For example, countries such as Russia, China, Venezuela, and Iran have all explored using digital currency to circumvent United States sanctions, which puts the US government at risk of losing its global authority.

International politics and economics are a very delicate issue, and often sanctions are used in place of military boots on the ground, arguably making the world a safer place.

The micro risks enabled by cryptocurrency weigh heavily in aggregate. One of the most attractive features of Bitcoin and other digital assets is that one can send anywhere between a few pennies-worth to billions of dollars of Bitcoin anywhere in the world at any time for a negligible fee (currently around $0.04 to $0.20 depending on the urgency.)

However, in the hands of malicious parties, this could be very dangerous. The illicit activities inherently supported by a global decentralized currency run the gamut: terrorist funding, selling and buying illegal drugs, ordering assassinations, dodging taxes, laundering money, and so on.

Can Bitcoin Even Be Regulated?

Before diving deeper, it’s worth asking whether Bitcoin can be regulated in the first place.

The cryptocurrency was built with the primary purpose of being decentralized and distributed– two very important qualities that could make or break Bitcoin’s regulation.

By being decentralized, Bitcoin doesn’t have a single controlling entity. The control of Bitcoin is shared among several independent entities all over the world, making it nearly impossible for a single entity to wrangle full control over the network and manipulate it as they please.

By being distributed, Bitcoin exists at many different locations at the same time. This makes it very difficult for a single regulatory power to enforce its will across borders. This means that a government or other third party can’t technically raid an office and shut anything down.

That being said, there are several chokepoints that could severely hinder Bitcoin’s adoption and use.

1. Targeting centralized entities: exchanges and wallets

A logical first move is to regulate the fiat onramps (exchanges) , which the United States government has finally been getting around to. In cryptocurrency’s nascent years, cryptocurrency exchanges didn’t require much input or approval from regulatory authorities to run. However, the government started stepping in when cryptocurrency starting hitting the mainstream.

The SEC, FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network), and CFTChave all played a role in pushing Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policies across all exchanges operating within U.S borders.

Cryptocurrency exchanges have no options but to adhere to whatever the U.S. government wants. The vast majority of cryptocurrency users rely on some cryptocurrency exchange to utilize their cryptocurrency, so they will automatically bend to exchange-imposed regulation.

Regulators might not be able to shut down the underlying technology that powers Bitcoin, but they can completely wreck the user experience for the great majority of cryptocurrency users, which serves as enough of an impediment to diminish the use of cryptocurrency for most.

2. Targeting users.

The government can also target individual cryptocurrency users. Contrary to popular opinion, Bitcoin (and even some privacy coins) aren’t anonymous. An argument can be made that Bitcoin is even easier to track than fiat because of its public, transparent ledger.

Combined with every cryptocurrency exchange’s willingness to work with U.S. authorities, a federal task force could easily track money sent and received from certain addresses and pinpoint the actual individual with it. Companies such as Elliptic and Chainalysis have already created solid partnerships with law enforcement in many countries to track down illicit cryptocurrency uses and reveals the identities behind the transactions.

Beyond that, we dive into the dark web and more professional illicit cryptocurrency usage. Although trickier, the government likely has enough cyber firepower to snipe out the majority of cryptocurrency-related cybercrime. In fact, coin mixers (cryptoMixer.io), coin swap services (ShapeShift) and P2P bitcoin transactions (localbitcoins.com) have been investigated for several years now and most of them have had to add KYC and adhere to strict AML laws.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, it’s going to take a lot to enforce any sort of significant global regulation on Bitcoin, with the most important factor being a centralization and consensus of opinion. The majority of the U.S. regulatory alphabet agencies fall into the same camp of “protect the good guys, stop the bad guys”, but there isn’t really a single individual piece of guidance to follow. Currently, cryptocurrencies are regulated in the US by several institutions: CFTC, SEC, IRS, making it difficult to create overarching regulatory guidelines.

In short, yes– Bitcoin can be regulated. In fact, its regulation has already started with the fiat onramps and adherence to strict KYC & AML laws. While in countries such as Ecuador, Bolivia, Egypt and Morocco Bitcoin ownership is illegal, in the US, it would take some bending of the moral fabric of the Constitution in order for cryptocurrency ownership rights to be infringed.

However, it cannot be shut down. There are still ways to buy, sell, and trade Bitcoin P2P, without a centralized exchange. It would take an enormous effort by any government to completely uproot something as decentralized as Bitcoin, but that future seems more dystopian than tangible.

For example, countries such as Russia, China, Venezuela, and Iran have all explored using digital currency to circumvent United States sanctions, which puts the US government at risk of losing its global authority.
\n
\n
\n
\n
International politics and economics are a very delicate issue, and often sanctions are used in place of military boots on the ground, arguably making the world a safer place.
\n
The micro risks enabled by cryptocurrency weigh heavily in aggregate. One of the most attractive features of Bitcoin and other digital assets is that one can send anywhere between a few pennies-worth to billions of dollars of Bitcoin anywhere in the world at any time for a negligible fee (currently around $0.04 to $0.20 depending on the urgency.)
\n
However, in the hands of malicious parties, this could be very dangerous. The illicit activities inherently supported by a global decentralized currency run the gamut: terrorist funding, selling and buying illegal drugs, ordering assassinations, dodging taxes, laundering money, and so on.
\n
Can Bitcoin Even Be Regulated?
\n
Before diving deeper, it’s worth asking whether Bitcoin can be regulated in the first place.
\n
The cryptocurrency was built with the primary purpose of being decentralized and distributed– two very important qualities that could make or break Bitcoin’s regulation.
\n
By being decentralized, Bitcoin doesn’t have a single controlling entity. The control of Bitcoin is shared among several independent entities all over the world, making it nearly impossible for a single entity to wrangle full control over the network and manipulate it as they please.
\n
\n
\n
\n
By being distributed, Bitcoin exists at many different locations at the same time. This makes it very difficult for a single regulatory power to enforce its will across borders. This means that a government or other third party can’t technically raid an office and shut anything down.
\n
That being said, there are several chokepoints that could severely hinder Bitcoin’s adoption and use.
\n

\n
1. Targeting centralized entities: exchanges and wallets
\n
A logical first move is to regulate the fiat onramps (exchanges) , which the United States government has finally been getting around to. In cryptocurrency’s nascent years, cryptocurrency exchanges didn’t require much input or approval from regulatory authorities to run. However, the government started stepping in when cryptocurrency starting hitting the mainstream.
\n
The SEC, FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network), and CFTChave all played a role in pushing Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policies across all exchanges operating within U.S borders.
\n
Cryptocurrency exchanges have no options but to adhere to whatever the U.S. government wants. The vast majority of cryptocurrency users rely on some cryptocurrency exchange to utilize their cryptocurrency, so they will automatically bend to exchange-imposed regulation.
\n
Regulators might not be able to shut down the underlying technology that powers Bitcoin, but they can completely wreck the user experience for the great majority of cryptocurrency users, which serves as enough of an impediment to diminish the use of cryptocurrency for most.
\n

\n
2. Targeting users.
\n
The government can also target individual cryptocurrency users. Contrary to popular opinion, Bitcoin (and even some privacy coins) aren’t anonymous. An argument can be made that Bitcoin is even easier to track than fiat because of its public, transparent ledger.
\n
Combined with every cryptocurrency exchange’s willingness to work with U.S. authorities, a federal task force could easily track money sent and received from certain addresses and pinpoint the actual individual with it. Companies such as Elliptic and Chainalysis have already created solid partnerships with law enforcement in many countries to track down illicit cryptocurrency uses and reveals the identities behind the transactions.
\n
Beyond that, we dive into the dark web and more professional illicit cryptocurrency usage. Although trickier, the government likely has enough cyber firepower to snipe out the majority of cryptocurrency-related cybercrime. In fact, coin mixers (cryptoMixer.io), coin swap services (ShapeShift) and P2P bitcoin transactions (localbitcoins.com) have been investigated for several years now and most of them have had to add KYC and adhere to strict AML laws.
\n
Final Thoughts
\n
Ultimately, it’s going to take a lot to enforce any sort of significant global regulation on Bitcoin, with the most important factor being a centralization and consensus of opinion. The majority of the U.S. regulatory alphabet agencies fall into the same camp of “protect the good guys, stop the bad guys”, but there isn’t really a single individual piece of guidance to follow. body
https://cryptoroi.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Featured-image.png

In the crazy low interest rate world of today, where bonds yield negative interest rates, governments spend massive deficits globally, and Quantitative Easing(QE) is always just around the corner to bailout bad risks. Any rational person would see this house of cards is about to fall, so if you are rational what is your hedge?

Hard assets is the right answer, but what hard assets? Real estate prices are largely dependent on mortgages which have been cheap and bountiful, driving market prices back to housing crisis era levels. So that leaves 2 primary hard assets, precious metals (gold) or cryptocurrencies.

Historically speaking the answer is obvious, gold.

Gold is the most stable valuable asset in the world, historically. But, the world has changed, I bet you couldn’t even get a millenial to buy gold at half price, they have hardly even used cash. And whether you like it or not, young people are set to inherit this earth, and they have been using digital money all of their lives. Cryptocurrency, is just a hard asset gold like form of digital money.

So the argument comes down to investing in the past or the future?

The Past: Gold

Gold, as we all know, is a very rare metal, so there’s also just a very limited supply. It also costs a lot of resources to obtain and mine. Mining gold will produce a shiny metal, an element that can’t be contaminated. Therefore making it very valuable last longer than other metals. Making it very ideal to store wealth, as we have throughout history.

Commodity

Gold like cryptocurrency is 90% speculative. If gold was priced only for its value as a commodity for jewelry, computers, and other applications the price would be far, far lower than it is today. However, the fact that gold is still used as a commodity even though the price is speculative shows its has staying value as a shiny non-corroding metal.

Gold vs Cryptocurrency

Stability, gold has been a much more stable asset to bet on throughout the ages. It had thousands of years to stabilize and maintain its value while cryptocurrencies is still a birthing technology giving it the volatility that it has. Gold has established its credibility as an investment. The current market cap of gold for reference is around $7T (compared to Cryptocurrencies $250B)

Cryptocurrencies are still very new to the market, so it carries a lot of risk. Old people tend to go for gold or stable assets and not otherwise because they can’t afford to lose their holdings as they won’t be able to recover from it.

Young people can bet on assets with higher risks for higher rewards because if they lose everything, they still have a long time to recover and can still go back and start over. Also cryptocurrency is just more useful to young people. They all know how to use the internet, shop online, use their smartphones for everything. A digital asset easily fits into their life.

The Future: Cryptocurrencies

If you are reading this you probably have a general idea what cryptocurrencies are and generally how they work. Cryptocurrencies have become very popular despite the huge price swings due to market fluctuations and perhaps manipulation. It has the potential to become the new global digital money. There are thousands of different currencies today, but this all started from Bitcoin back in 2009.

Although it’s been 10 years since Bitcoin started, it’s still at its early stages. That being the case, its price/value can still be easily affected by the usual volume of trades. Both selling and buying BTC affects its value. Bitcoin cannot simply be created out of thin air and has a limited supply of 21 Million, making it economically a much better sound finite money. Distributed over time in a parabola approaching 100%.

What people Miss: Bitcoin is a Commodity

And here is your reward for reading to the end of the article. While the rest of the world treats Bitcoin as a 100% speculative asset with little value besides as a money, like gold’s use as a commodity at any price, Bitcoin also has an ace up its sleeve. Data.

Data is the most valuable asset in the world today. It’s the information age, and nearly all information is online and accessible to the whole world at any moment. But, the way the current internet works all of that data is free, and like anything free it suffers the tragedy of the commons. When data is free, you are going to get way too much of it and lots of low quality data, because its very low cost.

So the internet is littered with advertisements, spam, scams, and you name it. Bitcoin, is an unalterable financial storage layer for the internet. That is its commodity. Bitcoin is information, just like money is information. $100 bill isn’t worth anything to you on a hiking trip, but when you interact with other people, that $100 piece of paper is information of value you (or someone else who gave it to you) delivered to another person at another time.

Bitcoin is a database of this information, and contrary to popular opinion the technology does scale and will store, and make valuable the whole internet worth of data at scale.

So the answer is easy, which is more valuable. Shiny rock old people like, or the internet.

Cryptocurrency, is just a hard asset gold like form of digital money.
\n

\n
So the argument comes down to investing in the past or the future?
\n

\n
The Past: Gold
\n
Gold, as we all know, is a very rare metal, so there’s also just a very limited supply. It also costs a lot of resources to obtain and mine. Mining gold will produce a shiny metal, an element that can’t be contaminated. Therefore making it very valuable last longer than other metals. Making it very ideal to store wealth, as we have throughout history.
\n
Commodity
\n
Gold like cryptocurrency is 90% speculative. If gold was priced only for its value as a commodity for jewelry, computers, and other applications the price would be far, far lower than it is today. However, the fact that gold is still used as a commodity even though the price is speculative shows its has staying value as a shiny non-corroding metal.
\n

\n
Gold vs Cryptocurrency
\n
Stability, gold has been a much more stable asset to bet on throughout the ages. It had thousands of years to stabilize and maintain its value while cryptocurrencies is still a birthing technology giving it the volatility that it has. Gold has established its credibility as an investment. The current market cap of gold for reference is around $7T (compared to Cryptocurrencies $250B)
\n

\n
Cryptocurrencies are still very new to the market, so it carries a lot of risk. Old people tend to go for gold or stable assets and not otherwise because they can’t afford to lose their holdings as they won’t be able to recover from it.
\n
Young people can bet on assets with higher risks for higher rewards because if they lose everything, they still have a long time to recover and can still go back and start over. Also cryptocurrency is just more useful to young people. They all know how to use the internet, shop online, use their smartphones for everything. A digital asset easily fits into their life.
\n
The Future: Cryptocurrencies
\n
If you are reading this you probably have a general idea what cryptocurrencies are and generally how they work. Cryptocurrencies have become very popular despite the huge price swings due to market fluctuations and perhaps manipulation. It has the potential to become the new global digital money. There are thousands of different currencies today, but this all started from Bitcoin back in 2009.
\n
Although it’s been 10 years since Bitcoin started, it’s still at its early stages. That being the case, its price/value can still be easily affected by the usual volume of trades. Both selling and buying BTC affects its value. Bitcoin cannot simply be created out of thin air and has a limited supply of 21 Million, making it economically a much better sound finite money. Distributed over time in a parabola approaching 100%.
\n
What people Miss: Bitcoin is a Commodity
\n
And here is your reward for reading to the end of the article. While the rest of the world treats Bitcoin as a 100% speculative asset with little value besides as a money, like gold’s use as a commodity at any price, Bitcoin also has an ace up its sleeve. Data.
\n
Data is the most valuable asset in the world today. It’s the information age, and nearly all information is online and accessible to the whole world at any moment. But, the way the current internet works all of that data is free, and like anything free it suffers the tragedy of the commons. When data is free, you are going to get way too much of it and lots of low quality data, because its very low cost.
\n
So the internet is littered with advertisements, spam, scams, and you name it. Bitcoin, is an unalterable financial storage layer for the internet. That is its commodity. Bitcoin is information, just like money is information. $100 bill isn’t worth anything to you on a hiking trip, but when you interact with other people, that $100 piece of paper is information of value you (or someone else who gave it to you) delivered to another person at another time.
\n
Bitcoin is a database of this information, and contrary to popular opinion the technology does scale and will store, and make valuable the whole internet worth of data at scale.
\n
So the answer is easy, which is more valuable. Shiny rock old people like, or the internet.
\n

\n

\n

\n",

body

Bitcoin (BTC) has been all the rage lately, but if you have used it or researched it, the logical conclusion is that, “Bitcoin is overvalued relative to other useful blockchains”.

Few facts about Bitcoin:

Slow and costly to send transactions

Not much useful development

Volatile

LN (Lightning Network) is not helping with transaction congestion

segwit + 1MB block cap (4MB but it never hardly gets past 1.3MB) have proven ineffective in periods of high volatility

Besides slow, expensive, and overly secure transactions, I have yet to see another useful Bitcoin service. But, defying all of these information, Bitcoin’s market cap continues to rise and dominate!!

So, now, more than ever, is the time to sell overvalued BTC into undervalued useful altcoins such as ETH, BCH, EOS, MKR, and arguably a few other good ones. And a long term set interest rate Bitcoin loan is one of the safest tools to make this trade.

How to Short BTC / Altcoins safely

A famous quote:

“Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain liquid”– John Maynard Keynes

Keeping the above quote in mind, it’s important to take this trade on with ample caution. And, in order to be conservative and cautious, it’s important to find the right tools for the trade.

Below is a comparison of the tools available for this task. `

Margin lending, High Volume but Risky way

The most popular and high volume way to do this trade would be margin lending. The process for doing this trade is pretty simple.

Deposit collateral
Deposit in the form of USDT, BTC, or other supported altcoins into a margin lending exchange.

Then short sell BTC on margin.
This amounts to borrowing BTC against your collateral, than selling that BTC for another asset (likely USD). If your short is a success you can buy back the BTC you borrowed at a lower price later and keep the profits.

While margin lending is the most liquid and possibly the easiest way to short BTC, there are some drawbacks…

Margin Call.
First is the risk of getting margin called and selling the bottom. This happens if your collateral falls below a certain threshold where you no longer have sufficient collateral, so it’s sold off in a market order. With cryptocurrencies history of “flash crashes” this should be a significant concern when trading on margin.

Unpredictable Funding Rates.
Another downfall of margin lending is unpredictable funding rates. This is less of a concern, but if you are not a day trader and trading a long term trend, this can add up quickly and become quite expensive.

During periods of high volatility or some sort of exchange risk, funding rates have gone up as high as 5%/day or (1852% APR). This of course was an exception, but even 100% APR for a few days can quickly make a decent trade unprofitable.

Bitcoin Loans, a Safer Alternative
Arguably the safest way to make a long term short position on Bitcoin is with a Bitcoin loan. There are a few different places you can get a Bitcoin loan. Some are centralized, and some new ones are relatively decentralized like WBTC loans using Ethereum network. The oldest type of Bitcoin loan is P2P. Due to Bitcoin’s nature as a P2P money, when it comes to getting a Bitcoin loan, P2P Bitcoin banking is a natural fit. Users keep control of their BTC and don’t turn it over to a banker like traditional banking models.

Btcpop.co is the oldest P2P cryptocurrency lending platform. Btcpop has a P2P market where depositors choose on a case by case basis whether the risk/reward proposal is sufficient to fund your loan.

Set your own terms
The main benefit of taking out a Bitcoin loan to short Bitcoin is the ability to have stable set terms and a predictable interest rate. For example, if you are trading the long term BTC/ETH pair and have a time preference of years instead of weeks or months for the trade. Almost every investor would advise on not holding a margin position for longer than days/weeks. But, a Bitcoin loan is different and can be held safely a lot longer.

Short BTC to go Long (Buy) Other Coins

Bitcoin loans offer a method of shorting the Bitcoin price against other assets. For example, if you are very bullish on EOS and Bearish on BTC you can satisfy both investments with one trade.

Take out a Bitcoin loan.

Use that Bitcoin to buy EOS in the common EOS/BTC trading pair.

At the time of writing EOS/BTC price is .00044 BTC which is historically low

2 times EOS has rallied up to around .0011 BTC or higher from around the .00044 BTC price, which is a potential 250%+ gain. If this fits your risk reward tolerance and your willing to wait months for a larger cycle like this a multiple month. Bitcoin loan would be a lot safer than margin lending for that length of time.

This can of course be done for nearly any other cryptocurrency as BTC is a base trading pair for almost all of them. BCH, ETH, MKR, you name it they are all approaching or at historic lows relative to BTC.

Short BTC by Selling it to Fiat/Stablecoins

If you think the BTC price is too high relative to the USD, you can take a loan for BTC, withdraw the BTC to sell for USD on another exchange, and then buy back the BTC later (hopefully at a lower price) to make your loan payments.

This is slightly riskier in the sense that USD is completely uncorrelated with BTC unlike altcoins. And History has shown that BTC/USD moves in massive volatile cycles and if you get on the wrong side of one, it could get expensive very quickly.

However, there are times like back when BTC was $20k that shorting BTC regardless of the risks can be very profitable. And if you don’t want to be margin called, a Bitcoin loan could be the safter long term trade option for you.

A BTC loan is beneficial in the long term trade because your funds won’t be liquidated so long as you keep up on your payments. For example if you shorted BTC at 15k in December 2017 on margin, you would have likely gotten liquidated when BTC shot up to 20k.

However, if you took a Bitcoin loan, you would have only had to make a couple payments while your trade was underwater, and then by January of 2018 your trade would have been back in profit and you never risked getting liquidated during this period..

Derivative trading, Most Risky

The last way to short BTC, and one of the most popular is to do it on a derivative platform such as Bitmex or Deribit. While these platforms are the most liquid place to trade and you can move massive volumes through them, they do hold unseen risk as there is no actual BTC being traded.

Practice Caution

None of the information above constitutes financial advice.
Trading on leverage (taking out loans) especially with cryptocurrency is a very risky endeavor. While the profits can be enormous, the losses can be severe and instant.

This article is for informational purposes to share Bitcoin loans as a potentially safer alternative to getting (Rekt) or liquidated margin trading on an exchange.

And, in order to be conservative and cautious, it’s important to find the right tools for the trade.
\n
Below is a comparison of the tools available for this task. `
\n
Margin lending, High Volume but Risky way
\n
The most popular and high volume way to do this trade would be margin lending. The process for doing this trade is pretty simple.
\n
\n
Deposit collateral
Deposit in the form of USDT, BTC, or other supported altcoins into a margin lending exchange.
\n
Then short sell BTC on margin.
This amounts to borrowing BTC against your collateral, than selling that BTC for another asset (likely USD). If your short is a success you can buy back the BTC you borrowed at a lower price later and keep the profits.
\n
\n

\n
While margin lending is the most liquid and possibly the easiest way to short BTC, there are some drawbacks…
\n
\n
Margin Call.
First is the risk of getting margin called and selling the bottom. This happens if your collateral falls below a certain threshold where you no longer have sufficient collateral, so it’s sold off in a market order. With cryptocurrencies history of “flash crashes” this should be a significant concern when trading on margin.

\n
Unpredictable Funding Rates.
Another downfall of margin lending is unpredictable funding rates. This is less of a concern, but if you are not a day trader and trading a long term trend, this can add up quickly and become quite expensive.

During periods of high volatility or some sort of exchange risk, funding rates have gone up as high as 5%/day or (1852% APR). This of course was an exception, but even 100% APR for a few days can quickly make a decent trade unprofitable.
\n
\n
\n

\n
\n

\n
Set your own terms
The main benefit of taking out a Bitcoin loan to short Bitcoin is the ability to have stable set terms and a predictable interest rate. For example, if you are trading the long term BTC/ETH pair and have a time preference of years instead of weeks or months for the trade. Almost every investor would advise on not holding a margin position for longer than days/weeks. But, a Bitcoin loan is different and can be held safely a lot longer.
\n
\n

\n
Short BTC to go Long (Buy) Other Coins
\n
Bitcoin loans offer a method of shorting the Bitcoin price against other assets. For example, if you are very bullish on EOS and Bearish on BTC you can satisfy both investments with one trade.
\n
\n
Take out a Bitcoin loan.
\n
Use that Bitcoin to buy EOS in the common EOS/BTC trading pair.
\n
\n
At the time of writing EOS/BTC price is .00044 BTC which is historically low
\n

\n
2 times EOS has rallied up to around .0011 BTC or higher from around the .00044 BTC price, which is a potential 250%+ gain. If this fits your risk reward tolerance and your willing to wait months for a larger cycle like this a multiple month. Bitcoin loan would be a lot safer than margin lending for that length of time.
\n
This can of course be done for nearly any other cryptocurrency as BTC is a base trading pair for almost all of them. BCH, ETH, MKR, you name it they are all approaching or at historic lows relative to BTC.
\n
\n
Short BTC by Selling it to Fiat/Stablecoins
\n
If you think the BTC price is too high relative to the USD, you can take a loan for BTC, withdraw the BTC to sell for USD on another exchange, and then buy back the BTC later (hopefully at a lower price) to make your loan payments.
\n
This is slightly riskier in the sense that USD is completely uncorrelated with BTC unlike altcoins. And History has shown that BTC/USD moves in massive volatile cycles and if you get on the wrong side of one, it could get expensive very quickly.
\n
However, there are times like back when BTC was $20k that shorting BTC regardless of the risks can be very profitable. And if you don’t want to be margin called, a Bitcoin loan could be the safter long term trade option for you.
\n

\n
A BTC loan is beneficial in the long term trade because your funds won’t be liquidated so long as you keep up on your payments. For example if you shorted BTC at 15k in December 2017 on margin, you would have likely gotten liquidated when BTC shot up to 20k.
\n
However, if you took a Bitcoin loan, you would have only had to make a couple payments while your trade was underwater, and then by January of 2018 your trade would have been back in profit and you never risked getting liquidated during this period..
\n
\n
Derivative trading, Most Risky
\n
The last way to short BTC, and one of the most popular is to do it on a derivative platform such as Bitmex or Deribit. While these platforms are the most liquid place to trade and you can move massive volumes through them, they do hold unseen risk as there is no actual BTC being traded.
\n
\n

\n
Practice Caution
\n
None of the information above constitutes financial advice.
Trading on leverage (taking out loans) especially with cryptocurrency is a very risky endeavor. While the profits can be enormous, the losses can be severe and instant.

\n
This article is for informational purposes to share Bitcoin loans as a potentially safer alternative to getting (Rekt) or liquidated margin trading on an exchange.
",

body

Trading stablecoins is one of the lowest risk ways to earn money in cryptocurrency. During high volatility you can earn upwards of 30% APR just trading stablecoins. This may not seem like that much when cryptocurrencies can move that much in a day, but with stablecoins your downside risk is much much lower so your risk/reward ratio is very attractive.

How it works

The idea is very simple.

Sell $1 for more than $1.
Buy $1 for less than $1.

This may seem too simple, but premiums and discounts on stablecoins exist all around the cryptocurrency world. I have bought $1 stablecoin for as little as $.95 and sold it for as much $1.05. That is 10% on simply trading $1.

One nuance of this type of trading is that if you want to do it profitably and make it worth your time you will probably need to have quite a few USD to start.

1% of $100 is only $1.
1% of $10,000 is $100.

A $1 trade is probably not worth your time or fees.
A $100 on the other hand is a good day's work.

What is a stablecoin

Stablecoins have become hugely popular in the cryptocurrency world and now between all of them have they have multi-billion market cap and billions of dollars of daily trading volume. They are simply tokens pegged to stable assets such as USD, CNY, EUR. The whole world transact in these currencies with multi trillion dollar market caps so they are considered “stable” in value.

USDT King of the Hill Best and Worst Stablecoin

The most popular type of stablecoin is fiat backed stablecoins like USDT. The idea is simple, have a bank account with $100M in it, release 100M USDT tokens. When someone wants to withdraw, simply withdraw from the bank account. So while the idea is simple and likely is mostly true, there is a lot of speculation and worry regarding the analogies $100M in the bank. A shady business, bad banking relationships, and other controversy surrounds the supposedly safe and secure $100M in the bank.

With that being said, if you want a liquid stablecoin where you can trade large volumes of nearly any cryptocurrency in the world. USDT is the leader by a long shot. In the last year some serious competitors have entered the market focusing on transparency and compliance relative to USDT. TUSD, USDC, GUSD, and USDS, to name a few. While TUSD is the oldest, USDC has quickly surpassed it in market cap and trading volume with its partnerships and liquidity sourced at poloniex.

Where to Trade Stablecoins directly

More and more exchanges are enabling direct stablecoin trading pairs such as USD/USDT, DAI/USD, USDC/USD and others on Bitfinex. To DAI/USDT, DAI/EOSDT and others on HitBTC. When you trade stablecoins directly the math and calculation is very easy. You can litteral buy the other stablecoin for less than $1, and sell stablecoins you do have for more than $1.

This is the easiest way to trade stablecoins, but not the most profitable. If you look at the price charts supply and demand sometimes causes the prices to move up to 5% in either direction. But for the most part these trades stay within a few % as bots and other arbitrageurs will fill in when there is profit.

Trading it indirectly

Trading stablecoins indirectly is an opportunity to make more profit as its much harder for arbitrageurs to keep these markets tight. The best stablecoin I have found to trade is the DAI/ETH and ETH/(xxx) other USD stablecoin pair.

DAI is a very cool but not very well understood cryptocurrency. It does hold risks, but the system has proven secure and resilient. Overtime DAI has become more and more liquid as a stablecoin, which has tightened margins. But there is still plenty of opportunities to make a profit with DAI.

The best place to trade DAI currently is on its native truly decentralized exchange eth2dai.com. As a truly decentralized exchange, every order in the order book as well as every trade performed on the exchange is an onchain transaction. This makes the exchange completely transparent, but slightly slow and expensive. During low volatility buy/sell orders cost around $.10 per order, but during periods of high ETH transaction activity it can cost as much as dollars per order. You can always use a lot fee, but it's a first come first serve so the orderbook or general market price could change a lot if your transaction took a few minutes to confirm.

Decentralized Stablecoins are the most volatile (relative to 1 USD) and profitable to trade. This is partially because they are newer and less understood, but more because they are generally less liquid as a market maker would actually need to create the DAI he/she could not just go to the bank and get a bunch of stablecoins to make a market.

Example:

Some positive Ethereum news came out, maybe Vitalik discovered a scaling solution. The market price on high volume centralized exchanges spikes up. ETH very quickly raises 10% in price.

Your opportunity:

Likely DEX exchanges like eth2dai.com will not move nearly as fast. So if you have your funds ready on eth2dai as well as opposite funds on a centralized exchange you could buy up the orderbook of ETH below the 10% price, and sell it instantaneously on the centralized exchange. So let’s say you buy 10 ETH on eth2dai for $400 and at the same time sell 10 ETH on a centralized exchange for $410, you just made $100 with almost no risk.

These opportunities generally happen when the price quickly goes up or down, but it can also happen when a very large order is placed on a DEX. For example 1000+ ETH sell orders have been placed on eth2da which can take quite some time to get bought on DEX’s. Also during panic, many users with buy orders can login to cancel their high buy orders fast enough so you can sell high on a DEX and buy low on a centralized exchange.

Understanding the risks

As one of if not the safest trade in cryptocurrency, it's important to remember that nothing is risk free. There are risks to everything in life, from smart contract flaws for DAI to 3rd party risks on fiat backed stablecoins like tether. One of the least desirable traits of stablecoins is that they all have downside risk, and none of them really have upside potential. But with that being said they are for the most part going to be around $1 all the time. Just be careful and keep an eye out for regulatory, contract, or custodial risks and downside potential for your stablecoins.

Because, the downside issue caused from panic, illiquidity, or some sort of combination of both, is also your opportunity to profit. For example USDT, as heavily criticized and complained about as it is. If you would have purchased it every time its traded at a discount of up to $.20, its historically always bounced back to 1 and if you had been a buyer during those times, you could have profited those 20% with relatively low risk (depending how you feel about holding tether.to 3rd party risk).

I have bought $1 stablecoin for as little as $.95 and sold it for as much $1.05. That is 10% on simply trading $1.
\n

\n
One nuance of this type of trading is that if you want to do it profitably and make it worth your time you will probably need to have quite a few USD to start.
\n
\n
1% of $100 is only $1.
1% of $10,000 is $100.
\n
\n
A $1 trade is probably not worth your time or fees.
A $100 on the other hand is a good day's work.
\n

\n

\n
What is a stablecoin
\n
Stablecoins have become hugely popular in the cryptocurrency world and now between all of them have they have multi-billion market cap and billions of dollars of daily trading volume. They are simply tokens pegged to stable assets such as USD, CNY, EUR. The whole world transact in these currencies with multi trillion dollar market caps so they are considered “stable” in value.
\n

\n

\n
USDT King of the Hill Best and Worst Stablecoin
\n
The most popular type of stablecoin is fiat backed stablecoins like USDT. The idea is simple, have a bank account with $100M in it, release 100M USDT tokens. When someone wants to withdraw, simply withdraw from the bank account. So while the idea is simple and likely is mostly true, there is a lot of speculation and worry regarding the analogies $100M in the bank. A shady business, bad banking relationships, and other controversy surrounds the supposedly safe and secure $100M in the bank.
\n

\n
With that being said, if you want a liquid stablecoin where you can trade large volumes of nearly any cryptocurrency in the world. USDT is the leader by a long shot. In the last year some serious competitors have entered the market focusing on transparency and compliance relative to USDT. TUSD, USDC, GUSD, and USDS, to name a few. While TUSD is the oldest, USDC has quickly surpassed it in market cap and trading volume with its partnerships and liquidity sourced at poloniex.
\n

\n
Where to Trade Stablecoins directly
\n
More and more exchanges are enabling direct stablecoin trading pairs such as USD/USDT, DAI/USD, USDC/USD and others on Bitfinex. To DAI/USDT, DAI/EOSDT and others on HitBTC. When you trade stablecoins directly the math and calculation is very easy. You can litteral buy the other stablecoin for less than $1, and sell stablecoins you do have for more than $1.
\n

\n
This is the easiest way to trade stablecoins, but not the most profitable. If you look at the price charts supply and demand sometimes causes the prices to move up to 5% in either direction. But for the most part these trades stay within a few % as bots and other arbitrageurs will fill in when there is profit.
\n

\n
Trading it indirectly
\n
Trading stablecoins indirectly is an opportunity to make more profit as its much harder for arbitrageurs to keep these markets tight. The best stablecoin I have found to trade is the DAI/ETH and ETH/(xxx) other USD stablecoin pair.
\n

\n
DAI is a very cool but not very well understood cryptocurrency. It does hold risks, but the system has proven secure and resilient. Overtime DAI has become more and more liquid as a stablecoin, which has tightened margins. But there is still plenty of opportunities to make a profit with DAI.
\n

\n

\n
The best place to trade DAI currently is on its native truly decentralized exchange eth2dai.com. As a truly decentralized exchange, every order in the order book as well as every trade performed on the exchange is an onchain transaction. This makes the exchange completely transparent, but slightly slow and expensive. During low volatility buy/sell orders cost around $.10 per order, but during periods of high ETH transaction activity it can cost as much as dollars per order. You can always use a lot fee, but it's a first come first serve so the orderbook or general market price could change a lot if your transaction took a few minutes to confirm.
\n

\n
Decentralized Stablecoins are the most volatile (relative to 1 USD) and profitable to trade. This is partially because they are newer and less understood, but more because they are generally less liquid as a market maker would actually need to create the DAI he/she could not just go to the bank and get a bunch of stablecoins to make a market.
\n
Example:
\n
Some positive Ethereum news came out, maybe Vitalik discovered a scaling solution. The market price on high volume centralized exchanges spikes up. ETH very quickly raises 10% in price.
\n

\n
Your opportunity:
\n
Likely DEX exchanges like eth2dai.com will not move nearly as fast. So if you have your funds ready on eth2dai as well as opposite funds on a centralized exchange you could buy up the orderbook of ETH below the 10% price, and sell it instantaneously on the centralized exchange. So let’s say you buy 10 ETH on eth2dai for $400 and at the same time sell 10 ETH on a centralized exchange for $410, you just made $100 with almost no risk.
\n

\n
These opportunities generally happen when the price quickly goes up or down, but it can also happen when a very large order is placed on a DEX. For example 1000+ ETH sell orders have been placed on eth2da which can take quite some time to get bought on DEX’s. Also during panic, many users with buy orders can login to cancel their high buy orders fast enough so you can sell high on a DEX and buy low on a centralized exchange.
\n

\n
Understanding the risks
\n
As one of if not the safest trade in cryptocurrency, it's important to remember that nothing is risk free. There are risks to everything in life, from smart contract flaws for DAI to 3rd party risks on fiat backed stablecoins like tether. One of the least desirable traits of stablecoins is that they all have downside risk, and none of them really have upside potential. But with that being said they are for the most part going to be around $1 all the time. Just be careful and keep an eye out for regulatory, contract, or custodial risks and downside potential for your stablecoins.
\n

\n
Because, the downside issue caused from panic, illiquidity, or some sort of combination of both, is also your opportunity to profit. For example USDT, as heavily criticized and complained about as it is. If you would have purchased it every time its traded at a discount of up to $.20, its historically always bounced back to 1 and if you had been a buyer during those times, you could have profited those 20% with relatively low risk (depending how you feel about holding tether.to 3rd party risk).
\n

",
