-been-brainwashed/18/08/) not to trust Jeremy Corbyn. This is absolutely necessary as a tactic by those who wish to maintain the status quo, because they cannot argue against the logic, merits and popularity of the [progressive manifesto](https://labour.org.uk/manifesto/) that the Labour party is offering, such as re-nationalising the rail network and part of the energy market, capping household fuel bills, more public holidays, better workers’ rights, the abolishment of tuition fees and reintroduction of maintenance grants, proper funding for the NHS, the introduction of a National Care Service, a real carer’s allowance, a ban on zero-hours contracts and unpaid internships, employers being banned from only recruiting from overseas, the implementation of a real living wage, more paternity and maternity leave and protections, a ban on fracking, a 20:1 limit on the gap between the highest and lowest paid workers in any company wishing to have a Government contract, a triple-lock on pensions, rent rises capped at inflation; I could go on for a lot longer. What will the new centrist party offer except for Hillary Clinton-esque empty campaign slogans, clichés and virtue signalling? We don’t yet know, but we can guess nothing but the same type of “Tory-lite” that failed to win Ed Miliband an easily winnable election against David Cameron. The new centrist party’s main goal may perhaps be simply to prevent a Corbyn government from being realised, to ensure that no government actually governs for the benefit of the electorate and not just corporations and the rich, even if that means splitting the vote and potentially keeping the Tories in power. Drawing a line between Jeremy Corbyn and the Conservative Party still puts you firmly on the centre-right when you forget the labels and concentrate on the policy. Since when did not deliberately underfunding education, the NHS, policing and other public programmes become ‘radical’? Reallocating expenditure towards institutions and programs that society needs rather than spending on tax cuts for corporations and trusts, bailing out bankers and waging needless wars is neither radical nor left-wing. These are policies that reside in the centre of politics, but you will likely not find the new ‘centrist’ party supporting them. #### Heading for change Since the 80’s in particular, the business class (those who own and run large corporations) and the political class (those who inhabit positions of political power) have merged and the net effect is that politicians in general now simply serve big business and not the people. This is true throughout the West, in particular. When it comes to regulation of big business and macroeconomic policy there has been little difference between most parties to hold office. Of course, the rhetoric is not the same, but the policy often is. No party has ensured that the rich pay their fair share in taxes, all parties have overseen a dilution of workers’ rights and all parties have been equally eager to facilitate the sale of weapons to despotic regimes abroad. We have now reached the point that, with varying degrees of accuracy, the majority of the working and middle classes realise that they have not been getting a fair deal and are begging for change. Brexit was an example of this, as was Trump, as is the surge in support for the left and the right. It is not clear in which direction the political pendulum will swing, but change is coming and in order to prevent it politicians around the world are stepping up the distraction tactics, the propaganda and the trickery to keep working people fighting amongst themselves, rather than recognising the real cause of the current inequality we face and following that logic to vote for a party with an agenda similar to Labour’s today. #### Brainwashed masses However brazen they may be, the smear campaigns do have an effect and there are therefore many, many people in the UK who will gladly vote for a new centrist party because they despise Corbyn for his perceived radicalness or even believe he is a communist or traitor of some description. Along with those misinformed voters are those who have been manipulated by neo-liberal propaganda to believe that it is the “other” who is the source of all of their problems and if we only restore the nation to its former world-leading glory, bring back our indefinable “British culture” and kick out all the foreigners, everything will be amazing again. This latter category, according to recent polls, makes up a significant portion of the population. One [poll carried out by YouGov](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-eu-poll/british-reject-mays-brexit-plan-some-turn-to-boris-and-far-right-poll-idUSKBN1KC0EU) on behalf of the Sunday Times suggests that around 38% of people would vote for a new right-wing party that is more committed to a hard-Brexit than the Conservatives as of today, but more worryingly, **almost 25% would support an explicitly far-right, anti-immigrant, anti-Islam party**. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaH9yEqWP5GYpyzsRr93oMt6dg6fid7rDCZFckZ3pCBB1/image.png) #### Unavoidable assent of Boris Johnson What the poll also revealed, is that only 16% of voters back May to handle Brexit, whilst 34% would prefer Boris Johnson, who recently [resigned](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/09/boris-johnson-resigns-as-foreign-secretary-brexit) as foreign secretary. With talk of yet [another new political party](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jul/23/new-party-brexit-far-right-ukip) surfacing to take advantage of this surge in right-wing populism by filling the void left for those who are fanatical about a hard-Brexit, it is patently clear that in order to avoid a crushing defeat at the next general election **the Tory party has no choice but to replace Theresa May with Boris Johnson**, or another hard-Brexiteer such as Jacob Rees-Mogg. #### Another hung parliament and no steps forward If there is to be a general election in the near future, it is likely that we will see Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour vs a new centrist party (including or excluding the Lib Dems as we know them today) and a reinvigorated Conservative Party with a fresh narrative about saving Brexit, under Boris Johnson. Even accounting for Tony Blair’s potentially toxic involvement in any new party, it is undoubtedly true that Labour’s vote would be split and Corbyn would have to pull off a miracle to win an outright majority. Whether or not Corbyn could form a coalition is irrelevant, because any coalition would be prevented from implementing the agenda needed to tear the Government away from the controlling hands of the corporate world. That in itself would be a victory for the proposed centrist party and its backers and defeat for the interests of the ordinary voter. If their propaganda cannot be widely exposed, the prospect of a real progressive government is likely to be diminished for the foreseeable future.

"body": "![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZ5TxRxXsZj4CHKT5DBo4fUCTAQY1axztJz6VQ5mH9LG8/image.png)\n\nIn April this year, news broke that there may be a [new “centrist” party](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/apr/07/new-political-party-break-mould-westminster-uk-brexit) funded in part by LoveFilm founder Simon Banks and mooted to include the backing of [Tony Blair](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/apr/10/tony-blairs-son-has-links-to-possible-new-british-centrist-party) and [David Miliband](https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/centrist-party-tony-blair-david-miliband-corbyn-labour-suggested-name-a8297851.html), as well as other [wealthy donors](https://www.totalpolitics.com/articles/diary/new-centrist-party-taps-donors-spinners-and-euan-blair).\n\nAt the time, this was received with little fanfare and generally regarded as unlikely to happen, akin perhaps to a wealthy entrepreneur stating his or her interest in bidding for an unnamed Premier League football club, it had not yet reached the stage where anybody takes it seriously.\n\nHowever, recent news has suggested that it may be time to sit up and take notice.\n\n#### A Labour break up\n\nTwo weeks ago, independent news site Skwawkbox exclusively [revealed](https://skwawkbox.org/2018/07/07/e-mids-lab-mp-tells-members-breakaway-party-to-launch/) that a Labour MP from the East Midlands area had told constituents at a constituency labour party meeting that a group of 12-20 Labour MPs are due to imminently announce their ‘splitting off’ to form a new centrist party.\n\nSkwawkbox and the rest of the media are now reporting that [Vince Cable may be involved](https://skwawkbox.org/2018/07/22/centrists-party-allies-resigning-in-preparation-for-split/) in a potential marriage between the Lib Dems (or certain members of the Lib Dems) and this new centrist party. Cable has added fuel to this fire with a subsequent [“non-denial”](https://videopress.com/v/0pXFAOzH).\n\nWhatever shape this particular venture takes, it appears there may be a new box capable of being ticked on your voting card at the next general election, and so we ask: what will this mean for Labour and Corbyn at the next election?\n\n#### A strong labour party\n\nFirst, let’s look back at the last election, in which Corbyn’s Labour, in the face of an historic smear campaign by the media and even Labour MPs, secured Labour’s [biggest gain](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/jeremy-corbyn-election-result-vote-share-increased-1945-clement-attlee-a7781706.html) in vote share since Clement Attlee in 1945, transforming the Labour Party into a viable opposition.\n\nSupport for the party has not slowed down since the election, with a recent [Opinium poll](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/14/labour-opens-up-biggest-lead-over-tories-since-general-election) for the Observer putting Labour on 40%, with the Tories at 36%; the biggest Labour lead since shortly after the general election.\n\nSince Corbyn became leader, Labour Party membership has risen from 200,000 to roughly 570,000, which potentially makes Labour the [biggest political party](https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-party-membership-soars-by-33000-in-four-days-since-general-election_uk_59400feee4b0e84514ee930f) in Western Europe.\n\nIn short, the Labour Party has the best chance of election since New Labour’s demise, so why are “12-20” Labour MPs apparently so keen to shift to the right and potentially start a new party?\n\n#### ![Tug of war.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWARWqtNCa8nLRpUjS9gBTatTGs3EPJkZUEQ95e1CYdwn/Tug%20of%20war.jpg)Competing ideologies\n\nThe answer is that the Labour party was, in previous years, co-opted by the centre-right, culminating in the Blair administration taking the party away from its natural position as one which fights for the rights of the working and middle classes against the inherent inequalities produced by unfettered capitalism.\n\nMany in the parliamentary Labour party, in contrast to the Labour membership and the general public, are still married to a Blairite neo-liberal agenda and this does not match with Labour under Corbyn and so, as they cannot win democratically (i.e. by challenging his party leadership again), they have been attempting, via failed coups and endless smear campaigns, to claw back the leadership of the party.\n\nThis battle continues, with recent smears being made by [Wes Streeting MP](http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/16372010.local-mp-criticises-national-labour-antisemitism-definition-change/), [John Woodcock MP](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/18/mp-john-woodcock-quits-labour-amid-disciplinary-case) upon his resignation and most notably by Margaret Hodge MP who has reportedly [doubled-down](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-44923664/margaret-hodge-defends-anti-semitism-attack-on-corbyn) on calling Jeremy Corbyn an [“anti-semitic racist”](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/17/labour-agrees-to-fresh-antisemitism-consultation-after-stormy-debate) following a decision by Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to approve the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s [definition of antisemitism](https://www.holocaustremembrance.com/working-definition-antisemitism) into its code of conduct on 17 July, but with some potential amendments to examples of antisemitic behaviour that could have inadvertently led to [legitimate criticism of Israel being deemed as anti-semitic](https://www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/2018/07/17/corbyn-receives-a-huge-boost-from-36-jewish-groups-worldwide-which-is-awkward-for-the-media/).\n\nOne Jewish professor on Twitter saw through the smear tactics when he replied to Margaret Hodge MP as follows:\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcGfgQ3Xb1tuRgS16fbA2DyzTBANrEznjLoXRDHg547Ga/image.png)\n\nIn conflating considering a slightly amended definition of antisemitism (about which there is [not even full agreement within the Jewish community](https://israelpalestinenews.org/36-jewish-groups-defend-israel-critics-from-false-accusations-of-anti-semitism/)) with actually being anti-semitic, Hodge demonstrated the depths that some MPs will sink to in order to undermine Corbyn’s leadership.\n\n#### What’s on offer?\n\nStreeting, Hodge, Woodcock and the other potential 20 Labour MPs thinking of joining forces with Blair, Miliband, Cable and this new centrist party do not really believe that Jeremy Corbyn is a communist, a spy for the soviet union or that he wants to take us back to the ’70s, these are just the exaggerated lies they spread in order to try to [convince the public](https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/uncategorised/think-jeremy-corbyn-is-a-loser-oh-dear-youve-been-brainwashed/18/08/) not to trust Jeremy Corbyn.\n\nThis is absolutely necessary as a tactic by those who wish to maintain the status quo, because they cannot argue against the logic, merits and popularity of the [progressive manifesto](https://labour.org.uk/manifesto/) that the Labour party is offering, such as re-nationalising the rail network and part of the energy market, capping household fuel bills, more public holidays, better workers’ rights, the abolishment of tuition fees and reintroduction of maintenance grants, proper funding for the NHS, the introduction of a National Care Service, a real carer’s allowance, a ban on zero-hours contracts and unpaid internships, employers being banned from only recruiting from overseas, the implementation of a real living wage, more paternity and maternity leave and protections, a ban on fracking, a 20:1 limit on the gap between the highest and lowest paid workers in any company wishing to have a Government contract, a triple-lock on pensions, rent rises capped at inflation; I could go on for a lot longer.\n\nWhat will the new centrist party offer except for Hillary Clinton-esque empty campaign slogans, clichés and virtue signalling? We don’t yet know, but we can guess nothing but the same type of “Tory-lite” that failed to win Ed Miliband an easily winnable election against David Cameron.\n\nThe new centrist party’s main goal may perhaps be simply to prevent a Corbyn government from being realised, to ensure that no government actually governs for the benefit of the electorate and not just corporations and the rich, even if that means splitting the vote and potentially keeping the Tories in power.\n\nDrawing a line between Jeremy Corbyn and the Conservative Party still puts you firmly on the centre-right when you forget the labels and concentrate on the policy. body![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWVxd3xzS7UsRLsPbJw4h1H3FoWFQZMUbthDr4om7mE45/image.png) What’s the difference between a liberal and a parrot? One of them mindlessly repeats whatever its owners say and the other is a colourful, now domesticated bird, originating from the tropical climates of the Southern Hemisphere. This does not describe all liberals, of course, especially coming from someone who self-identifies as one, however, too many people who casually consider themselves to be “left-wing” appear to have chosen to self-identify as a parrot lately. ### Parrot Test Take the following test and see whether you’re a liberal or a parrot: Did/do you: * begrudgingly vote for Labour in the last election but you “really don’t like Jeremy Corbyn” for reasons you are not able to coherently explain? * believe that Hillary Clinton should have won the US election but you cannot name a single one of her policies? * believe that Putin personally ordered Russian spies to (somehow unsuccessfully) take out an ex-Russian spy in the UK (whom he had already had in a Russian prison and then released via a spy-swap) in a manner which would reveal immediately Russia’s longstanding secret door handle painting nerve agent assassination training camp? * believe that finding out who leaked legitimate evidence of corruption and election tampering by the Clinton campaign in the 2016 primary elections is more important than the corruption and election tampering it exposed? * believe that Barack Obama was a good President for ordinary people and introduced free healthcare to Americans? * believe that the UK and America go to war purely for humanitarian reasons and aim to spread democracy? * read the Guardian and think that it makes you superior to those scumbag “Daily Fail” readers, but you never disagree with any of the Guardian’s conclusions? If you answered, “yes” to any of the above, then I am sorry to inform you that you are officially a parrot and not a liberal. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmedDPUshKZFUexn8hLHHWSPQpU1EXZoJ3MaPxNo7KKK6C/image.png) ### Jumping to conclusions Some of the factual questions above may turn out upon further investigation to be true, but the point is that there is not currently sufficient evidence available to take such positions and if you do, then you are being intellectually lazy. Some of the others are demonstrably untrue, but this is not the point of this article and hopefully, by the end, you will want to do your own research. A true liberal should question the narrative given to them by the media and the Government and they should not believe stories without evidence or support political candidates because that candidate is aligned with the party or cause to which they also belong. Liberals care about truth and policy, not tabloid gossip and identity politics. If you agree with your favourite newspaper or website about absolutely everything, then you’re not reading widely enough. ### The convenience of a false dichotomy Too many people across the political spectrum are opting for an easy life and organising information received, such as news stories, politically speaking, into categories of “left” and “right”, choosing then to instinctively agree with the position that accords most with their overarching political views, rather than thinking critically about the story they are reading. Well, life is not that simple. Donald Trump is a lying charlatan, but he has said many true things, especially on the campaign trail. For example, Donald Trump said that NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) was a bad deal for ordinary Americans and had cost jobs. That is true and he was right to say that. You see, just because someone you generally disagree with said something, that doesn’t make it incorrect by default, you need to consider the actual content of what is being said and the logical and evidential position for it, in order to come to a conclusion. The same is true of people with whom you generally agree. ### You're not alone This need to organise our lives into narratives and act in a tribal manner is obviously part of human nature and it is not unique to the left. As an example, sticking with “The Donald”, watch [this hilarious video](https://www.facebook.com/soflo/videos/1248561588518426/?t=0 ) (which must be taken with a pinch of salt, but which emphasises the point) where people appear to agree with quotes from Hitler just because they were presented as Trump quotes, only to change their tune when they realise the true author. Again, it is the content which matters, not the purveyor of it. The majority of the population who claim to care about politics appear to be playing for a team and repeating its talking points instead of taking policy and evidence-based positions, which is how we should all act if we wish to obtain the best outcomes. ### Reliable truths Taking a step back for a moment, as the great [Matt Dillahunty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Dillahunty) often asks theists when they seek to rely on faith for any particular claim they are making, “is faith a reliable path to truth?” ([This video](https://youtu.be/F4TCiL-YkWc) is not safe for work) Apply this logic to the humble parrot: Is believing everything that fits within your existing narrative because it is more comfortable for you, or because it comes from the party you belong to or the newspaper you like, a reliable path to truth? Clearly not. Therefore, just like the theist clinging onto his faith in the above video, this will only get you to the right answer some of the time. That makes it unreliable. ### Real examples? Let’s look at how a parrot and then a liberal, might react to the recent story that Russia is guilty of attempting to assassinate Sergei Skripal in the UK earlier this year. If you are a parrot, your thought process might have gone something like this: *“(A) Boris Johnson said that only the Russians could have made the nerve agent used in the attack;* *(B) I don’t like Boris Johnson’s policies but this is a matter of national security and Boris Johnson or the Government for that matter, would not lie about something like this;* *(C) Russia are the bad guys and our enemy and the main victim was a Russian spy who had defected, it does seem like something Russia would do;* *(D) I read in the Guardian numerous times that Russia was behind the attack.* *(E) Time passes and you remember the incident as the Russian attack without ever seeing any evidence of it.”* If you are a real liberal, your thought process is as follows: *“(A) There has been an attack in Salisbury using a chemical weapon of some kind and the person killed was previously a Russian spy, this is interesting;* *(B) The Government have immediately rushed to blame Russia and everyone is talking about how to respond and show force, but there has been no evidence presented for this conclusion so I will withhold my judgement until that happens;* *(C) The Government and the news are all saying that this “novichok” is “of a type developed by Russia”, but that sounds exactly like the type of thing you would say if you wanted to give the impression to people who only read headlines, that Russia was behind the attack, when in fact all you are saying is that this type of nerve agent was originally developed by the Soviet Union many years ago – that doesn’t mean that Russia made this particular one and even if they did, that doesn’t prove they carried out the attack;* *(D) Why is the Guardian just parroting the Government talking points and not asking questions, has nobody learned from Iraq not to just swallow the official narrative without evidence?* *(E) I am not willing to go along with the narrative presented without seeing clear evidence of it.”* Again, I do not wish to dwell on any specific story here, but if anyone wants to look at the details of the Skripal story in-depth and specifically at the complete lack of evidence provided for the claim that it was perpetrated by the Russian-state (or indeed that a novichok was even used), then I suggest reading [Craig Murray’s fantastic stories](https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/) on this topic, [this one](https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2018/07/the-holes-in-the-official-skripal-story/) most recently. ### Do your research or don’t come to conclusions To be an actual liberal, you don’t need to research everything in great detail, you don’t need to research anything if you don’t want to, you just need to be honest with yourself and accept that believing things without sufficient evidence just because the story fits within your existing narrative, or is being written by your favourite journalist, is not a reliable path to truth and you are not justified in those beliefs, whether or not they are eventually proved correct. As much as it would make life easier, things are not black and white and this is a fact which needs to be recognised. People who you perceive to be in your corner may not always be acting in good faith, journalists may be on someone’s payroll or just doing shoddy work, the state may be lying like they have done so many times before. Don’t be a parrot. ### Fake news If you are reading this article and thinking, “this person is pro-Russia, this is fake news”, then the point of this article has been lost on you and you need to go and ask Polly for another cracker. You can oppose two things at the same time, you can support some policies of a political party and not others, you can agree with a Momentum policy if you are a member of the Conservative Party and you can agree with a policy of the Tories if you are a member of the Labour party. These things are unlikely but not impossible if you have an open mind and focus on policy and facts. You can also be against the foreign policy of the USA or the UK without supporting the foreign policy of autocrats like Putin, this is a false dichotomy; refuting one claim is not usually tantamount to asserting that the opposite is true. ### How to not be a parrot I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news to all of the parrots out there, but it’s never too late to alter your thinking; a leopard may not be able to change its spots, but you’re not a leopard, you’re a parrot.

You spend an age planning the day and it flies by in a flash, but you get to make memories that stay with you for the rest of your life. One such wedding was taking place a few days ago, on the 22nd April 2018, but the couple will never have a chance to reminisce over their wedding album; by the end of the day at least 20 of the guests lay dead, [including the bride](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/yemen-airstrike-wedding-party-killed-injured-bani-qayis-saudi-coalition-latest-updates-a8317826.html). But this is not a tragedy imagined in the fantastically dark mind of George R. R. Martin, this is Yemen and it is the latest in a string of civilian deaths against the [backdrop of a genocide](https://www.investigaction.net/en/yemen-a-western-sponsored-genocide/) being perpetrated by the Saudi Arabia-led and US and UK backed [coalition](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLRgdFP-s30). According to Khaled al-Nadhri, health official in the northern province of Hajja where the bombing took place, the majority of the victims were women and children gathered in a tent set up for the wedding party. Mohammed al-Sawmali from nearby al-Jomhouri hospital confirmed, as widely reported, that at least 20 people were killed and more than 45 injured, including the groom. Around 30 children are included amongst the hurt, some suffering from shrapnel wounds and severed limbs. It is possible that more people could have been saved, however, Yemen health ministry spokesman Abdel-Hakim al-Kahlan said that first responders, knowing the history of repeated [double-tap strikes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_tap#Double_tap_strike) by the coalition, were at first too fearful to attempt to reach the scene as fighter jets still circled overhead. [Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZegpY4moW4) has surfaced purporting to show the immediate aftermath of the bombing. In the same weekend, reports also accuse the Saudi coalition of the bombing of a nearby house in Hajja, killing an entire family of five, as well as a further strike killing 20 more civilians, targetting a commuter bus travelling near Mozwa in western Yemen, close to the ravaged city of Ta’iz. ## 3 Years of Killing These recent events are but a drop in the ocean compared with the reality of the 3-year-old war, resulting in what the UN described recently as the [worst humanitarian crisis in the world](https://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/?toURL=https://www.forbes.com/sites/ewelinaochab/2018/04/05/yemen-became-the-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crisis/&refURL=https://theovertonwindow.co.uk/2018/05/02/the-real-life-red-wedding-and-the-fallacy-of-humanitarianism/&referrer=https://theovertonwindow.co.uk/2018/05/02/the-real-life-red-wedding-and-the-fallacy-of-humanitarianism/#4d124a755050). According to the [UN](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ewelinaochab/2018/04/05/yemen-became-the-worlds-worst-humanitarian-crisis/#4d124a755050), approximately 22 million Yemeni citizens are in *“dire need of humanitarian assistance and protection"*. That is equivalent to almost 1/3 of the population of the UK, or 3/4 of the population of Yemen. 11.3 million of those citizens are children. According to [UNICEF](https://www.unicef.org/media/media_102463.html), an average of 5 children per day have been killed since March 2015. More than 1.8 million children are *“acutely malnourished”* and *“400,000 of them are fighting for their lives“*. Coalition bombing of critical infrastructure, such as ports and bridges, and the blocking of aid routes in what the UK itself called a [breach of international law](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/18/saudi-arabia-told-by-uk-minister-to-stop-blocking-yemen-aid), has also led to [near-starvation](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-war-hunger/yemen-could-face-famine-in-2018-as-war-continues-aid-agencies-warn-idUSKBN1F51FG) and the largest outbreak of cholera in modern times in a country that was already one of the most impoverished in the world. ## Where is the Outrage? How can it be that the US and the UK, who publicly laud themselves as protectors of humanity, limit their reaction to simply wagging the occasional finger to appease the public and then continuing to sanction further weapons deals? The UK, US and France thought it necessary to bomb Syria in reaction to the recent [alleged chemical attack](http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-43697084), but the only metric whereby the attack in Syria appears to be *“worse”* than the reported bombing of the wedding in Yemen is one which focuses solely on the exoticism of the weapons being used in the killing. If we are truly interested in saving innocent lives then on what basis do we justify the distinguishing of our reaction based on the methods by which those lives are taken? The difference cannot be the use of chemical weapons, because Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya was overthrown on the basis of his perceived threat of the use of violence against civilians and no chemical weapons were used. Still, the press and the governments on both side of the Atlantic were chomping at the bit to remove Gaddafi from power. They succeeded and for the record, a UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee [investigation](https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201617/cmselect/cmfaff/119/119.pdf) later found (as set out in a [must-read article](https://www.salon.com/2016/09/16/u-k-parliament-report-details-how-natos-2011-war-in-libya-was-based-on-lies/) by Salon), that in carrying out the war on Libya: *“UK Strategy was founded on erroneous assumptions and an incomplete understanding of the evidence”* and that the British government, *“failed to identify that the threat to civilians was overstated and that the rebels included a significant Islamist element“.* In the case of Yemen there is complete silence where previously, stenographers of power like The Sun were [baying for the UK to drop bombs](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/6011962/britain-must-stop-syria-chemical-attacks/) on Syria without parliamentary approval or evidence of guilt on the part of Assad’s government. A search for the word “Yemen” on The Sun’s website as of 2nd May 2018 reveals the latest mention of Yemen as being [this article](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/5396345/what-remains-of-isiss-global-terror-network-map-reveals-fanatics-still-have-strongholds-all-over-the-planet-despite-being-crushed-in-syria-and-iraq/) dated 13 March 2018 stating that ISIS is active in Yemen. If the search results are representative of the site’s reporting, it appears they have not even bothered to report on the bombing of the wedding. Other mainstream outlets did report the strike, but the reaction is on a completely different scale to the reaction to similar events in Syria and indeed Libya before that. ## Two Kinds of ‘Dictators’ On the one hand, the US and the UK have bombed Syria in the wake of alleged attacks on civilians without so much as an investigation, whereas the punishment for Crown Prince [Mohammed Bin Salman](http://www.toledoblade.com/Will-Tomer/2018/04/27/The-Saudi-Arabia-crown-prince-Mohammed-bin-Salman-is-not-a-reformer-just-another-despot.html) is to welcome him with open arms on his *“[charm offensive](https://www.voanews.com/a/saudi-crown-prince-tour-charm-offensive/4347201.html)”* tour around the Western world. In a demonstration of the ties between the political and business elites, Bin Salman topped off his tour with audiences with Oprah Winfrey, “the Rock”, Bill and Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Michael Bloomberg and the Queen of England, amongst others. Not bad for a man reportedly responsible for the murder of countless civilians and the running of a state which [beheaded 48 people](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/26/saudi-arabia-criticised-over-executions-for-drug-offences) in just four months in 2018 and still carries the death penalty for “[witchcraft](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/02/saudi-arabia-beheadings-reach-highest-level-in-two-decades)“. One theory is that this dichotomy in foreign policy may have emerged as a result of the fact that our oil-rich allies, Saudi Arabia, buy billions of pounds worth of weapons from the UK and the US respectively every year and prop up the [PetroDollar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCbFTnxBEKs), whereas Assad is an ally of strategic rivals, Russia and [Iran](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/pa/article-5671857/US-stands-Israelis-Saudis-against-Iran-says-Pompeo.html). It also worth noting that John Kerry, ex-Secretary of State under Obama, is [on record](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY_1eavidtM) admitting that Saudi Arabia offered to pay the entire cost of the war if the US agreed to overthrow Assad’s regime *“the way we’ve done it previously in other places“*. The UK and the US must, by continuing to arm Saudi Arabia, take their share of the blame for this war. As Lynn Maalouf, Amnesty International’s Director of Research for the Middle East [put it](https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/03/yemen-three-years-on-us-and-uk-arms-supplies-to-saudi-arabia-led-coalition-are-devastating-civilian-lives/): *“There is extensive evidence that irresponsible arms flows to the Saudi Arabia-led coalition have resulted in enormous harm to Yemeni civilians. But this has not deterred the USA, the UK and other states, including France, Spain and Italy, from continuing transfers of billions of dollars’ worth of such arms“*. In fact, the [bombs used in the wedding strike](https://www.bellingcat.com/news/mena/2018/04/27/american-made-bomb-used-airstrike-yemen-wedding/) may have been the Raytheon manufactured and American-made GBY-12 Paveway II guided bomb. Human Rights Watch has previously reported evidence of American bombs being [used in civilian killings](https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/05/04/us-officials-risk-complicity-war-crimes-yemen) in Yemen. The linked report relates to the double-tap strike against a village well (yes, a village well), killing at least 31 civilians and injuring 42. Dated in May 2017, the report also states that it was *“the 23rd time that Human Rights Watch had identified remnants of US-supplied weapons at the site of an apparently unlawful coalition attack“*. Award-winning outlet, The Intercept, also reported that fragments of apparently US-made bombs were discovered after [yet another mass killing](https://theintercept.com/2016/10/10/photos-show-fragments-of-u-s-bombs-at-site-of-yemen-funeral-masssacre/) of civilians in October 2016 when coalition aircraft reportedly bombed a funeral four times killing more than 140 people and wounding 525 more. A local health official described the aftermath as *“a lake of blood“*. The UK’s arms sales to Saudi Arabia hit [£1.1bn](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/24/uk-sales-of-arms-and-military-equipment-to-saudi-arabia-2017) in 2017 alone and have continued since. Both the US and the UK also provide training and assistance to the Saudi war effort in Yemen, including, rather shockingly, according to Saudi foreign minister [Adel al-Jubeir](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/15/british-us-military-in-command-room-saudi-strikes-yemen), assistance in the *“command and control centre“*. Al-Jubeir also confirmed that that the UK and the US *“know what the target list is and they have a sense of what we are doing and what we are not doing“*. That strike list, as shown above, assumedly includes schools, hospitals, funerals, weddings, village wells and open-air markets, amongst other civilian infrastructure, resulting often in [double-tap strikes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqP6CSJHxQc). The US even [refuels coalition planes](https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/03/13/general-argues-continue-refueling-saudi-planes-yemen-fight.html) whilst they are bombing Yemen. ## Selective Humanitarianism as a Weapon The clear truth is that US and UK foreign policy has absolutely nothing to do with humanitarianism and the protection of civilians. The US and the UK are only interested in using humanitarianism selectively as a device through which to [manufacture consent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTBWfkE7BXU) for military action in the furtherance of their un-democratic foreign policy objectives of regime change and economic imperialism carried out through wars repeatedly based on [proven lies](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jul/06/spy-agencies-flawed-information-saddam-wmds-iraq-chilcot). It is time that we recognise the hypocrisy inherent in our foreign policy and vote in a Labour government in the UK that can break ties with America and the war machine and start to repair the damage done over recent decades.

Not bad for a man reportedly responsible for the murder of countless civilians and the running of a state which [beheaded 48 people](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/26/saudi-arabia-criticised-over-executions-for-drug-offences) in just four months in 2018 and still carries the death penalty for “[witchcraft](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/02/saudi-arabia-beheadings-reach-highest-level-in-two-decades)“.\n\nOne theory is that this dichotomy in foreign policy may have emerged as a result of the fact that our oil-rich allies, Saudi Arabia, buy billions of pounds worth of weapons from the UK and the US respectively every year and prop up the [PetroDollar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCbFTnxBEKs), whereas Assad is an ally of strategic rivals, Russia and [Iran](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/pa/article-5671857/US-stands-Israelis-Saudis-against-Iran-says-Pompeo.html).\n\nIt also worth noting that John Kerry, ex-Secretary of State under Obama, is [on record](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY_1eavidtM) admitting that Saudi Arabia offered to pay the entire cost of the war if the US agreed to overthrow Assad’s regime *“the way we’ve done it previously in other places“*.\n\nThe UK and the US must, by continuing to arm Saudi Arabia, take their share of the blame for this war. As Lynn Maalouf, Amnesty International’s Director of Research for the Middle East [put it](https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/03/yemen-three-years-on-us-and-uk-arms-supplies-to-saudi-arabia-led-coalition-are-devastating-civilian-lives/):\n\n*“There is extensive evidence that irresponsible arms flows to the Saudi Arabia-led coalition have resulted in enormous harm to Yemeni civilians. But this has not deterred the USA, the UK and other states, including France, Spain and Italy, from continuing transfers of billions of dollars’ worth of such arms“*.\n\nIn fact, the [bombs used in the wedding strike](https://www.bellingcat.com/news/mena/2018/04/27/american-made-bomb-used-airstrike-yemen-wedding/) may have been the Raytheon manufactured and American-made GBY-12 Paveway II guided bomb.\n\nHuman Rights Watch has previously reported evidence of American bombs being [used in civilian killings](https://www.hrw.org/news/2017/05/04/us-officials-risk-complicity-war-crimes-yemen) in Yemen. The linked report relates to the double-tap strike against a village well (yes, a village well), killing at least 31 civilians and injuring 42. Dated in May 2017, the report also states that it was *“the 23rd time that Human Rights Watch had identified remnants of US-supplied weapons at the site of an apparently unlawful coalition attack“*.\n\nAward-winning outlet, The Intercept, also reported that fragments of apparently US-made bombs were discovered after [yet another mass killing](https://theintercept.com/2016/10/10/photos-show-fragments-of-u-s-bombs-at-site-of-yemen-funeral-masssacre/) of civilians in October 2016 when coalition aircraft reportedly bombed a funeral four times killing more than 140 people and wounding 525 more. A local health official described the aftermath as *“a lake of blood“*.\n\nThe UK’s arms sales to Saudi Arabia hit [£1.1bn](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/24/uk-sales-of-arms-and-military-equipment-to-saudi-arabia-2017) in 2017 alone and have continued since. Al-Jubeir also confirmed that that the UK and the US *“know what the target list is and they have a sense of what we are doing and what we are not doing“*.\n\nThat strike list, as shown above, assumedly includes schools, hospitals, funerals, weddings, village wells and open-air markets, amongst other civilian infrastructure, resulting often in [double-tap strikes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqP6CSJHxQc). The US even [refuels coalition planes](https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/03/13/general-argues-continue-refueling-saudi-planes-yemen-fight.html) whilst they are bombing Yemen.\n\n## Selective Humanitarianism as a Weapon\n\nThe clear truth is that US and UK foreign policy has absolutely nothing to do with humanitarianism and the protection of civilians.\n\nThe US and the UK are only interested in using humanitarianism selectively as a device through which to [manufacture consent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTBWfkE7BXU) for military action in the furtherance of their un-democratic foreign policy objectives of regime change and economic imperialism carried out through wars repeatedly based on [proven lies](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/jul/06/spy-agencies-flawed-information-saddam-wmds-iraq-chilcot).\n\nIt is time that we recognise the hypocrisy inherent in our foreign policy and vote in a Labour government in the UK that can break ties with America and the war machine and start to repair the damage done over recent decades.",

bodyFirst reported by [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/11/goldman-asks-is-curing-patients-a-sustainable-business-model.html), a report issued earlier this month entitled “The Genome Revolution” by Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s largest investment banks, recently posed the question to investors, “Is curing patients a sustainable business model?”. It is remarkable that this question should even be asked out in the open like this, but it merely demonstrates what we already know, that profit _always_ comes first, no matter the human consequences. The irony, in this case, is that an investment bank is in the news for telling the truth. ### Bankers’ Lament at the Success of Cures<h1> Authored by Salveen Richter, Goldman Sachs analyst, the report recognised the proposition of providing “one-shot cures” as one of the “most attractive” elements of gene therapy, but goes on to state that, “_while this proposition carries tremendous value for patients and society, it could represent a challenge for genome medicine developers looking for a sustained cash flow_”. As an example of the harm that curing people can do to your bottom line, the report referenced [Gilead Sciences’](http://www.gilead.com/) treatments for [hepatitis C](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hepatitis-c/), which has achieved cure rates of more than 90%. As hepatitis C is a contagious disease, the more people you cure now the fewer people can you sell your treatments to in the future, or as Goldman Sachs put it: “the success of [Gilead Science’s] hepatitis C franchise has gradually exhausted the available pool of treatable patients…In the case of infectious diseases such as hepatitis C, curing existing patients also decreases the number of carriers able to transmit the virus to new patients, thus the incident pool also declines”. To demonstrate the effects of this on the balance sheet, as a result of the treatment’s success, Gilead Sciences’ US sales declined from $12.5 billion in 2015 to a projected $4 billion in 2018. This is clear evidence that there is an inverse profit motive in the case of curing patients with infectious diseases. Goldman’s report ends by encouraging biotech companies to focus on illnesses that are already high-incidence or have a growing number of sufferers alongside expanding their portfolio of treatments in order to “offset the declining revenue trajectory of prior assets”. Whether intentional or otherwise, the message to any investors reading the report is that you will not make as much money if you invest in cures, or similarly in treatments for infectious or rare diseases where the pool of potential sufferers is unstable. The outcome is that a sensible investment strategy is directly contrary to the outcomes desired by patients and by wider society, who would surely see the incentive as being to help those who need it. ### Healthcare and Profit Don’t Mix<h1> This isn’t the first time that the profit motive in medicine has made headlines, particularly in America. Most people will remember the furore regarding Martin Shkreli’s [jacking up](https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/21/business/a-huge-overnight-increase-in-a-drugs-price-raises-protests.html) of the price of lifesaving drug [Daraprim](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrimethamine) (used to treat AIDS, malaria, cancer patients and those who are at an increased risk of [toxoplasmosis](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/toxoplasmosis/)) by 5,000% after his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, took control of it. The cost spiked from $13.50 per pill to $750 per pill overnight and despite the public outcry and the eventual jailing of Martin Shkreli for an [unconnected offence](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/14/martin-shkreli-asks-to-serve-fraud-sentence-in-minimum-security-camp.html), Vyera Pharmaceuticals (the new name for Turing Pharmaceuticals) still sells the drug for the inflated price in the US – demonstrating that once the heat from the media died down, the remaining members of the company decided that yes, profits are more important than patients. It is worth mentioning that prior to his incarceration into the primarily [for-profit prison system](http://time.com/5013760/american-private-prisons-donald-trump/) in America, Shkreli acknowledged during an [interview with Bloomberg](http://www.newsweek.com/martin-shkreli-daraprim-drug-prices-374922) that the cost of production of Daraprim is close to $1 per pill. In a similar vein, EpiPens, a life-saving medication which most readers will be familiar with as the go-to for anaphylaxis, hit the [headlines](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/aug/24/epipen-ceo-hiked-prices-heather-bresch-mylan#img-1) in 2016 when the CEO of the pharmaceutical company, Mylan, purchased the rights and increased the price from $100 to $600 for a pack of two pens between 2009 and 2016. Mylan’s CEO, Heather Bresch (who is the daughter of the US Democratic senator for West Virginia, Joe Manchin) earned a reported [$19 million dollars](http://www.chicagotribune.com/g00/business/ct-epipen-ceo-bresch-salary-20160824-story.html?i10c.encReferrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrLw%3D%3D&i10c.ua=1&i10c.dv=14) in 2015. From a US perspective, each of these stories is symptomatic of a broken system which exists not to treat people but to profiteer off of their need for treatment. Studies suggest that between 18,000 and 50,000 people [die every year](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/24/us-healthcare-republican-bill-no-coverage-death#img-1) in America simply because they cannot afford medical insurance and because successive governments refuse to legislate to provide them with an NHS-style system, despite the [majority of the American public](http://uk.businessinsider.com/poll-medicare-for-all-public-option-bernie-sanders-plan-support-2018-3?r=US&IR=T) being in favour of it. When you view this through the prism of the pharmaceutical industry’s economic stranglehold on each administration through [massive political campaign contributions](https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/indusclient.php?id=h04), it is easy to understand why: again, the incentives are all wrong. Politicians do the bidding of lobbyists in return for the cash required to be re-elected or in return for the promise of [highly-paid jobs](https://www.vox.com/2016/1/15/10775788/revolving-door-lobbying) or [speeches once they retire](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/barack-obama-speeches-fee-wall-street-latest-a7954156.html) from public office, the lobbyists do the bidding of the pharmaceutical industry who pay their salaries and the general public are left metaphorically banging their heads against a brick wall. ### Unavoidable Truth<h1> The problem with the contents of the report is that the observations and conclusions immediately ring true. It is a truism that is it more profitable for a company to sell repeated prescriptions for years to a cancer sufferer than it would be to sell them a one-off cure. Whilst the report demonstrates that the current system does provide an incentive for doing so, there is no current evidence that anyone is deliberately trying to avoid curing cancer, for example, but it does make clear that if your starting point is that you must make as much money as possible (the inherent starting position of any company), then selling a cure instead of repeated treatments is a fool’s errand, akin to a weekly child’s magazine giving you all of the pieces to build that impressive model train in the first edition – you aren’t going to buy any more magazines and the publisher knows it. But, this isn’t Sunday afternoon model train building, this is life and death and more abstractly, the advancement of medical science. Surely, in light of all of these obvious examples of the incentive problems in mixing medicine and money, we have to ask ourselves the question, if it is the case that the most logical decision for a business to take within the sphere of the current system is to deny “customers” a one-off cure in favour of prolonged treatment simply because it will increase the profits of a few rich investors, then isn’t there something fundamentally wrong with the way things are organised? If we were to start again we would surely build an economy in which the victor in the battle between preventing suffering and increasing profits is always the former, but that is demonstrably not where we are today. Our global system of crony capitalism and oligarchy cloaked in the myth of representative democracy continues to produce profits for the few and misery for the many, this is simply one example of how this comes to pass. Credit goes to Redacted Tonight for bringing this story to our attention, check out their great analysis on YouTube [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFn0UqgRrx8).

"body": "First reported by [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/11/goldman-asks-is-curing-patients-a-sustainable-business-model.html), a report issued earlier this month entitled “The Genome Revolution” by Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s largest investment banks, recently posed the question to investors, “Is curing patients a sustainable business model?”.\n\nIt is remarkable that this question should even be asked out in the open like this, but it merely demonstrates what we already know, that profit _always_ comes first, no matter the human consequences. The irony, in this case, is that an investment bank is in the news for telling the truth.\n\n### Bankers’ Lament at the Success of Cures<h1>\n\nAuthored by Salveen Richter, Goldman Sachs analyst, the report recognised the proposition of providing “one-shot cures” as one of the “most attractive” elements of gene therapy, but goes on to state that, “_while this proposition carries tremendous value for patients and society, it could represent a challenge for genome medicine developers looking for a sustained cash flow_”.\n\nAs an example of the harm that curing people can do to your bottom line, the report referenced [Gilead Sciences’](http://www.gilead.com/) treatments for [hepatitis C](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hepatitis-c/), which has achieved cure rates of more than 90%. As hepatitis C is a contagious disease, the more people you cure now the fewer people can you sell your treatments to in the future, or as Goldman Sachs put it:\n\n“the success of [Gilead Science’s] hepatitis C franchise has gradually exhausted the available pool of treatable patients…In the case of infectious diseases such as hepatitis C, curing existing patients also decreases the number of carriers able to transmit the virus to new patients, thus the incident pool also declines”.\n\nTo demonstrate the effects of this on the balance sheet, as a result of the treatment’s success, Gilead Sciences’ US sales declined from $12.5 billion in 2015 to a projected $4 billion in 2018. This is clear evidence that there is an inverse profit motive in the case of curing patients with infectious diseases.\n\nGoldman’s report ends by encouraging biotech companies to focus on illnesses that are already high-incidence or have a growing number of sufferers alongside expanding their portfolio of treatments in order to “offset the declining revenue trajectory of prior assets”. Whether intentional or otherwise, the message to any investors reading the report is that you will not make as much money if you invest in cures, or similarly in treatments for infectious or rare diseases where the pool of potential sufferers is unstable. The outcome is that a sensible investment strategy is directly contrary to the outcomes desired by patients and by wider society, who would surely see the incentive as being to help those who need it.\n\n### Healthcare and Profit Don’t Mix<h1>\n\nThis isn’t the first time that the profit motive in medicine has made headlines, particularly in America.\n\nMost people will remember the furore regarding Martin Shkreli’s [jacking up](https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/21/business/a-huge-overnight-increase-in-a-drugs-price-raises-protests.html) of the price of lifesaving drug [Daraprim](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrimethamine) (used to treat AIDS, malaria, cancer patients and those who are at an increased risk of [toxoplasmosis](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/toxoplasmosis/)) by 5,000% after his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, took control of it.\n\nThe cost spiked from $13.50 per pill to $750 per pill overnight and despite the public outcry and the eventual jailing of Martin Shkreli for an [unconnected offence](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/14/martin-shkreli-asks-to-serve-fraud-sentence-in-minimum-security-camp.html), Vyera Pharmaceuticals (the new name for Turing Pharmaceuticals) still sells the drug for the inflated price in the US – demonstrating that once the heat from the media died down, the remaining members of the company decided that yes, profits are more important than patients.\n\nIt is worth mentioning that prior to his incarceration into the primarily [for-profit prison system](http://time.com/5013760/american-private-prisons-donald-trump/) in America, Shkreli acknowledged during an [interview with Bloomberg](http://www.newsweek.com/martin-shkreli-daraprim-drug-prices-374922) that the cost of production of Daraprim is close to $1 per pill.\n\nIn a similar vein, EpiPens, a life-saving medication which most readers will be familiar with as the go-to for anaphylaxis, hit the [headlines](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/aug/24/epipen-ceo-hiked-prices-heather-bresch-mylan#img-1) in 2016 when the CEO of the pharmaceutical company, Mylan, purchased the rights and increased the price from $100 to $600 for a pack of two pens between 2009 and 2016. Mylan’s CEO, Heather Bresch (who is the daughter of the US Democratic senator for West Virginia, Joe Manchin) earned a reported [$19 million dollars](http://www.chicagotribune.com/g00/business/ct-epipen-ceo-bresch-salary-20160824-story.html?i10c.encReferrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrLw%3D%3D&i10c.ua=1&i10c.dv=14) in 2015.\n\nFrom a US perspective, each of these stories is symptomatic of a broken system which exists not to treat people but to profiteer off of their need for treatment. Studies suggest that between 18,000 and 50,000 people [die every year](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/24/us-healthcare-republican-bill-no-coverage-death#img-1) in America simply because they cannot afford medical insurance and because successive governments refuse to legislate to provide them with an NHS-style system, despite the [majority of the American public](http://uk.businessinsider.com/poll-medicare-for-all-public-option-bernie-sanders-plan-support-2018-3?r=US&IR=T) being in favour of it.\n\nWhen you view this through the prism of the pharmaceutical industry’s economic stranglehold on each administration through [massive political campaign contributions](https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/indusclient.php?id=h04), it is easy to understand why: again, the incentives are all wrong. Politicians do the bidding of lobbyists in return for the cash required to be re-elected or in return for the promise of [highly-paid jobs](https://www.vox.com/2016/1/15/10775788/revolving-door-lobbying) or [speeches once they retire](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/barack-obama-speeches-fee-wall-street-latest-a7954156.html) from public office, the lobbyists do the bidding of the pharmaceutical industry who pay their salaries and the general public are left metaphorically banging their heads against a brick wall.\n\n### Unavoidable Truth<h1>\n\nThe problem with the contents of the report is that the observations and conclusions immediately ring true. It is a truism that is it more profitable for a company to sell repeated prescriptions for years to a cancer sufferer than it would be to sell them a one-off cure.\n\nWhilst the report demonstrates that the current system does provide an incentive for doing so, there is no current evidence that anyone is deliberately trying to avoid curing cancer, for example, but it does make clear that if your starting point is that you must make as much money as possible (the inherent starting position of any company), then selling a cure instead of repeated treatments is a fool’s errand, akin to a weekly child’s magazine giving you all of the pieces to build that impressive model train in the first edition – you aren’t going to buy any more magazines and the publisher knows it.\n\nBut, this isn’t Sunday afternoon model train building, this is life and death and more abstractly, the advancement of medical science.\n\nSurely, in light of all of these obvious examples of the incentive problems in mixing medicine and money, we have to ask ourselves the question, if it is the case that the most logical decision for a business to take within the sphere of the current system is to deny “customers” a one-off cure in favour of prolonged treatment simply because it will increase the profits of a few rich investors, then isn’t there something fundamentally wrong with the way things are organised?\n\nIf we were to start again we would surely build an economy in which the victor in the battle between preventing suffering and increasing profits is always the former, but that is demonstrably not where we are today.\n\nOur global system of crony capitalism and oligarchy cloaked in the myth of representative democracy continues to produce profits for the few and misery for the many, this is simply one example of how this comes to pass.\n\nCredit goes to Redacted Tonight for bringing this story to our attention, check out their great analysis on YouTube [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFn0UqgRrx8).",
