      "body": "NASA astronaut Jeanette Epps was on track to become the first African-American crew member on the International Space Station this year, but the space agency announced today that she has been pulled from her mission for unspecified reasons. She was supposed to launch as part of Expedition 56/67 in June 2018.\n\nInstead, NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor will be taking Epps’ place. Like Epps, Auñón-Chancellor was one of the 14 astronaut candidates that NASA selected out of 3,500 applicants in 2009. Epps came to NASA by way of a PhD in aerospace engineering and seven years at the CIA as a technical intelligence officer. Auñón-Chancellor is medical doctor with certifications in internal and aerospace medicine.\n\nNASA’s announcement didn’t explain why the agency pulled Epps from the mission. “A number of factors are considered when making flight assignments; these decisions are personnel matters for which NASA doesn’t provide information,” said Brandi Dean, a spokesperson for NASA, in an email to The Verge. Now, instead of taking what would have been her first flight to orbit, Epps will be working out of the Astronaut Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. She could still be assigned to future missions, the space agency said in a statement.\n\nOther African-American astronauts have visited the Space Station, including Leland Melvin who encouraged Epps to apply for NASA’s 2009 class. I care too much about the university. Time will tell if I’m going to be a continuing distraction.”\n\nNow, as the UC student government and student protesters demand that Pattiz resign, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and two other regents are raising questions about whether the Board of Regents has dealt too lightly with their colleague while cracking down on sexual harassment elsewhere in the university.\n\nIn addition, a UC labor union has proposed a Constitutional amendment to give the state Legislature authority to remove a regent.\n\n“Unfortunately, while California’s Constitution gives the governor the power to appoint regents to 12-year terms, there is no provision granting authority to remove regents,” Kathryn Lybarger, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, said in a statement. “Inaction cannot be the solution.”\n\n\nThe state Constitution allows the governor to appoint 18 of the 26 UC regents to 12-year terms. The remaining eight regents — including the governor, lieutenant governor, state schools chief, a UC student and other office-holders — serve automatically while in office.\n\nThe controversy over Pattiz came to light in Oct. 2016, when actress Heather McDonald posted the recording of him on her “Juicy Scoop” podcast, which by then was no longer hosted by Podcast One, Pattiz’s Los Angeles company.\n\nMcDonald had been recording ads for her podcast when Pattiz knocked on her studio door. Listeners can hear Pattiz calling out that her show is becoming more popular. McDonald asks Pattiz to let her finish the ad. As she begins touting the product, a brassiere made of memory foam, she gets flustered and stumbles on the words.\n\n“You’re making me nervous now,” she tells Pattiz. “Let me do one more.”\n\nPattiz says: “Wait a minute. Suit accuses UC Regent of brandishing gun at employee\nMcDonald said she often felt uncomfortable during her weekly visits to the recording studio because Pattiz repeatedly commented on her appearance or joked about following her into the bathroom.\n\nPattiz has denied creating a hostile work environment.\n\nA year later, as growing numbers of women have been speaking out about sexual harassment and the issue has become acknowledged as intolerable, the incident has resurfaced.\n\nOn Nov. 29, three regents asked UC President Janet Napolitano and regents Chairman George Kieffer what they have done to discipline and investigate Pattiz.\n\n\n“This has been a matter of deep concern at many levels of the UC, especially in light of the systemwide work we have done to address sexual harassment and sexual violence,” wrote Newsom, state schools chief Tom Torlakson, and student Regent Paul Monge.\n\nKieffer responded that Pattiz was neither investigated nor disciplined because he wasn’t on university business when made his statements to the actress. Kieffer reiterated that the regents have since changed the policy so that outside misconduct can trigger an investigation.\n\nKieffer added that McDonald never filed a complaint with the regents. And he said that since the incident, the regents have been required to undergo the same anti-sexual harassment training that’s required of UC employees.\n\nThe letter from the three regents mentioned the November regents meeting, when dozens of UC Berkeley students protested against Pattiz.\n\n“Students have made it clear that they do not feel comfortable with Mr. Pattiz serving and representing (them) on the UC Board of Regents,” the regents wrote, adding that the UC Student Association approved a resolution in January calling on Pattiz to step down. (The students approved a second, updated resolution in October. Both call the regents hypocritical for disciplining UC employees for sexual harassment but not their colleague.)\n\nThe regents’ letter also cited a lawsuit against Pattiz filed in September by a former producer at Podcast One who accused Pattiz of brandishing a gun and retaliating against him for giving the harassment recording to McDonald.\n\nFinally, the letter criticized Pattiz for telling the San Jose Mercury News that student protesters “ought to be ashamed of themselves.”\n\n\nPattiz has denied the allegations in the lawsuit. According to UC, because of the pool’s age, the university would need to make a significant investment for it to remain functional.\n\nThe university does not field a swim team, but it does have a roster of more than 500 student-athletes in various sports, so Charleston will re-purpose that space, with renovations beginning in August 2018.\n\nWith that, the community swim programs housed at UC’s pool will move to the YMCA of Kanawha Valley. Among those is the Huntington Y Charleston Aquatic Team (HYCAT), which holds the annual City Meet pitting club pools around the Kanawha Valley against each other.\n\nAs for the team, HYCAT executive director Greg Olson said the plan as of now — “It’s a fluid situation,” he said — was for HYCAT to move to the YMCA under a new name and operate under YMCA logistics and policies.\n\nName changes aren’t new to the organization, which started as the Greater Charleston Swimming Association, became SUN Aquatics in 1976, the University of Charleston Aquatic Team in 1992 and HYCAT in 2002. But the UC pool has been HYCAT’s home for more than 40 years.\n\n“Change is always hard,” said Olson, who said he will not be making the move to the YMCA with HYCAT. “We just want to see the kids succeed. With our ‘Learn to Swim’ program that we started 42 years ago, we’ve taught probably 50,000 people how to swim.\n\n\n\n“It’s really gratifying when you have a parent come to the program and say, ‘I learned to swim here and now my kids are learning to swim here,’” he added.\n\nThe City Meet will be held once more at the UC pool next summer, but the options for the event after that are numerous. YMCA youth development director Cindy Hemsworth said the age divisions and alignment will remain the same, but they’ve tossed around the idea of moving the City Meet outdoors, having pools bid to hold the meet or holding it at a pool the YMCA oversees, like at Coonskin Park or Pioneer Park in East Bank.\n\n“We’re thinking outside the box about what we can do,” Hemsworth said. “Nothing is finalized. We’re just exercising a couple of options.”",
