| title | Sense of Identity |
| body | Sense of identity through knowledge is not a static concept confined to identity relating only to our behavior and traits. Personal identity over time, can also be attributed with two approaches−the Psychological approach and animalism or the somatic approach. The Psychological approach to personal identity is that an individual is one who inherits his/her mental features, ability to think rationally, emotions, memories from his/her past experiences. The Psychological theory suggests that a person is the same individual as long as he/she is connected to the past in his/her present. For instance, if you want to know about how your normal behavior has changed over the years, you could simply ask your mother and if she reminisces your childhood memories, you can relate and decide whether you have changed or not. This approach is based on the fact that change in identity is an illusion – or rather a qualitative change. An alternate approach is animalism, which is from a Biological point of view. Animalism suggests that identity of self, alike all other animals, is a Biological property. This somatic approach says that a person is the same individual as long as he possesses his flesh; and as long as he is a living Biological organism. For instance, the proponents of the Somatic approach would say that if my brain were to be transplanted in yours, I would just be an empty headed thing. On the other hand, the Psychological approach would believe that although my brain is gone, I would retain my mental features. Both of these approaches from two areas of knowledge, in due fairness, lead us to the same belief of persistence of personal identity. |

"title": "Sense of Identity",
"body": "Sense of identity through knowledge is not a static concept confined to identity relating only to our behavior and traits. Both of these approaches from two areas of knowledge, in due fairness, lead us to the same belief of persistence of personal identity.",

| title | The Pattern |
| body | Just think about your existence; does it startle you? Pause for a moment and think about if you’re really passionate about what you’re doing. Does it all make sense to you? It strikes you again and again, keeping you away from mining the answer and lose whatever is left of you. Hunting for passion is often not the way to go; you might end up spending years doing that. Passion isn’t a static emotion. The more reasonable notion would be to dive into something and then shape your passion along the way. Dive into it, and find what it is made up of, what it means to you, and how it differs from the perspective of a third entity. Often caught up with the vicious cycle, and the dragging routine, I might not have the time to reflect and ask myself what I actually want. But when I do, I get lost in a stream of fragmented thoughts which synthesize really well but seldom flow or get satisfied. I try to cover them up with pleasing music, a hard work out or spurts of love but they just intensify the next time I come across something that triggers them. This is simply inevitable. I’m trying to find a pattern to all of this. Where it all started from nothing, and as entropy took its way – it organized and re-organized, and shuffled along the way into literature, multimedia, stories and all sorts. This is a small attempt to that flow of design. The explanation that one can expect is rather abstracted – as everything we know really is. One’s actions are the results of the consequences in past and the consequences are the results of one’s actions. We might agree to this conjecture and several others that give us a momentarily reason to believe and abstract away something stressful that occurred. We often play with words, beats and recreation to procreate sense and happiness in our day but often feel the challenges overpower them. We’re challenged every single day – with passion, emotion or without them. It doesn’t matter who we are – by profession or by choice – challenge and hardships are the fundamental ingredients that craft our way of life, and make us strive towards our actions. Challenges make us learn, fail and accomplish something we’re assigned in the first place. Challenge follows an attempt towards a solution. It follows a process that helps us identify what we’re dealing with and what tools would we need to resolve it. This is a streamlined process which we have mastered from the pre-history and has been engraved into our being with all these years of schooling and training. This process might lead us to the rather glorious path of research. We might or might not end up with a definite product or a solution – but we surely gain these experience points. 5 years, 10 years, 15 years of experience into a field can lead us places and it’s all about these numbers which lead to more changing numbers. Is this all a game? Maybe. Maybe not. It’s about your perspective. We’re leveling up with these challenges and we’re getting closer to an ideal world which is always going to get even more modernized than today.And if this startles you, you might not be the only one. You might not think the same exact way as anyone else, but if you’re really figuring out this pattern, this intelligent design, you might be just another player. Keep playing, and limit questioning yourself. |

| title | Voluntourism – Is it the Service of the Future for College Students? |
| body | Volunteer tourism or voluntourism has seen tremendous growth in the recent years. Young volunteers travel abroad to serve communities and make a difference. They serve orphanages, empower communities, tutor kids, and raise funds to build schools, to name a few. Voluntourists are gifted with an opportunity to travel as well as show their kindness to help underprivileged populations while developing their own character and awareness. Although critics argue that voluntourism is more detrimental than helpful to the communities and is more focused toward volunteers, it can be beneficial if done correctly and monitored appropriately. Most of the tourists are young people –college students– who become part of this constructive trend to benefit the less fortunate communities, enhance their own intercultural exposure and awareness, and help protect the natural environment –and this is the reason why they should engage in voluntourism programs. Young participants who engage in voluntourism create a positive impact on the local communities being served. Voluntourism programs connect the participants to the communities that are in need. Judith Lopez, director of one of the orphanage centers, talks about how the kids in the institution– some abandoned and others underprivileged – are getting the affection and reassurance they need from the voluntourists who visit the facility (Wertheimer, 2014). She talks about how the kids are enthusiastic to spend their time with the volunteers. These passionate students, hailing from reputed American universities, spend their breaks at such facilities to build libraries, tutor kids, grow plantations, and take up several leadership positions to make the community and its members who warmly welcome the students, thrive (Ruiz, 2013 and Wertheimer, 2014). Moreover, with the aid of tourism firms, voluntourists are able to empower the community members by leveraging their skills and providing employment opportunities to them. For instance, the Planeterra foundation is investing in empowering the Ccaccaccollo community in Peru by organizing weaving workshops for the women, which allows them to support their families by selling these textiles to the tourists and also teaching them some of the weaving skills (Poon Tip, 2009). Overall, by touching every part of the community and empowering them, young voluntourists are giving communities their share of gratification. Service follows enlightenment. While giving back to the local communities abroad, college students are essentially developing themselves on an interpersonal level. The nature of voluntourism upholds the young volunteers’ ability to interact with cultural diversity, increases their awareness about problems, and augments their social capital – even 2-3 years after the international service (Lough et. al, 2014) .This suggests that the impact of short-term trips can have a sustainable impact on the volunteers. Additionally, international service is a great way for students to build their resume and acquire potential interpersonal skills. Nanny McGehee, professor of hospitality and tourism at Virginia Tech, talks in an interview about how voluntourism transforms the volunteers – helping them pick up great resume building skills as well as exposing them to the bigger issues (Wertheimer, 2014). During this process, the volunteers also acquire a better understanding of the lives of the underprivileged which plays a key role in helping them become more emotionally aware, attain a high level of civil mind, and pave the path to envision solutions for big problems such as poverty, and lack of other necessities. (Stupart, 2013 and Sujarittanonta, 2014). Overall, voluntourism is a win-win for all the stakeholders involved and develops the student volunteers on an interpersonal level. In addition to the core impacts to the stakeholders involved in voluntourism, voluntourists also take the credit for preserving the natural environment of the places they tour and volunteer. With constant efforts to preserve or leverage the cultural heritage present in the communities, and merging volunteer work with eco-tourism, these programs are essentially augmenting the economic value of the tourist place. For instance, WARF (Wild Animal Rescue Foundation) has integrated eco-tourism with voluntourism in Thailand in order conserve the wildlife and other natural resources (Sujarittanonta, 2014). College students play a pivotal role in this venture to take care of some of the wild animals, and be responsible for the ecological health of the realm. The owner of FMA Techniek, Henk Arissen, says that this is possible due to the educated volunteers who are dedicated and willing to learn with a constructive mindset (Sujarittanonta, 2014). Hence, conservation of the environment is a major part of volunteers’ efforts in benefiting all stakeholders involved. Critics of voluntourism argue that such short trips might actually do more harm than good to the community. Volunteers often develop bonds with the communities which might cause the communities to be more dependent and might actually damage some of them –especially kids – psychologically after the volunteers leave (Richter, 2010). In addition, it might seem that these voluntourism programs might be focused more towards the student volunteers than the communities. According to Zakaria (2014), voluntourism puts too much focus on the volunteers and the notion of community service or community gaining is doubtful under such cases. While this view is justifiable, most of these are short-term trips partially solve this by keeping the bonding time between volunteers and the community short, as well as focusing more on ‘service’(‘The Agenda with Steve Paikin, 2011). On the same note, the emotionally rewarding experience which the communities receive during that period outweighs the negative consequences of the aftermath (Stupart, 2013). With certain precautions in mind, voluntourism can be a healthy and rewarding experience. It important to choose the right kind of organization to travel with and do some background research whether the organization is community-centric, transparent, profit or non-profit as that makes a difference in the motivation levels for such firms. (Wertheimer, 2014 and ‘The Agenda with Steve Paikin’, 2011). Additionally, optimizing the projects and monitoring them to avoid overloading of volunteers can also potentially assure a positive experience for both volunteers and the communities (Poon Tip, 2009). Overall these measures would minimize the harms of voluntourism to the communities. To conclude, short-term voluntourism programs have a great impact on the remote places in third-word countries, a marked influence on college student’s interpersonal growth and social capital, and all of this together with maintaining the natural environment of the place. An increasing sense of purpose in these communities thereafter is likely to promote enriched quality voluntourism programs and encourage volunteers. The flaws can be refined, and service can be done in the right way, however, it is not practical to abstain young people from serving people for a right cause and giving them a lifetime experience of learning and service. |

| body | There will be times when the world won’t make much sense to you. You’ll rather feel inferior, powerless, and pushed to follow whats next. You might feel you’re engaging in something that is either very time consuming or uninteresting, but as long as you keep up with it, it might be worth it after all. Remember high school ? you were confident you’ll be game changer and be able to live your dreams in no time. You were bound by the same schooling system like everyone else but you had faith in yourself. This faith and confidence was partly governed by your enthusiasm and dedication to go above and beyond everything. For me, it was majorly due to the hope in the eyes of my parents, teachers, peers, and the thirst to move on to a better next – although I had little idea of what I’ll end up doing in college. Our stories are maybe similar, maybe not, but we all went through similar phases in order to land to the next phase of life – formal and higher education. Between this transition, its common to take the so called standardized tests that test your IQ and verbal/reading skills. After that, you’re just a number on the paper. And this shall also reflect onto bigger things. We live in a world where numbers reflect the true potential of entities – be it an individual or business. I’m not so fond of that. If X got 1600s on the SAT, how would you perceive X ? Is he just a number ? The depth of humanity and individuality is much more than a number that might constantly vary over time. Anyway, it doesn’t matter what your views are on this, you had to take the standardized tests to apply to institutions. And then we all somehow manage to get admitted at a decent place – which might not be on our so called ‘dream league’ list. 4-6 more years of formal education that is awaiting. This is the time you really grow, establish your connections, grow your network, be good at the field you are inclined towards. More than the content, it all boils down to whether you can figure out a problem using the tools that you’re presented with in order to come to a measurable solution/impact. This is all fine. Now, lets talk about what I started the article with. There will be times when the world doesn’t make much sense, you feel defeated, lack motivation, and stress out. These are the times you won’t prolly forget. Growth isn’t justified by just pleasant or normal experiences which don’t move you enough, rather amplified by failures and the determination to pick yourself up again. Don’t just keep cutting trees day by day and realize you’re losing your strength, maybe pause for a while and sharpen your axe. This is exactly what you should do to move on from such feelings. Otherwise, you will just get lost in a puddle of thoughts that won’t make you feel great about anything surrounding you – getting closer to depression. I know life becomes harder after graduation – school is structured and rather ‘easy’. Life is NP Complete – there’s no efficient way to get better. You just constantly have to re-invent yourself, try different tactics when one doesn’t work and keep moving – after all a bad plan is better than no plan. But, don’t get stuck in something that doesn’t make you feel valued anymore – break out from it, take risks and venture out till you find something that syncs with your passion. Every person in this world, no matter what his number is on the paper, adds a potential value to the whole of humanity. You truly have to find what value you’d like to add. Do it with a passion, and you won’t feel lost anymore. Go do it now ! |
