bodyLike many of you, I have observed and participated in many discussions where participants debated and pontificated their views on the true meaning of sustainability. The meaning of this word can vary considerably depending on the values of individuals and organizations. Over 70 definitions have now been used in the literature but the one most commonly used is probably the UN version “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” For most organizations, sustainability strategy tends to focus on balancing and improving performance regarding three dimensions. • Social Responsibility (People) • Environmental Stewardship (Planet) • Economic Growth (Profit) Thinking of sustainability in terms of nouns such as these can provide the rationale behind “why” we strive to operate more sustainably. We want to be effective stewards of these assets, and focusing on their protection and improvement can help organizations identify their biggest risks and opportunities. However, these nouns provide little insight regarding “how-to” go about actually improving performance. Action is required to affect change and this can only be accomplished through work. To connect sustainability to the various roles and responsibilities of organizations, we need to use verbs and actions that describe “how-to” work more sustainably. To understand how to work more sustainably, we have to first understand which practices are not sustainable, their problematic aspects, and the root causes of these problems. The Root Causes of Sustainability Constraints I argue that the best way to determine which actions can most effectively improve sustainability is to identify the root causes of unsustainable behaviour, then identify the best actions for defeating the root causes. Unsustainable practices tend to fall into one or more of four general categories as described below. 1) Wasteful Practices • Characteristics: Practices that result in inefficiency, hazards, accidents, attrition, defects, byproducts and excessive resource consumption • Impacts: Injuries, diseases, damages, emissions, and wastes; and consequential wasted talent, depletion of resources, degradation of resources, pollution and escalating costs 2) Deficient Processes and Products • Characteristics: Processes and products with defects that negatively affect quality, safety, productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of people, communities, businesses, resources and the environment • Impacts: Wastefulness that leads to reduced quality, productivity and availability of community, environmental and businesses assets; and consequential reduced quality of life for people 3) Dysfunctional Interactions • Characteristics: System aspects are not configured and managed in ways that maximize the benefits of exchanges between suppliers, designers, producers, customers, communities and the environment. • Impacts: Deficiency and Wastefulness regarding methods, people, machines, materials, energy, surroundings and management 4) Negligent Decisions • Characteristics: Choices that are unethical, irresponsible, and/or not compliant with regulations and policies; causing harm to people, organizations, communities and the environment • Impacts: Compliance failure; lawsuits, workforce attrition, declines in reputation and license to operate; Damage to community, environmental and personal resources; Dysfunction, Deficiency and Wastefulness Management choices that lead to these actions and outcomes contribute directly to sustainability constraints. Many businesses, and, in some cases, entire sectors (e.g. coal mining) are now facing constraints that jeopardize their future existence altogether. While some organizations have been paralyzed by increasing constraints, others are thriving because they have been able to respond with measures that defeat the root causes of sustainability constraints. Many forward-thinking organizations have been able to create prosperous new opportunities and markets by implementing more sustainable innovations in their processes, products and systems. Sustainable Innovation In recent years, innovation has intensified with respect to ideas, methods, materials, machines and devices that address the problematic constraints at their root causes. The verbs and actions that describe these innovations commonly include a handful of key words such as prevent, improve, optimize and restore. I have used these words to form the core of four guiding principles for improving sustainability by defeating the root causes of sustainability constraints. To effectively use the sustainability principles to guide strategy requires broadening our perspectives with respect to how we consider and manage waste, quality, systems and degraded assets. The principles, and how they can be applied, are described briefly below. • Prevent waste hazards and inefficiency that can lead to accidents, injuries, illnesses, resource depletion, unrealized potential, pollution, and compliance issues. • Improve quality of processes, products, communities and the environment by correcting deficiencies that can result in waste and hazards. • Optimize systems to ensure that each component is appropriate, functions correctly, and is properly integrated with other aspects. • Restore value to community, environmental and individual assets damaged from previous negligence. The figure below demonstrates how these four principles can address a specific root cause of sustainability constraints.![Principles Diagram.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVKNuC4WHeJeTvA5oZHeHojaJXDNB5xXypfP4mYLDHJFR/Principles%20Diagram.png)These principles can be applied broadly across organizations to improve diverse aspects, including: strategy, design, methods, talent, teams, machinery, materials, energy, communications, relationships, logistics, innovation, and technology. They are also compatible across diverse sectors and cultures. After all, what organization isn’t interested in preventing waste, improving quality, optimizing systems and restoring value? By following these principles, organizations can defeat the root causes of sustainability constraints. They can also be used as a compass to guide innovation in processes, products, systems and strategies. In some cases, following these principles has changed an organization’s course so dramatically that their ability to defeat problematic constraints has become a source of competitive advantage. Their application to clean technology is obvious but they can also be applied to more incremental every day challenges and opportunities. These principles are at the core of my recently released book on Sustainable Innovation. Headwinds of Opportunity: A Compass for Sustainable Innovation goes beyond philosophical and academic discussion of business sustainability to offer strategic guidance regarding how-to make all types of organizations function more sustainably while simultaneously improving their competitiveness. It differs from other references in that it approaches sustainability as an innovation – an innovative way of conducting business. The book is informed by time-tested principles of innovation diffusion that can be effectively applied to drive change. It places considerable emphasis on the “how-to” aspects of sustainability improvement and how it can be used to increase effectiveness. Considerable guidance is provided in this book regarding how to make sustainability messaging compatible with an organization’s culture. The book describes a variety of effective methods for incorporating sustainability principles into corporate roles (research, product development, human resources, accounting, strategy and risk) and operational functions (supply chain, manufacturing, quality, logistics, dealerships and customer operations). Real world case study examples are provided throughout the book to demonstrate how the methods and principles can simultaneously improve both sustainability and overall effectiveness. "body": "Like many of you, I have observed and participated in many discussions where participants debated and pontificated their views on the true meaning of sustainability. The meaning of this word can vary considerably depending on the values of individuals and organizations. Over 70 definitions have now been used in the literature but the one most commonly used is probably the UN version “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” For most organizations, sustainability strategy tends to focus on balancing and improving performance regarding three dimensions.\n\n•\tSocial Responsibility (People)\n•\tEnvironmental Stewardship (Planet)\n•\tEconomic Growth (Profit)\n\nThinking of sustainability in terms of nouns such as these can provide the rationale behind “why” we strive to operate more sustainably. To understand how to work more sustainably, we have to first understand which practices are not sustainable, their problematic aspects, and the root causes of these problems.\n\nThe Root Causes of Sustainability Constraints\nI argue that the best way to determine which actions can most effectively improve sustainability is to identify the root causes of unsustainable behaviour, then identify the best actions for defeating the root causes. Unsustainable practices tend to fall into one or more of four general categories as described below.\n\n1) Wasteful Practices\n•\tCharacteristics: Practices that result in inefficiency, hazards, accidents, attrition, defects, byproducts and excessive resource consumption\n•\tImpacts: Injuries, diseases, damages, emissions, and wastes; and consequential wasted talent, depletion of resources, degradation of resources, pollution and escalating costs\n\n2) Deficient Processes and Products\n•\tCharacteristics: Processes and products with defects that negatively affect quality, safety, productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of people, communities, businesses, resources and the environment\n•\tImpacts: Wastefulness that leads to reduced quality, productivity and availability of community, environmental and businesses assets; and consequential reduced quality of life for people\n\n3) Dysfunctional Interactions\n•\tCharacteristics: System aspects are not configured and managed in ways that maximize the benefits of exchanges between suppliers, designers, producers, customers, communities and the environment.\n•\tImpacts: Deficiency and Wastefulness regarding methods, people, machines, materials, energy, surroundings and management\n\n4) Negligent Decisions\n•\tCharacteristics: Choices that are unethical, irresponsible, and/or not compliant with regulations and policies; causing harm to people, organizations, communities and the environment\n•\tImpacts: Compliance failure; lawsuits, workforce attrition, declines in reputation and license to operate; Damage to community, environmental and personal resources; Dysfunction, Deficiency and Wastefulness\n\nManagement choices that lead to these actions and outcomes contribute directly to sustainability constraints. Many businesses, and, in some cases, entire sectors (e.g. coal mining) are now facing constraints that jeopardize their future existence altogether. \n\nWhile some organizations have been paralyzed by increasing constraints, others are thriving because they have been able to respond with measures that defeat the root causes of sustainability constraints. Many forward-thinking organizations have been able to create prosperous new opportunities and markets by implementing more sustainable innovations in their processes, products and systems. \n\nSustainable Innovation \nIn recent years, innovation has intensified with respect to ideas, methods, materials, machines and devices that address the problematic constraints at their root causes. The verbs and actions that describe these innovations commonly include a handful of key words such as prevent, improve, optimize and restore. I have used these words to form the core of four guiding principles for improving sustainability by defeating the root causes of sustainability constraints. \n\nTo effectively use the sustainability principles to guide strategy requires broadening our perspectives with respect to how we consider and manage waste, quality, systems and degraded assets. The principles, and how they can be applied, are described briefly below.\n\n• Prevent waste hazards and inefficiency that can lead to accidents, injuries, illnesses, resource depletion, unrealized potential, pollution, and compliance issues.\n• Improve quality of processes, products, communities and the environment by correcting deficiencies that can result in waste and hazards. \n• Optimize systems to ensure that each component is appropriate, functions correctly, and is properly integrated with other aspects. \n• Restore value to community, environmental and individual assets damaged from previous negligence.\n\nThe figure below demonstrates how these four principles can address a specific root cause of sustainability constraints.![Principles Diagram.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVKNuC4WHeJeTvA5oZHeHojaJXDNB5xXypfP4mYLDHJFR/Principles%20Diagram.png)These principles can be applied broadly across organizations to improve diverse aspects, including: strategy, design, methods, talent, teams, machinery, materials, energy, communications, relationships, logistics, innovation, and technology. They are also compatible across diverse sectors and cultures. After all, what organization isn’t interested in preventing waste, improving quality, optimizing systems and restoring value? \n\nBy following these principles, organizations can defeat the root causes of sustainability constraints. These principles are at the core of my recently released book on Sustainable Innovation.\n\nHeadwinds of Opportunity: A Compass for Sustainable Innovation goes beyond philosophical and academic discussion of business sustainability to offer strategic guidance regarding how-to make all types of organizations function more sustainably while simultaneously improving their competitiveness. It differs from other references in that it approaches sustainability as an innovation – an innovative way of conducting business. The book is informed by time-tested principles of innovation diffusion that can be effectively applied to drive change. It places considerable emphasis on the “how-to” aspects of sustainability improvement and how it can be used to increase effectiveness.\n\nConsiderable guidance is provided in this book regarding how to make sustainability messaging compatible with an organization’s culture. The book describes a variety of effective methods for incorporating sustainability principles into corporate roles (research, product development, human resources, accounting, strategy and risk) and operational functions (supply chain, manufacturing, quality, logistics, dealerships and customer operations). Real world case study examples are provided throughout the book to demonstrate how the methods and principles can simultaneously improve both sustainability and overall effectiveness.\n\nA more detailed excerpt from the book can be accessed at this link:http://www.book2look.com/book/4eOKwt5gLy\n\nIt can be purchased at the publisher's site (https://www.routledge.com/Headwinds-of-Opportunity-A-Compass-for-Sustainable-Innovation/Lindsey/p/book/9781783537600) or on Amazon, Google etc. ![Headwinds Cover Small.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSnxsfjWDJ4u32K2QT3fH83sJE5m9j1ZAfF9HU9yyUfGk/Headwinds%20Cover%20Small.png)",
