First I flop with the Koalas not being bears and then I am botted for copying for the Sydney Harbour Bridge….Well I am learning and eager to push on and survive as a Steemian.....Long way to go yet.  \n\nNow......Have you ever heard of an animal called the Platypus? This is a peculiar animal native to the land down under, Australia. The platypus actually belongs to the smallest order of mammals in the whole world. The only other member of this premier club is another Australian animal in the echidna (This will be for another post). \n\nThe Platypus is a mammal, the only mammal to lays eggs also known as menotremes. The Platypus is found in Eastern Australia and makes burrows in the banks of rivers and creeks. Semi aquatic in its nature, the Platypus inhabits extended range of weather conditions from cold highlands to Tropical Rainforests. The Platypus extends on the Eastern Coast of Australia from Tasmania, through to Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. The Platypus lives to an average age of seventeen years old. \n\nThe appearance of the platypus is unique to say the least. The otter footed (and webbed), beaver tailed and duck billed. It is a strange looking creature which makes it so beautiful. (FUN FACT: Did you know that when the Platypus was first discovered at around 1799 that it was judged as a hoax animal with body parts of different animals sewn together). \n\nThe Platypus is a carnivore and hunts for the smallest of prey such as insect larvae, tadpoles (baby frogs), fish and shellfish. The Platypus digs out the bed of the river and with its snout and uses its cheeks as pouches to carry prey to the surface where it feeds. The Platypus eats about twenty percent of its body weight each day which is spend by twelve hours hunting on average per day. The Platypus emit a low growl like sound when disturbed. The Platypus swim gracefully as they paddle with their front webbed feet and steer themselves with their hind legs and tail. \n\nThe male Platypus possesses a spur located at its hind foot that delivers enough venom (yes venom) to cause excruciating pain to an adult human but not deadly. The Platypus body temperature is around the 32 C (90 F) which is lower than the typical mammal. The female Platypus although possessing the spurs as well cannot deliver venom. \n\nThe Australian Platypus is a national symbol which resembles on the face of the twenty cent coin (pictured) in Australia. The Platypus is also the emblem of the state of New South Wales.  \nMating for the Platypus occurs between June and October. Females become sexually mature after two years and has a pair of ovaries with only the left one functional. The Platypus lays one – three eggs similar looking to those of reptiles after twenty-eight days inside the female and then once laid are incubating for a ten day period. Once the young have hatched it is up to the mother to care for them as the father leaves after mating for a year-long sleep. New hatchlings are born blind and with no hair at all (Naked like us).       "body": "Hey Yo!! From the Fella from Down Unda...\n\nI decided I am going to focus on Australia and it beautiful landmarks, animals, food, cultures and whatever more I can think off as I go. I have kind of flopped with my Koala post and my intro was just a car crash but I am determined and Australia is my country and Sydney is my home.\n\nThe Sydney Harbour Bridge, also affectionately known as the 'Coat hanger', was opened on March 19th 1932. It took six years of construction. Made of steel the bridge contains over 6 million hand driven rivets. The surface area that requires painting is equal to about the surface area of 60 sports fields. The Bridge has huge hinges to absorb the expansion caused by the hot Sydney sun. You will see them on either side of the bridge at the footings of the Pylons.\n\nYou can have a close hand look if ever in Sydney and I highly recommend it. It is a walking trip and recommended for the fit as it can get tiring and painful. It is a longish walk to get to the base of the Pylon and then there are 200 steps to the top of the Bridge to which the view is absolutely worth it. \nThe views and photo opportunities are fantastic. There is a great display on how the thing was built. It has a similar place in Sydney history to the Statue of Liberty in New York \n\nThe displaced peoples of Europe who came to Australia in the days of the grand ships can get very misty when you ask them what they felt when they saw this grand old arch on their arrival in Sydney from the aftermath of World War Two as they sailed up Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). The old Bridge has been replaced as \"the\" landmark of Sydney by the bold architecture of the Opera House.\nBut a grand old bridge it is, and one you will remember whenever you think of Sydney after your visit.\n\nWhen it opened it cost a car six pence to cross. A horse and rider was 3 pence. These days a return trip is $8.00 return with horses and riders banned, that's the changing in times. You can walk across free and you are allowed to bicycle in a special bike lane.\t\n\nSydney Harbour Bridge is the world's largest (but not longest) steel arch bridge, and, in its beautiful harbour location, has become a renowned international symbol of Australia. Its total length including approach spans is 1,149 metres and its arch span is 503 metres. The top of the arch is 134 metres above sea level and the clearance for shipping under the deck is a spacious 49 metres. The total steelwork weighs 52,800 tonnes, including 39,000 tonnes in the arch. The 49 metre wide deck makes Sydney Harbour Bridge the widest Long-spanning Bridge in the world.\n\nThe Bridge now carries eight vehicle lanes, two train lines, a footway and a cycleway.\n\nAfter inviting worldwide tenders in 1922, the New South Wales Government received twenty proposals from six companies and on 24 March 1924; the contract (for Australian 4,217,721 pounds 11 shillings and 10 pence!) was let to the English firm Dorman Long and Co of Middlesbrough. \n\nThe general design was prepared by Dr J.J.C Bradfield and officers of the NSW Department of Public Works, while the detailed design and crucial erection process were undertaken by the contractors consulting engineer Mr (later Sir) Ralph Freeman of Sir Douglas Fox and Partners and his associate Mr. G.C Imbault. Some other designs that where not chosen which I will attach a picture of.\n\nAs Chief Engineer of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Metropolitan Railway Construction from 1912, Dr Bradfield is regarded as the \"father\" of the Bridge as it was his vision, enthusiasm, engineering expertise and detailed supervision of all aspects of its construction which brought Sydney's long held dream into reality.\nThe contractors, under Director of Construction, Lawrence Ennis, set up two workshops at Milsons Point on the North Shore. Here, the steel (79% imported from England, 21% from Australian sources) was fabricated into girders etc.\n\nThe foundations for the four main bearings, which carry the full weight of the main span were dug to a depth of 12.2 metres and filled with special reinforced high-grade concrete laid in hexagonal formations.\n\nThe four impressive, decorative 89 metre high pylons are made of concrete, faced with granite, quarried near Moruya, where about 250 Australian, Scottish and Italian stonemasons and their families lived in a temporary settlement. Three ships were specifically built to carry the 18,000 cubic metres of cut, dressed and numbered granite blocks, 300km north to Sydney.\n\nAfter the approach spans were erected, work began on the main arch. Two half-arches were built out progressively from each shore, each held back by 128 cables anchored underground through U-shaped tunnels. Steel members were fabricated in the workshops, placed onto barges, towed into position on the harbour and lifted up by two 580 tonne electrically operated creeper cranes, which erected the half-arches before them as they travelled forward.\n\nThere was great excitement on 20 August 1930 after the arch was successfully joined at 10pm the night before. The steel decking was then hung from the arch and was all in place within nine months, being built from the centre outwards to save time moving the cranes. During the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from 1923 – 1932 amazingly (and sadly) only 16 men died from bridge related work, of those 16, only 2 fell to their deaths from the bridge. Vincent Kelly is the only known survivor of a fall from the bridge\n\nAs the project neared completion, the last of approximately six million Australian made rivets were driven through the deck on 21 January 1932. In February 1932 the Bridge was test loaded using up to 96 steam locomotives placed in various configurations.\nThe official opening day on Saturday 19 March 1932 was a momentous occasion, drawing remarkable crowds (estimated between 300,000 and one million people) to the city and around the harbour foreshores. The NSW Premier, the Hon. John T. Lang, officially declared the Bridge open. However, the Premier enlivened proceedings when Captain Francis De Groot of the para-military group, the New Guard, slashed the ribbon prematurely with his sword, prior to the official cutting. This incident caused both amusement and dismay on the day and has since become part of Australian folklore.\n\nThe opening celebrations included a vast cavalcade of decorated floats, marching groups and bands proceeding through the city streets and across the deck in a pageant of surprising size and quality, considering the economic depression.\n\nThe celebrations continued with a gun-salute, a procession of passenger ships under the Bridge, a 'venetian' carnival, a fly-past, fireworks, sports carnivals and exhibitions. After the pageant the public was allowed to walk across the deck…an event not repeated until the 50th anniversary of the Bridge in 1982.\n\t\nSome enthusiastic ones celebrated by unofficially climbing up the arch. \n\nThe Harbour Bridge is an essential artery feeding traffic to and from Sydney. The cranes had played a very important part in both the construction and ongoing maintenance of the bridge. During construction of the main arch between 1929 and 1931, two huge creeper cranes moved outwards, laying their tracksas they progressed. Behind them moved the four maintenance cranes, used initially by the riveting and painting gangs until they had to be dismantled to allow the creeper cranes to pass by and be removed in pieces near the pylons. From the Fella from Down Unda. \n\nI’ve been thinking and thinking for weeks and weeks and finally got a light bulb moment for my first real post besides the introduction and came up with Koalas….Yes Koalas. No not Koala Bears because they are just Koalas. \nAre Koalas bears? The whole world (except for Australia) do seem to think yes. Why? I ask this to many people and then they all reply similar to “They are so cuddly”. So being cuddly makes them bears? We all cuddle Grizzly Bears do we? We all cuddle Panda Bears do we? We all cuddle Polar Bears, Brown Bears, Black Bears and we cuddle Sloth Bears? Funny because most are scared and will not go near bears yet Koalas are bears because they are cute and cuddly. \n\nWe often hear these adorable Aussies called ‘koala bears’, but they are actually not bears at all. Koalas are marsupials, so they carry their young in a pouch, unlike bears which carry their young in the womb until they are well developed. The koala lives almost entirely on eucalypt leaves and they have a very low metabolic rate for a mammal, which is why they can sleep for up to 20 hours a day. Koalas vary in size and colour depending on where they live in Australia. Koalas found in the southern distributions (Southern New South Wales and Victoria) tend to be slightly larger and darker than those in the northern areas (Northern New South Wales and Queensland). This is likely to be related to the different temperatures and is a feature exhibited by many species whose distribution encompasses large climatic variations.\nThe most notable physical aspect of the Koala would have to be its big fluffy ears. Koalas have a great sense of hearing and an even better sense of smell. This is how they select which leaves are the best to eat. Their eyesight is not too good, and therefore detection of predators is generally by sound. They possess very strong forearms and extremely long, sharp claws for climbing.\nHabitat\nKoalas are found in eucalypt forests around the Eastern and South Eastern coast of Australia. The majority of wild Koalas are found on private property thus meaning there is no formal protection of this habitat. It is not known why some areas are absent of Koalas despite the presence of a food source, but it is possible that historically hunting has driven local populations to extinction.\n\nDiet\nKoalas eat eucalypt leaves but only from certain species. There are over 700 Eucalyptus species occurring within Australia, however the Koala will eat leaves from less than 50 of these species. Out of the palatable varieties, less than one dozen are staples. They prefer the 'tip' of the branches, which is the juiciest and softest leaves are and eat around 500g of leaf per day. Of course wild Koalas have to depend on whatever leaf is available and during the cooler months will often be forced to eat the more mature leaves.\nBreeding\nWhen a female Koala is ready to breed she will call out to a male by letting out a loud snorting bellow. The female gives birth 35 days after mating. When born, the joey weighs only half a gram and is the size of a kidney bean at about 2cm long. It stays attached to its mothers teat for 13 weeks, its eyes are open at 22 weeks and it gains teeth at 24 weeks. At around the 7 month age bracket, the joey will start taking short spells climbing on its mother's back and is usually independent at about 12 months old.\n\n\nSo there you have it.
