titleThe Relationship Between Money and Happiness - Why Being Happy is More Important Than How Much You Have
bodyThe relationship between happiness and money, it seems, is much more complex than you might imagine. At first glance, money and happiness seem to belong in different worlds. But money and happiness do indeed belong together. Fortunately for you, though, you do not need to do the messy untangling by yourself. Over the last quarter century, psychologists and sociologists have banded together in a effort to sort out just the why-and-hows of money and happiness. https://images.pexels.com/photos/2068975/pexels-photo-2068975.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=2&h=650&w=940 [source](https://images.pexels.com/photos/2068975/pexels-photo-2068975.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=2&h=650&w=940) In a new book, Getting You Noticed, an acclaimed psychologist named Jessica Tracy recommends that you look at how you spend your money each month and ask yourself if you are happier, healthier, wealthier or more satisfied with your life. Your answer will tell you whether you are spending your money on what you want, how you want to spend it, and how happy you are. The book points out that you will find that, if you keep track of how much you spend on clothing, entertainment, eating out, cosmetics, vacations and so forth, you will quickly be able to see which categories you fit into and which ones you do not. When you start to get used to this, however, you may be surprised to find that money and happiness do indeed go hand in hand. To get a clearer picture, think of your overall well-being as determined by several factors, such as your attitudes about your job, health, relationships, education, hobbies, social activities and so on. Money and happiness then depend on how well-off you are as a whole. Money, according to the book, is an essential aspect of well-being. People who are better off financially have higher levels of overall well-being, are happier with their jobs and have stronger bonds with family and friends. The more money you have, of course, the happier you are, as well as how happy you are with your life. According to the research, the fulfillment curve, which shows the relationship between income and levels of satisfaction, runs smoothly along the line of money. As your income increases, the satisfaction level also increases. Money and happiness then move in a straight line. In order to further explore whether money and well-being goes hand in hand, consider a couple of examples. Imagine that your neighbor's annual income is $80,000. Then consider how much money she spends on her car insurance, groceries, utilities, recreation and other expenses. If you were to calculate the amount of time she would need to devote to these activities to be able to bring her complete well-being, you would find that her total cost of living is much lower than your neighbor who lives in a much wealthier neighborhood. If you look at what your parents spend on their lives, you will see that they are much happier than you are. Their enjoyment of life comes from their family and their enjoyment of spending time with friends. They spend less time shopping because they are able to get cheaper items at a local store, and they spend less time performing activities that bring them little or no fulfillment. By looking at how much time people like you spend being happy instead of how much time they spend being unhappy, we can get used to how much happier we are. Then, we can begin to change our spending habits. By changing our spending habits, we can find more money and more fulfillment in our lives. We simply become happier with our circumstances. This same psychology professor shared that by buying happiness, we have to first change our spending habits. In other words, we must learn how to buy happiness instead of what we think that we need. We must become mindful of the things that bring us happiness and then we can begin to apply the theory of purchasing happiness to our lives. By doing this, we will be able to stop the downward spiral of spending money and start to live in abundance.

titleCauses of Depression
bodyMajor depression can seriously impact your quality of life and ability to enjoy living life. It can also cause a dramatic reduction in your relationships, job and work life and more frequent depressive moods can occur. Depressive mood swings can last for weeks to months, and cycles can occur over time as well. In women, depression is often linked to menopause or the hormonal changes that accompany it. Depression can be a silent killer, but if left untreated, it can destroy your quality of life, relationships and sense of self. https://www.psychiatristinrohini.in/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/CAUSES-OF-DEPRESSION.png [image credit](https://www.psychiatristinrohini.in/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/CAUSES-OF-DEPRESSION.png) There are certain risk factors that increase the likelihood that someone will develop depression. These include stress, substance abuse, poor diet, not getting enough exercise, having a faulty understanding of one's body and/or brain chemistry, and not getting enough sleep. As we have mentioned before, depression is a common symptom of many illnesses including Alzheimer's disease, which is a degenerative mental disorder that takes several years to develop. Stress, poor diet, not getting enough sleep, not exercising, and a faulty understanding of one's body and/or brain chemistry can lead to serious mood problems throughout life. There is an important distinction between stress and depression. While they both can be very real problems that can cause physical pain, they are not the same thing. Depression is a depressive state, and a stressful response in the brain is what pushes your mind into that state. On the other hand, stress response is how your body deals with actual threats or dangers, such as physical injury or a dangerous situation. Antidepressant medications can play a role in managing mood swings and depression. They work to change the chemical compounds in the brain which are responsible for causing mood changes. There are three types of antidepressants, including tricyclics (TCA), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. These medications are divided into two main categories: monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs, which inhibit the conversion of serotonin into its constituent molecules, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs, which help regulate serotonin levels in the brain. Because some people respond to treatments differently than others, it is important to discuss your treatment options with your doctor to determine the best course of treatment for you. As mentioned above, people with mild depression may feel better after taking an anti-depressant. However, if your depression lasts for more than a few weeks, it may be time to talk to your doctor about possible side effects. Some of the side effects of depression may include excessive weight gain, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, decreased sex drive, sleep disturbance, increased appetite, nausea, and general feelings of anxiety, agitation, or fatigue. While the symptoms may vary from case to case, most people who experience these symptoms will be prescribed a form of medication to help them through their depression. Common depression medications include anti-depressants and tranquilizers. Another type of depression medications include mood stabilizers, also referred to as MAOIs, that are usually used to treat patients who have already experienced significant changes in their moods but do not yet qualify as bipolar disorder. Doctors often prescribe MAOIs such as Man1 Manco, Prozac, and Zoloft for those who are depressed but do not yet have Bipolar or Clinical Depression Disorder. MAOIs work by changing the chemical balance in the brain, causing the cells to assume a more stable state and allowing the patient's moods to return to normal more quickly. This is often vital in people who have had heart attacks or who have been sick and are not responding to other forms of treatment. Some people with depression who take MAOIs find that they enjoy a sense of well being after the medication has been prescribed. There are also alternative forms of treatment available for those who suffer from depression or bipolar disorder. Yoga, hypnosis, acupuncture, relaxation techniques, biofeedback, and psychotherapy can all be effective in treating depression and controlling mood disorders. Many of these methods are often used in conjunction with traditional forms of medicine. Many patients find that a combination of prescription medications and alternative forms of treatment are most effective. A person with depression or Bipolar Disorder should discuss all of their options with their physician to determine which treatment will offer the best results. There is no one single cause of depression. Although there is a strong connection between major events in a person's life and the onset of depression, there is no known cause, as well. What research suggests is that major life changes, especially the loss of a loved one or a traumatic experience can change brain chemistry and cause changes in the chemical balances of the brain that lead to depression. Alternative treatments, such as those mentioned above, may help to alleviate the symptoms associated with depression and allow a person to get back to living their life normally. When suffering from depression, it's important to consult your doctor to ensure that the treatment you're considering is one that can work for you. **References** https://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/causes-depression https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/clinical-depression/causes/ https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/what-causes-depression

titleGenetics Makes Alcoholism Less Likely
bodySome people possess a gene variant that protects them from becoming alcoholics by making them highly sensitive to ethanol. There is a great deal of variation among human beings when it comes to how their bodies process alcohol, and many different factors influence the speed and severity with which people begin to feel inebriated, such as sex, weight, and prior drinking history. Now researchers have pinpointed a gene that seems to make people who possess it feel drunk faster and thus be less prone to alcoholism in their later lives. The findings are described in the online edition of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. ### Gene For Alcoholic Sensitivity Approximately ten to twenty percent of the population possess the gene CYP2E1. These gene had been previously linked to alcohol sensitivity, but the latest study, conducted at the University of North Carolina, strengthened the association. CYP2E1 works by coding for an enzyme that breaks down ethanol and other toxins in the brain; it also incidentally plays a role in the metabolism of nicotine, though this particular study concentrated on its alcohol sensitivity effects. https://images.pexels.com/photos/4031436/pexels-photo-4031436.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=2&h=650&w=940 [source](https://images.pexels.com/photos/4031436/pexels-photo-4031436.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=2&h=650&w=940) ### Gene Owners Got Drunk Faster Researchers recruited 248 pairs of siblings so they could compare subjects to their genetic kin as well as to the unrelated other study subjects. Most of the volunteers had at least one parent who suffered from alcoholism, and most were not experienced drinkers themselves. Participants were given the equivalent of three alcoholic drinks, then breathalyzed, measure for amount of "sway" when they stood, and asked to report how drunk they felt. Consistently, the subjects who reported feeling the drunkest the soonest were the people who possessed the CYP2E1 gene. It had long been suspected that people who get drunk the fastest in their young adult years were far less likely to develop alcoholism later in life, and this study seemed to provide a genetic component for that conclusion. It is not thought that the gene itself discourages alcoholism directly, but rather that people who possess the gene simply learn to moderate their alcohol intake early because of their more intense reaction to ethanol. ### CYP2E1 and Free Radicals When a person drinks, most of the alcohol is broken down much like a sugar is, with the liver metabolizing the ethanol and turning it into energy. But the CYP2E1 gene regulates the production of an enzyme in the brain that breaks down ethanol and produces free radicals. Because of this, possessors of the gene, while fortunately unlikely to become alcoholics, are unfortunately at a higher risk of developing certain cancers. **Source**: Parry, Wynne. titleEvolutionary Psychology: Depression
bodyEvolutionary psychology rotates around the principle that the behaviors we manifest today are a result of survival mechanisms that our species developed throughout evolution. Based on this theory, abnormal behavior is seen as the malfunctioning of mechanisms that once increased the fitness of our species. There are behaviors that are universally shared by all humans, despite cultural and ethnic differences. Facial expressions and fight-or-flight responses are just two of the many genetically inherited behaviors that our species developed through time and that survive today because they increased the chances of survival for the species itself. But can abnormal psychology be explained in the same terms? Can a pathological process that brings disadvantage to the individual be seen as an ancient adaptive response to the environment? https://static.nautil.us/11597_7212a6567c8a6c513f33b858d868ff80.png [source](https://static.nautil.us/11597_7212a6567c8a6c513f33b858d868ff80.png) ### Evolutionary Roots of Depression According to David Buss, psychiatric illnesses develop when one of the evolutionary mechanisms our species developed through time is activated in an environment for which it was not projected. This can happen in three different ways: 1. The mechanism is activated in inappropriate contexts. 2. The mechanism is not activated when necessary. 3. The mechanism cannot coordinate adequately with others. At first glance, depression does not seem to be in any way useful to our species, but according to evolutionary psychologists such as Baron-Cohen, our ancestors with a predisposition to depression must have survived at a better rate than those that were not predisposed. ### Theory of Involuntary Submission An evolutionary linearity between human and animal behavior may help to explain depression. According to McGuire and Raleigh, vervet monkeys possess a cerebral mechanism that connects their mood to social status. In their studies, the researchers found that dominant male monkeys had double the levels of serotonin in their brain compared to all the other males in the group, and that the loss of social status would immediately halve those levels and provoke behaviors of withdrawal and loss of appetite. In applying this theory to the human species, Price and Sloman have advanced the possibility that depression could be seen as a behavioral strategy used by losing members of a group in a hierarchical struggle. In these terms, depression is seen as a strategy used by an individual to signal submission to the leader and to protect himself from physical harm. Price and Sloman believe that this strategy, in humans, is displayed in three ways: 1. Inhibition of aggressive behavior: diminishes the probability of attack by the dominant member 2. Submission: informs the rival that there is no threat, and signals supporters that the individual has no intention to react 3. Acceptance: submission encourages the individual to accept the loss of the competition. This process brings reconciliation and the end of the conflict. ### Does Evolutionary Psychology Explain Depression? Evolutionary theories of depression may need further research. However explained, depression remains a pathological illness that is difficult to frame as an adaptive strategy that allowed our ancestors to better survive. The level of distress depression causes may lead us to the assumption, instead, that a response mechanism that was once efficient in resolving a specific survival problem is malfunctioning today. Keeping these considerations in mind, our knowledge of the disease may be increased if accompanied by more recent biological and psychiatric studies. #### Sources: Buss, D.M. Evolutionary Psychology. titleBook Review: "The Invisible Ring"
bodyThis fascinating book entitled *the Invisible Ring* by Anne Bishop takes place in the world she set up for her Black Jewels Trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, Queen of Darkness). You don't have to have read them to read this one. It is actually set in a time period before the trilogy and only two characters from the trilogy are in this novel. Dorothea, an evil witch, and Daemon (Sadi), a black-jeweled warlord.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91OwCNzWngL.jpg
source
In this novel, we the corruption manifesting that leads into the Black Jewels Trilogy. I am not sure how much time passes between this novel and the trilogy. In this world, the blood, as they are called, have magic. Everyone who can do magic on a larger scale wears a jewel–you wear one jewel when you are born and later preform what they call an offering to the darkness to receive a more powerful jewel. The darker the jewel, the more powerful the person black is the darkest. The society was once set up where a Queen (one born with the power and I guess temperament to rule) ruled and warlords (blood males born to be a warlord) protected them because they wanted to and because they cared about the Queen whom they served. Dorothea has corrupted the system she is not a Queen–she is a simple priestess who should not be ruling but she killed or broke (during a witches (all blood females) virgin night a male can break a witches mind causing her to lose her ability to use her power) her rivals. Now she rules by fear and putting rings of obedience (they transfer pain) on males (around an organ on a male where his pain tolerance is usually low). Her taint is now spreading throughout the kingdoms. For the plot in this novel, Dorothea is trying to bring the kingdom that is ruled by the Gray Lady (Queen who wears a grey jewel) under control. In order to do so, she needs to kill the Gray Lady and replace her with one of her pets. The Gray Lady comes to the slave auction in Raej every year to buy slaves. Dorothea wants to make sure she doesn't make it home. Enter Jared, a red jeweled warlord. He was taken from his home and sold as a pleasure slave, he has been serving as such for nine years until he snapped and killed his last Queen--owner. He is expected to be sold as a laborer for the salt mines (no one lives long there). Instead for some reason the Gray Lady purchases him. The Blood can ride the winds to anywhere in the kingdom–making journeys quicker and others who do not have the power to do so themselves can ride on a carriage handled by someone with the power to do so. The Gray Lady purchases her ride home, but an ambush awaits her–she is warned by Sadi, (whose goal in life is to undermine Dorothea). So the Gray Lady buys a wagon and begins the journey home overland. Jared somehow becomes the dominant male among the slaves and becomes the "leader" of the little troupe. Can he remember how to serve honorably to a Queen, fight the urge to flee home, and get the Gray Lady home alive? I love Anne Bishop's Jewel novels because our concepts of darkness and light are constantly turned upside down. She also deals wonderfully with the battle between the sexes. There are threads of honor and right and wrong running all through out this novel. Her characters are wonderfully developed. You can actually picture them and begin to feel for them. I actually felt like I knew Jared and I felt for him because of some of the decisions he had to make. Her novels are very detailed with her own new world for her plot to take place in–with all kinds of rules. It takes some time to figure everything out, but its not too confusing. Her novels always catch me and I can't put them down until I am finished. If you enjoyed her Black Jewels Trilogy–you'll love this one as well. If you haven't read her before, then I would recommend that you pick any of her novels up. You can read this one without having read the trilogy– but just go ahead and buy all four–you are going to want to read them anyway.

"body": "This fascinating book entitled *the Invisible Ring* by Anne Bishop takes place in the world she set up for her Black Jewels Trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, Queen of Darkness). You don't have to have read them to read this one. It is actually set in a time period before the trilogy and only two characters from the trilogy are in this novel. Dorothea, an evil witch, and Daemon (Sadi), a black-jeweled warlord. \n \n
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91OwCNzWngL.jpg
source
\n \nIn this novel, we the corruption manifesting that leads into the Black Jewels Trilogy. \n \nFor the plot in this novel, Dorothea is trying to bring the kingdom that is ruled by the Gray Lady (Queen who wears a grey jewel) under control.
