In a new market. This time you can get there before the big corporations take over. \n\nBitcoin and crypto came out of the shadows and into the limelight last year\n\nStellar was up 14,441%\nDash soared 9,265%\nRipple climbed 36,018%.\n\n2017 was an amazing year for crypto investors.\n\nBut if we switch to 2018, the difference is stark.\n\nOn 8 January 2018, the entire crypto network was valued at almost a Trillion dollars (US$830 billion)\n\nBy 6 February, only four weeks later, the market had more than halved in value. All the way down to just $281 billion.\n\nThat was a 66% drop in a single month.\n\nBitcoin dived 69%, Ethereum shed 59% and Litecoin dropped 70%.\n\nAlthough we’ve recently seen the market recover and most cryptos bounce back, heaps of financial analysts have declared the recent correction as \"the end of cryptocurrency\"\n\nYeah, well... what do they know?\n\nNumber one: this is a new asset class, and historical rules cannot be used for disruptive technology (who knew 20 years ago that we'd be sharing cars with strangers, staying in their homes, or spending hours a day on social media?)\n\nNumber two: although the history of crypto is only a decade, there's a pattern:\n**Every time cryptos have fallen they’ve come back stronger than ever.**\n\n23 January 2014: JP Morgan CEO, Jamie Dimon called bitcoin ‘a terrible store of value’. Yes, at the time, bitcoin had halved (as it does most Januarys). \n\nBy March 2017, bitcoin had recovered all of its gains, and then some.\n\nSeptember 2017, Jamie Dimon called bitcoin ‘a fraud’. Bitcoin prices fell from around $5,000 to less than $3,000.\n\nIn the months that followed, bitcoin raced to $20,000\n\nYes, bitcoin tanked again after its peak. But the show is not over yet. In fact, it's just beginning. \n\nA few years ago, bitcoin and crypto was used almost exclusively by \"geeks, nerds and weirdos\" (they said the same thing about the internet in 1995). \n\nThen things started to become more mainstream, and millions of \"mum and dad\" investors from all over the world piled into crypto.\n\nWatch what happens now, as hundreds of millions of people have all seen the power and utility of the underlying blockchain. It's not just making money out of a crypto currency climb; blockchain shows us that we can do bank settlements and payments *instantly* without waiting three days for a bank transfer. \n\nVery few people mail a stamped letter to a friend now, once they have used email or instant messaging. It was inspired by a military mentor, and dedicated to Kipling's son. The stoic advice for bold conduct and keeping a “stiff upper lip” in British society aside, the poem has been adopted by warriors, sporting teams, academics and also been heralded as “the essence of the Gita” by an Indian writer. \n\n<b>How does this apply to modern markets? </b>\n\nWe could be cheeky and say, “If you can keep your money whilst all around you are losing theirs... you are doing exceptionally well in crypto” and it would not be far from the truth. \n\nIn 2017, up to 50% of new ICO's were declared to be “scams” by many media reports. This startling figure has been since upgraded by new reports out of the USA. \n\nThe New York-based Satis Group, a premier ICO advisory company which also works as a digital asset focused investment bank, conducted a study based on publicly available sources. They claim that “up to 80% of new ICO's are scams”, with figures even going as high as 92%.\n\nThe Satis study results reveal that of the whole market, a whopping 81% of the ICOs turned out to be scams. Another 6% fell into the “Failed” category, and 5% had “Gone Dead”, taking the total for “Failure to List” group to 92 percent. \n\nObviously, there were many scammers in the crypto space, who took advantage of ICO-hype to “create their own bank” out of thin air and promises, and then rob investors blind. Ditto for watching Ethereum fall from $1200 to $500. If you were an investor who was late to the cryptocurrency party, you could be sitting on a loss of 70%. Ouch! \n\nFacebook officially banned advertising for new ICO's earlier this year, and in March, popular short-form social media Twitter followed suit; citing that “up to 40% of cryptocurrencies are scams”. We felt that the Facebook ban was not so much to save users from scam ads (let's face it, it could be argued that 40%+ of weight-loss ads are scams also, yet they remain on Facebook); it was possible that Facebook was banning “competitor” ads...\n\nJust as Facebook did not allow its users to promote alternative social media site Steemit.com, we felt that the Facebook ICO ban was a pre-emptive strike to quash alternate ICO's before Facebook announced... guess what, it was going to create a Facebook coin for its “Marketplace” feature. \n\nWith recent revelations that Facebook may have failed to properly oversight data-mining and may possibly have been complicit in US election-rigging, public trust in the social media behemoth has taken a giant hit. The lack of trust this engenders may mean that a Facebook currency could have to take a back seat and launch in 6-12 months, once trust is restored. Facebook stock is down 20% over the data-mining and election-rigging issues.\n\nFollowing falls of 50% to 70% in crypto-giants Bitcoin and Ethereum, the majority of alternative cryptos (“alt-coins”) were similarly sold down over the past few weeks. However, there is some good news.\n\n<b>Crypto →  There's good news & bad news </b>\n\n<i>The good: more goodies coming to market </i>\n\nDespite what you read in the media, the facts are clear: Crypto new business sales are going through the roof. More money has been raised since the start of 2018 through crypto ICOs and token sales than traditional finance venture capital funding — many think it’s a trend that’s going to continue.\n\n“Investments in Crypto Startups in 2018 will exceed 2017”, claims Eren Sengezer, on March 6th in FXStreet. \n\nIn another article published on February 27th, Crunchbase author Jason D. Rowley analyzed the investment trend in crypto startups in 2018 and compared it to the previous year to conclude that this year's ventures could surpass 2017 despite the ICO hype. Below are some key takeaways from the article:\n\nAt the end of February, 2018’s venture fundraising totals are over 40% of 2017’s highs, according to Crunchbase data.\n\nThis could mean that companies are “front-loading” or trying to get capital in earlier, before the crypto hype dies out, potentially putting money into ideas which may be under-developed; or, it could mean that projects for 2018 could be more than twice as large as 2017's records.\n\nConsidering the cost of taking a new idea to list on the stock market, and the low barriers to issuing coins or tokens, many more businesses could use cryptocurrencies to raise capital in the next few months and years. Initial Coin Offerings (ICO's) are a viable alternative to a stock market Initial Public Offering (IPO) as a means of raising funds from investors. \n\nA coin offering or ICO, can cost, quite literally, 98% less than an IPO or stock launch. This leaves more money in the hands of investors and more funds with the issuer, meaning the business can grow better and faster from an ICO than an IPO.\n\nThe downside of the ICO vs IPO debate is that, from an ICO, stock brokers, large banks and regulators such as government agencies could make less money. Rememeber that the companies and investors could make more. If you're an investor, you could be OK with that.   \n\n2017’s record fund raisers included: Coinbase’s $108.1 million, $43.45 million for Chinese ASIC chip maker Canaan Creative, and a $42.5 million raised by bitcoin wallet provider BitGo.\n\n2018 is already off to a strong start with a $75 million by wallet-maker Ledger, $18 million in Russian blockchain-for-cargo-tracking platform QUASA, and $10 million invested in SF-based Harbor Platform.\n\n<b>Bankera Purchases Major Banking Asset </b>\n\nThe Boston Coin project invested into Bankera (BNK) late last year, when they stated their intention to become a crossover network between cryptocurrency and traditional banking. We believed that they could make waves in the marketplace, and potentially bring the new crypto interface to the sectors of the market who still had faith in traditional banks. Considering how some of the early Bitcoin investors spooked the general public by talking over their heads, BNK could represent a gentler introduction to crypto-banking. \n\nBankera recently announced that they have acquired Pacific Private Bank (PPB). PPB was founded in Vanuatu in 1997 and specializes in \"wealth and asset management services for individual clients.\" This means that they have financial advisers and lawyers as well as stock trading and internet banking facilities. \n\nBankera insists that PPB will be its own entity and they will both focus on their own goals. PPB will deal with fiat-based solutions while Bankera will provide both crypto and fiat solutions.\n\nBankera's aim is to build a fully digital crypto-bank, complete with a debit card for crypto. Investors also plan to benefit from being paid returns, just as you would expect when owning stock in a bank. News of the PPB acquisition will surely provide a major boost to BNK prices. You can get into the BNK ICO here. <https://bit.ly/2qKaN5y> \n\nAside from being paid “dividends” or interest for holding the coin, one of the more interesting things about BNK is their plan to make coin transfers free on the BNK exchange. As many investors may lose money in brokerage or “gas” when selling or trading on exchanges, eg. selling Bitcoin to buy Ethereum, it is intended that BNK will make it cheaper with a 2-step process. Therefore, trading BTC to BNK and then trading BNK to ETH will be more cost-effective than trading direct BTC to ETH. That's welcome news. \n\n<b>It's not just Russia, China & Iceland, now England dives into Bitcoin Mining</b>\n\nBladetec, a supplier of high-powered IT equipment in the UK, is planning to build a bitcoin mining farm, named The Third Bladetec Bitcoin Mining Company Ltd’ (TBBMC), across three locations in England reportedly worth £10 million ($13.9 million). Bladetec is looking to raise the money from investors and the 3500 square foot mining farm will be built in London, Suffolk, and Surrey.\n\nDeclan Kennedy, CFO and one of three admins who will manage TBBMC added, \"We are entirely focused on maximizing shareholder returns and so, understanding the relatively volatile nature of Bitcoins, we have allowed for four different growth scenarios with up to 45% capital growth per annum.\"\n\nNote that “up to” also includes the number 0%, and could also be a negative number, so be sure to Do Your Own Research (DYOR) before investing into a mining operation. In any case, it's reassuring to see a British company getting heavily involved in crypto.\n \n<b>Wyoming, USA: Has Passed a Bill Exempting Crypto from Property Tax</b>\n\nWyoming is one of nine US states that does not have any income tax. State Representative Tyler Lindholm announced that Bitcoin miners will not incur any property tax, income tax or corporate tax.\n\n\"The senate of Wyoming has passed a decision (Bill 111) exempting cryptocurrencies from property taxation in the state. The straight forward law defines “virtual currencies” as any type of digital representation of value that is used as a medium of exchange, unit of account or store of value, and is not recognized as legal tender by the United States government.\"\n\nThe bill was one of the 5 bills that were passed in the Senate, related to cryptocurrency regulations. Since Wyoming is one of the least populated states and acccounts for more than 40% of coal mined and excess production capacities of electricity, it is no wonder that the State wants Bitcoin miners to come and use the State's production power to mine Bitcoin and encourage the Blockchain industry.\n\n<b>The Bad News: </b>\n\nBitcoin and other coins were hammered recently in the markets. This has been from a variety of reasons, including the Twitter ban, loss of faith in some cryptos, and losses in the broader stock market. Stock losses were linked to Trump's call for trade sanctions with China, and news that Facebook may have been guilty of conspiring to mine or sell user data and interfere with US elections. \n\nBitcoin was sold heavily, testing limits under US$8k, where buyers have so far re-emerged to support this price as fair value. The altcoins fell in tandem with BTC, with double-digit drops in the top 30 cryptos by market cap; the only exception was Verge. \n\nThe total crypto market cap stands at $311b, down from $350b a few days ago, and a long way from its $800b highs of 2017. \n\n<b>Twitter has banned all ICO advertising; following the lead of Facebook</b>\n\nA Twitter spokesperson said in an emailed statement: “Advertisement of Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and token sales will be prohibited globally. We know that this type of content is often associated with deception and fraud, both organic and paid, and are proactively implementing a number of signals to prevent these types of accounts from engaging with others in a deceptive manner.”\n\n<b>The crypto market can be jumpy, and reacts badly to bad news </b>\n\nRecent price action continues to demonstrate the 'reactive' nature of the market, with news of Twitter banning crypto adding fuel to the fire. While the G20 decision to stay away from further crypto regulations for the time being prompted fresh capital into the space last week, in a 'reactive' environment, traders tend to be driven by short-term sentiment, which leads to being in and out of the market for quick profits versus holding their positions. \n\n<b>WOMP WOMP WOMP -- did you get womped?</b>\n\nIn the stock market, a \"price correction\" is defined as a decline of at least 10% ; a \"bear market\" is a decline of over 30%. Between 17 December 2017 and 6 February 2018, the Bitcoin price declined by 70%.\n\nBostonCoin sold all its bitcoin holdings in December 2017, avoiding the massive drop. We later bought in during February and March at less than half the old price, and although still fluctuating, the BTC price is stabilising within distinct \"fair value\" bands.  \n\nAs reported in Feb 2018 update, when Bitcoin dropped by 60-70%, BostonCoin only dropped around 15%; a significant difference for investors. \n\nIf you had $10 000 in Bitcoin in December, you could have been worth around $3 000 in Feb. This means that your BTC investment would need to more than *triple* (that is, go up by 334%) to get back to where you started. Bitcoin (BTC) reached record highs in 2017, coaxing other coins along with it, before diving rapidly this month. What’s with that?\n\nRocketing up from sub-$1000 in January 2017, the first cryptocurrency hit highs of $25 000 towards the end of 2017, causing it to appear in mainstream TV, press & social media.\n\nAll of a sudden, it seemed that “everyone” was a “Bitcoin expert” and everyone had an opinion. At least four Multi-Level Marketing companies launched bitcoin investment packages, and crypto was the topic of conversation at many parties.\n\nBut then the market crashed, as it does every year since it began, taking many other coins (and many “experts” down with it).\n\n<h3>The history & the histrionics:</h3>\n![bitcoins2v2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQi1rgcwPLtbDBmbaXjRBpXborZFUiGuyuEtbYtucb1Ff/bitcoins2v2.jpg)\n\nIn 2009, bitcoin was practically worthless, traded as a curio by a handful of cryptography fans. An anonymous user called “SmokeTooMuch” tried to sell 10 000 BTC for $50 in March 2010; nobody bought.\n\nA few months later, in May 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10 000 BTC for two pizzas, the first BTC transaction to buy goods in the “real world”.\n\nBy July 2010, BTC price had increased from less than $0.01 to $0.08; still small denominations, but a 900% gain for early investors (and a great tip for the pizza man!)\n\nOver the next six months, BTC rose from 8 cents to hit parity at US$1, a milestone for the new currency to be taken seriously.\n\nOne year later, in July 2011, BTC was US$31, but by the time the Christmas decorations came out in December 2011, it had tumbled back down to just $2. This 95% drop was upsetting for those who came late to the party, but still a 100% gain for those who had been in for more than a year.\n\nThe $2 Christmas gifts, if held to April, were $13, a decent 600% gain for those who were holding, but not yet back to its previous year’s high.\n\nAnother year passed and in 2013, BTC went up 2000% from $13 to $266, back down to $50 and then up to $100. Day-traders would have felt sea-sick, but longer-term holders were OK.\n\nIn November 2013, BTC topped at US$1242, before crashing 50% in late December to $650. The price stayed low through April 2014, going down as low as $300 before a strong rally up to $500 in November 2014.\n\nMore lulls in 2015 at $200–300, and a spike later in the year as BTC climbed to $500 in December 2015, up to $700 in early January 2016.\n\nThroughout 2016, prices wavered between $400–600, before again climbing over $750 in late November.\n\nPrices peaked in January 2017 over US$1150; but within days the price dropped 30% in a single week.\n\nResting at $750 in January 2017, the price recovered to beat $1250 by April.\n\nMainstream adoption was not yet here, but a few people were talking.\n\nMay 2017 saw BTC rise from $1000 to $2000. By June it was $3000. By August BTC was $4000, and September $5000. October saw highs of $6000. In November the peak BTC price of $7000 climbed to $8000 within days.\n\nThe story broke through to the media. People were getting rich in an underground economy. The frenzy and FOMO saw the price rise from November’s $8000 to $17 900 by 15th December.\n\nPeople who had held for years were partying. People who jumped in one month earlier were celebrating (perhaps too early).\n\nFrom its high on Dec 15th 2017 of US$17 900, BTC shed 30% in a week, down to $14 000. Was this a sell-out or a buying opportunity?\n\nOops: from its low, BTC fell lower still, shedding another 50% to under $7000.\n\nIt seemed to many that the party was over and Bitcoin was dead. Longer-term investors knew that many Asians were selling out and pocketing their previous 6–12 months’ gains in anticipation of an even bigger party…\n\nChinese New Year is a celebration like Christmas and New Year’s Eve combined. Long-term stockmarket investors may also know the 7–10 year cycle of the “economic clock”.\n\nIn Australia, there is end of financial year “dividend stripping” in June, and the end of the bank year in September. Longer-term investors know that these patterns and drops represent good buying opportunities.\n\nWhen a market of almost 3 billion people in China, Singapore, Korea, Indonesia and India can sell down an investment by 50% within a month, that could seem scary to some.\n\nKnowing that a) their family is more important to them than the money, and b) the Asian investors possibly bought in sub-$1000 and sold out over $7000, then you will start to understand.\n\nBitcoin and cryptocurrency is a new concept. It does not carry the 200-year history charts of a US, Australian or European stock market, nor the 400-year history of the property market.\n\nNo one can definitively predict a crypto boom, crypto bust or crypto bubble with accuracy. We only have, at best, around a decade of past data, and nobody can accurately predict the future when exponential technology is involved.\n\nHowever, there are some patterns which can be seen to emerge.\n\nChinese New Year is just one of the patterns. Hold strong if you can, buy in the dips if possible, and do not overstretch yourself.\n\nOnly invest what you can afford to see rise up and down, or just don’t watch the waves. For some people, chasing peaks and troughs is a daily or hourly business, but it requires a lot of time, and a strong stomach.\n\nFor other people, focusing on the passing waves is inconsequential; instead, we can sit back on the cruise ship, focus on the distant horizon, and trust that our destination will be warm and sunny.\n\nSee you on the beaches\n\nJB\n\nBroader market:\nStocks\nThe popular tech stocks referred to as “FANG’ in the USA (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix & Google) shed a collective $90 Billion on the first Monday in February. What problem does it solve? How does it help people? If the whitepaper is filled with jargon, or if you cannot explain it simply, do NOT invest. \n\n \n\n3) I -- who are the early stage Investors?\n\nBitcoin had an anonymous creator, but its early investors were programmers, millionaires, and those \"in the know\". It has been widely reported what coins Richard Branson, Elon Musk, the Winkelvoss twins and others are investing into; look for people who are smart with money, and ignore celebrity endorsements by the likes of the Kardashians or Paris Hilton. \n\n \n\n4) N -- check the chatter on your Network\n\nWho is talking about this coin? Is it the talk of the Facebook community? Does it have a following on Twitter? YouTube? Is there a telegram community where you can speak to the developers?
