| title | 20 Years a Slave: UK Taxes |
| body |

Figures from the TaxPayers' Alliance reveal the extent of the burden of taxation in the UK, with the average household having to work for over 20 years just to cover the tax bill.

It is a topic rarely addressed in the quasi-socialist political environment of the UK but now and then the chance to demonstrate to voters how the cost of living is ratcheted up by a pervasive and complex tax code arises. And this is what the TaxPayers' Alliance has attempted to do with data from the ONS, detailing how the tax burden on different households has grown in the last 20 years.

The Alliance, which frequently calls for the government to tighten its belt in order to make significant reductions in taxation, found that at the 2014-2015 rate of tax the average household in the UK would pay £826,030 over a working lifetime of 44 years (from 21 to 65) and 15 years of retirement. The TPA calculated that to pay off this bill alone the average household would have to work for over 20 years but, the poorer you are, the worse the picture gets for you.

An average household in the bottom 20% of income with a gross income of only £13,841 per year faces a lifetime tax bill of £312,973 and has to work for 23 years, an above-average length of time, to cover its tax bill. The picture looks slightly rosier for households in the top 20% but not much as the average household in that quintile faces a lifetime tax bill of £1,686,970 and still needs to work for 19 years in order to cover its tax bill, only 4 years below the poorest households and 1 year below the UK average.

These figures amply demonstrate how taxation can indeed undermine the incentive to work, especially among less skilled labourers and the insidious, ever-expanding nature of taxation is clear to see. In the 1994-95 financial year, the lifetime tax an average household could expect to pay was £427,980 but in 2014-15, that figure had grown to £826,030, an increase of almost 100%. In the case of the bottom 20% of households, the expected life tax bill has increased in the aforementioned period from £158,881 to £319,732, an increase of over 100%.

Interestingly, despite it being a popular line to take among Tory-bashing leftists, the suggestion that the well-off are being spoiled in their taxation by the Conservative government, the biggest tax increase year-on-year between 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 was faced by the top 20% of UK households with them facing a 4.3% increase in their expected lifetime tax bill as opposed to a 2.7% increase for the average household and a 2.2% increase for the bottom 20%.

The figures give a troubling glimpse into the impact of taxation on the ordinary working man and woman in the UK but don't expect them to be given too much coverage by the press or parties after the summer recess.

You can find the link the link to the TPA's findings here: https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/taxpayersalliance/pages/6761/attachments/original/1472132879/Lifetime_tax.pdf?1472132879

|

| body | It's a shame you share Owen Smith's vision of a tinpot democracy. If you look at the stats on this, polling data indicates that only 5% of those who voted to leave regret doing so and the same is true of those who voted to remain as well. Youth voters, me being one, have no excuse for such a poor turn out on their part. There is even proof that David Cameron sought to haul in as much of the youth vote as possible in the referendum by advertising the need to register to vote on Facebook to exclusively young voters. As for Johnson and Farage, they made quite the opposite of fools of themselves, didn't they? After all, it was they who won the vote. Your praise of the EU as an organisation 'for peace' is very telling indeed. Tell me, how has it helped to foster peace in the Ukraine when its officials, such as Catherine Ashton, actively encouraged revolution alongside the Americans? Did it help to prevent the break-up of Yugoslavia? The EU did not form into the political union you praise it as being until the early 1990s. What kept European countries from warring with one another after 1945 and the USSR at bay was NATO. Diplomacy is not exclusive to the existence of a political union which undermines the sovereignty of its members. |

| title | Clinton Debunked: What Farage Really Said |
| body |

Following his appearance at a Donald Trump rally in Jackson, Mississippi, on Wednesday night, former UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage found himself under direct attack by the Clinton campaign in an attempt to undermine Trump.

Hillary Clinton took to the stage in Nevada on Thursday with the intention of tackling two English thorns in her side, one of course being Nigel Farage, but the other being Breitbart journalist and provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos. Clinton's citing of some of Yiannopoulos' headlines, such as 'Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy' and 'Would you rather your Child had Feminism or Cancer?', was at least factual but the attack she launched at Farage was riddled with out-of-context caveats which sought to portray the prominent British political figure in the worst way possible.

One accusation leveled at Farage by Clinton was that he had 'called for a bar on the children of legal immigrants in the UK from attending public schools and using health services'. To put the comments into context, Farage has long held the view that immigrants should not be able to access public services such as healthcare and education unless they pay taxes. Hardly a fiercely anti-immigrant stance.

And in a blatant appeal to her feminist base, or the scraps that the Bernie Sanders movement left behind, she once again plucked a quote from Faragem calling 'women worth less than men' regarding women in the workplace and referring to the impact of maternity leave on their careers. You can find the link to his defence of his comment at the end of this post.

Clinton also attempted to portray Farage as an advocate of racial discrimination by referring to comments he made in an interview a couple of years ago which called for the scrapping of racial discrimination legislation, most of which is EU law and consequently won't be applicable in the UK in a couple of years' time anyway, as he believes racial discrimination isn't a big enough issue in the UK to warrant legislation anymore. But apparently having a positive perception of your country's tolerance to other races and cultures is no longer something to be celebrated anymore. In fact, it's enough to prompt a candidate for the US presidency to denounce you as a racist.

Farage on women in the workplace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBSl896hD10

|

We've got a post-retirement age, tie-less, bearded socialist who hit his prime during the 1980s (retro, right?) up against an obscure Labour MP from Wales who claims to be 'just as radical' as his opponent despite the fact that it was less than 10 years ago that he proclaimed himself an adherent to Blairism, an ideology more likely to appeal to Conservatives than socialists, and who only a few weeks ago found his campaign caught up in a misogyny row following a promise to 'smash' Britain's new Prime Minister 'back on her heels'.

And whilst I still staunchly maintain that the leadership challenger, Owen Smith (pictured below), announces policies according to a wheel of fortune on his desk that he gives a spin every morning, on Tuesday the leadership battle took yet another turn for the comical.

In what I'm sure struck the perpetrator as pure genius at the time and everyone else as refined idiocy about two hours later, as the incumbent Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, traveled north to Newcastle on the train from London, his team took the opportunity to video their leader squatting on the floor of a train carriage due to an apparent lack of unused unreserved seats. In the video, Corbyn took the opportunity to advocate for the renationalisation of the railways by saying: 'The reality is there's not enough trains, we need more of them.' But it wasn't too long after the publication of this endearing video that head of the Virgin brand, Richard Branson, took to Twitter with a video of his own which would thoroughly embarrass Corbyn and his team. In the CCTV footage, Corbyn is shown to be returning to a train seat for the two hour remainder of the journey following the filming of the video. Virgin also revealed that seats were available prior to the filming of the video.

Political differences aside, I think it was terribly kind of Jeremy to have taken the media bullet instead of Owen Smith for a change. | body | Sorry for the slow response, I've been busy for a couple of days. On the issue of Northern Ireland, following the Brexit vote there were negligible mutterings about Irish reunification since Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU. However, such mutterings came from figures such as Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, both high ranking figures in Sinn Fein which was the political branch of the provisional IRA. On the issue of Scotland, the nationalists overestimate the strength of their position in Scotland. The Scottish National Party (SNP) actually lost seats in the Scottish elections back in May and no longer have a majority in the Scottish Parliament so lead a minority government. They are disliked as much as Westminster in the outer regions of Scotland and as much as they may want a second referendum, the governing Conservative Party of the UK will be in no way inclined to give them one considering Scottish independence was rejected less than two years ago by the Scottish people. Practicalities of a second Scottish referendum aside and on my personal view of the SNP, the notion that the Scots should be granted independence on the basis that they voted to remain in the EU is an easily refuted one. Firstly, both Brighton and London overwhelmingly voted to remain in the EU but nobody is proposing they become independent city states. Secondly, the Scots voted to remain part of the union that is the United Kingdom and that means that when we go to the polls we do not vote as separate countries but as one people, especially in referendums where we do not vote along constituency lines. If Scottish votes had ended up keeping the UK in the EU, you would not find eurosceptic Conservatives arguing for the dismissal of Scottish votes or the expulsion of the country from the UK. |

| title | Where's this post-Brexit crisis, then? |
| body |

Prior to their referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union (EU) on June 23rd of this year, the British people faced lectures from a myriad of public figures and organisations. The then-Prime Minister, David Cameron, warned that voting to leave the EU would be akin to 'putting a bomb under the economy', the IMF warned that Britain would be plunged into recession and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, warned the British people that they would be treated as 'deserters' by the remaining EU members.

It has now been exactly 57 days since the British electorate took the momentous decision to leave the economic and political union of which their country had been a member of since 1972 and that is plenty of time for investors and consumers to consider the short term implications of 'Brexit' and act accordingly; so let's take a look at the British economy as it stands today.

In one of the most divisive moves by the British government to try and secure a vote to Remain, David Cameron decided that wheeling out President Barack Obama to the cameras would be one of the most potent moves, although it ended up antagonising Remainers and Brexiteers alike, and in his speech to the British press, Obama warned that should the UK leave the EU, the country would find itself at the 'back of the queue' for trade deals in the event of Brexit. Yet the US leader has found himself in the minority in this statement with high ranking government officials and political figures from over two dozen countries, including the likes of Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and strongly europhilic Germany, hinting strongly at their desire for comprehensive trade deals with the UK.

As for Britain's financial markets, despite the pound sterling remaining below pre-Brexit levels, the FTSE 250 is currently 3.12% higher than it was prior to the drop it suffered following the referendum whilst the FTSE 100 is currently at a 14-month high.

And in reassuring economic data, retail sales in July, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), were up 1.4% on June after a slump in the month of the referendum despite economists predicting a rise of merely 0.2%. The number of people claiming unemployment benefit was also down by 8,600 despite an expected rise of 9,500. And due to the depreciation seen by the pound, spending on luxury items by tourists visiting Britain has increased significantly whilst a poll by The Times newspaper indicated that less than a third of Britons thought Brexit would leave them and their families worse off financially.

The rumors circulated by much of the press regarding the impact of Brexit on the economy were quite blatantly hyperbolic and as it stands it is far too early to gauge the long term impact of Brexit accurately. After all, the UK looks like it won't actually leave for at least another two years since the British government is yet to invoke Article 50. But what we can take from the latest economic data is that British consumers are taking Brexit with a pinch of salt and that, at least for the time being, it is business as usual for your everyday consumer.

|

| body | I'm sick of people who say the two parties are the same. You can support a third party without saying the two parties are the same. Trump is uniquely unqualified to be president. Clinton might be business as usual, IE, Obama's third term, and that is not a disaster. We ar the worlds only superpower and we achieved that status under our current two party system. The problem is that one of our two parties has gone insane, so right now the system is out of balance. |

| title | The Impossible Position of Jeremy Corbyn |
| body |

Take a look at the odds currently being offered on the Labour leadership election and no one would blame you for seeing the incumbent's, Jeremy Corbyn, reelection by the 500,000-strong membership as anything but a foregone conclusion. Indeed this is how those on the political scene are treating the contest. Ladbrokes are offering a generous 1/8 on Corbyn whilst William Hill is taking no chances with 1/11 reflecting the absolute confidence with which many expect Corbyn to claim victory.

His rival, Welsh MP Owen Smith, has so far refused to rule out an official split in the Labour Party reminiscent of the late 1970s when staunch socialist Michael Foot was elected as leader of the party and the more moderate factions of the party broke away to form the Social Democrats. The Independent reported at the end of July that a group of rebel MPs were planning to mount a legal challenge to the Labour Party which, if successful, would see the assets of the Labour Party transferred over to the 'new party' in question. But of all the problems that would arise from a formal or informal split in the party, the legal quibbles will prove to be only half the problem.

The EU referendum and the consequent vote for Brexit shone a spotlight on the deep regional divisions that have been widening in the Labour Party not only since Tony Blair's unveiling of the electorally palatable 'New Labour' in the early 1990s but since the development of a sizable, socialist, middle class segment of the electorate in Middle England and London itself that is not only dissimilar in its values to those of the 'Old Labour' vote but outright alien to them.

Take immigration. Take globalisation. They are two issues high on the agenda but on which the middle class and working class Labour voters differ fundamentally on, with the middle class voters embracing the concept of freedom of movement, multiculturalism and a global economy whilst working class voters in areas that have fallen victim to deindustrialisation see themselves as having lost traditional jobs to the developing world and being the victims of mass immigration and its alleged impact, such as wage depression, housing shortages and long waiting times at the doctor's.

Yet the one figure in the Labour Party these two factions have in common is Jeremy Corbyn; albeit for different reasons. Corbyn's progressive stance on social issues sells him well to 'Middle Labour', if you like, yet his skepticism of globalisation and his quiet but evident eurosceptic inclinations mean he appeals to the working class Labour vote. Regardless of whether the Labour Party splits following his likely reelection next month, the veteran activist and MP will be left with an impossible task of juggling the conflicting views of Labour supporters and maintaining his support amongst the predominantly young and progressive grassroots of the party reflected by the likes of Momentum whilst simultaneously attempting to reach out to the disenfranchised Labour voters of the Red Heartlands in order to prevent a UK Independence Party (UKIP) insurgency there in future local elections and, crucially, in 2020.

Corbyn's juggling act has already begun, with him alluding to his support for some level of control on migration, presumably in an attempt to appeal to the Old Labour vote, a fortnight ago in the first televised debate with Owen Smith but simultaneously calling for Britain's nuclear deterrent to be scrapped, a policy present in Labour's 1983 general election manifesto which appeals to the progressives of the party but strikes the more traditionally minded voters of the Labour working class as absurd. At the time of it's publication a Labour MP referred to it as 'the longest suicide note in history', and the subsequent wiping out of Labour proved him to be correct.

It is quite clear that whether a split occurs or not next month, Corbyn's election won't solve the disconnect Labour suffers with its voters and may ultimately prove to bring the party's factions into direct conflict not seen for over three decades. Instead of settling the matter of the direction of the party for the foreseeable future, this leadership election may well be only the beginning of months, if not years, of internal grappling in the Labour Party.

|

Indeed this is how those on the political scene are treating the contest. Ladbrokes are offering a generous 1/8 on Corbyn whilst William Hill is taking no chances with 1/11 reflecting the absolute confidence with which many expect Corbyn to claim victory.
\n
\n
The EU referendum and the consequent vote for Brexit shone a spotlight on the deep regional divisions that have been widening in the Labour Party not only since Tony Blair's unveiling of the electorally palatable 'New Labour' in the early 1990s but since the development of a sizable, socialist, middle class segment of the electorate in Middle England and London itself that is not only dissimilar in its values to those of the 'Old Labour' vote but outright alien to them.
\n
Take immigration. Instead of holding your nose and voting for someone you quite clearly disagree with. At least if you vote third party in November, in a few years time when we bemoan the 2016 presidential election and the two utterly deplorable candidates it turned out you can say you had the conviction to vote with your conscience rather than pandering to the meaningless and barely distinguishable two parties. |

| title | The Venezuela Contradiction |
| body | In an attempt to rebrand an ideology responsible for the starvation of millions of people in Eastern Europe in the 20th century, the Left in both the US and UK have been keen to place a great deal of emphasis on the term 'democratic socialism'. One prominent campaign in which the term proved itself to be popular with activists as a refutation was the now-defunct Bernie Sanders campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. However, an even more interesting tenet of this new, 'public-friendly' rebranding campaign is its attempt to appeal to those who find themselves inclined to neither the Right nor the Left. Often you will find this done through such means as insisting that a system of 'democratic socialism' does not entail an economy completely controlled by the State. In fact, some adherents to socialist ideology even go as far as trying to persuade the indifferent and skeptical of the virtues of socialism by pointing to such services as the army, police force and fire service as products of 'democratic socialism'. Such arguments are easily refutable. The very notion that taxation is indicative of a socialist society is nonsensical. Taxes have quite literally existed for thousands of years but the very idea of socialism was not articulated, never mind put into practice until the late 18th century. Similarly, for how long have armies been funded by State appropriations in the form of tax revenue? Why, for as long as armies have clashed. However socialists may attempt to dress up their ideology, the case of Venezuela, where the shelves remiain empty and the capital, Caracas, continues to be rocked by civil unrest, has done a fine job of tearing away the friendly, moral and philanthropic facade of this 'new socialism' and exposed it for the lie it is. In fact, it was only the other week that President Nicolas Maduro's government passed a forced labour law which allows the state to force Venezuelans to work in the fields of the country in order to combat the food shortage in the country. Yet if you scan across forums, social media posts and left wing media outlets such as Salon then one will be astonished to find socialists in their droves denying the failure of socialism in Venezuela and instead putting down the societal collapse seen there to the problems arising from a socialist system trying to operate on a capitalistic system. The end goal of socialists remains the same as it was last century. And judging by the empty stomachs and chained labour of Venezuela, so is the end result. |
