| memo | Hi ! I've been a core developer on hive for three years now, working on features that are now powering the chain and improving user experience like RC delegations or recurrent transfers and currently wrapping up some features that will go live in hard fork 27. I'm also hosting the monthly core dev meeting. I would like to carry on working for hive for a fourth year. I am looking for support on my renewed proposal as the current one will expire soon. It's the same deal as the last one. Could you review it and maybe vote on it if it's worth your support ? https://peakd.com/me/proposals/261 Thanks a lot ! |

| body |

From Wolfram Eilenberger's Time of the Magicians : Wittgenstein, Benjamin, Cassirer, Heidegger, and the Decade That Reinvented Philosophy, Ernst Cassirer acts against an antisemitic neighbour via writing him a letter.

AS WE KNOW, it was not easy to make Cassirer lose his composure. His labors were completely unaffected by the challenges of the financial crisis of 1922–1923. He finished the first volume of his Philosophy of Symbolic Forms and immediately set about preparing for the second part, which would be devoted to mythical thought. Myths and their associated rituals and taboos have from ancient times provided a form of orientation through the world and a guide for action; indeed, they constitute the origin of symbolic formation as such. “You really don’t need to worry about me: not only am I bearing my solitude well, as ever, I am seeking it out, since it is the best and absolutely tried and tested salve for my nerves, which have recently been subject to a certain amount of stress,” he wrote on July 5, 1922, from the study of his Hamburg villa, where he was buried under tomes about religious history and ethnology, to his wife, who was staying, along with the children, with relatives in Vienna.

Yet the events of the previous month had left their impression on him. By then his children, particularly Anna, age fourteen, had already been subjected once or twice to “shouts from neighbors’ houses” on the way to school, but the recent occurrence had crossed another line. It was too much for even the imperturbable Ernst Cassirer:

Hamburg, 10 June 1922

Dear Sir, Yesterday afternoon you used my absence from home to approach my wife and father-in-law, engage in a conversation with them and in the end shout some insults across the canal. Such behaviors toward a lady to whom you have not even been introduced and toward a 76-year-old man speak for themselves: it would be otiose to add anything about the nature of such actions.

I have, as your neighbor, drawn clear and distinct boundaries between us—and I must most urgently ask you to make no further attempts to traverse those boundaries. Hitherto I have always successfully sought to avoid any dealings with people of your kind, and I must also urge other fathers from our neighborhood, in the interest of the upbringing of my children, to avoid any contact with your son.

What had happened? The day before, a neighbor named Hachmann, from the other side of the tributary of the Alster, whose garden abutted the Cassirers’ property, had responded furiously to a request from Frau Professor Cassirer, doubtless with the greatest politeness, as to whether the Hachmanns’ seven-year-old son might not wish to play a little more quietly, or indeed somewhere other than in his own garden, since the shrill and irritating noises he was producing disturbed the summer reading of Frau Cassirer and her father, who was staying with the family in Hamburg.

The retort, shouted as they sat in their sunlit garden, was vicious: “Do you think you don’t disturb us? The mere sight of you—you all belong in Palestine.”

Looking back from her American exile, Toni Cassirer recalled that dispute between neighbors as a crucial turning point: “From that day I began to free myself from Germany.”

The unabashed directness of Hachmann’s hatred was probably not the factor here, as much as Toni Cassirer’s keen sense that in those early critical years of the Weimar Republic an explosive mixture of anti-capitalism, anti-communism, and anti-Semitism was brewing, all the while finding more and more followers even in the circles of the cultured elite. Ernst Cassirer believed, as his letter makes clear, that he could escape the acts of impertinence associated with this shift in public mood, even as it increasingly made itself felt in everyday life, with clearly delineated boundaries between public and private, buttressed by impeccable bourgeois etiquette, and by what he saw as a scholarly retreat into his own social circles and his own four walls.

During that summer, nothing could have been further from his mind than the idea of bidding farewell to his German homeland, and particularly to Hamburg. After all, possibly for the first time he now felt acknowledged, fully and entirely accepted by his peers. This was not least because Cassirer had recently discovered his true thinking space. In his case it was not a lonely cabin on a hillside in the Black Forest, but the library of a private scholar of cultural science who had collected several tens of thousands of rare studies in intellectual and scientific history on his shelves, and organized them in a very idiosyncratic way. This was the library of Abraham (“Aby”) Moritz Warburg, the scion of one of the world’s most influential banking families, which Cassirer first entered in the winter of 1920 and which for the next ten years would be the site of inspiration for his work.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://niklasblog.com/?p=25727

|

\n
\n

Hamburg, 10 June 1922

Dear Sir, Yesterday afternoon you used my absence from home to approach my wife and father-in-law, engage in a conversation with them and in the end shout some insults across the canal. She lists Riot grrrl and Crass as influences. This shows in this short book (96 pages) which is an experimental trip through notions and experiences in North America.
\n

[...] we catch glimpses of Desert Storm, the Oklahoma City Bombing, random street violence, the petrochemical industry, small town Deadheads, a toilet with uterus lining in it, the county STD clinic, and missionaries at the front door. Each is shared through language of the body; the sensation of experiencing many of the defining events and moments of a country.
Publisher's info\n
\n
Some of Remy's prose is lovely stream-of-consciousness:
\n

No, no, no. It’s Desert Storm, one s. OR Choices! Operation Desert Shield, The Gulf War, Persian Gulf War, The 1st Gulf War, Gulf War I, First Iraq War, Kuwait War. OR A triple series ofTopps playing cards, exactly like the sports cards boys have binders full of. Series 1 – Coalition for Peace Series 2 – Victory Series Series 3 – Homecoming Edition Finally, memorabilia I can understand. I shuffle through them like they’re part of some memory matching game. Daddy’s Home, Carpet Bombing, Stopping the Oil’s Flow…
\n
\n
Other fragments are so tiny that it's nearly impossible to shake how hyperkinetic this book is:
\n

*Monica Lewinsky’s internship was unpaid.
\n
\n
The book follows me slightly, and some of its phrases slip into my conscious and are interesting; Other bits of information quickly fall to the wayside.
\n
This is a laudable and brief effort; I wish there had been more focus on the content, which would undoubtedly have weaved a more comprehensive story than this book.
\n
On the other hand, it is more interesting than a lot of memoirs that often leave me with boring interludes. This book is not boring, no matter how you turn it, and that is, in itself, a short storm of fresh air.
\n

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://niklasblog.com/?p=25723

",

| body |

Cave art: Celebes warty pig. This may be the oldest cave art known to humanity, approximately 45,500 years old.

I just heard an episode of BBC World Service: The Documentary, with the title My viral video and me.

In it, 33-year-old Colm Flynn interviews individuals who have had a 'viral hit', i.e. a video that suddenly rose to fame without being produced by someone who is already famous, a phenomenon that is, these days, both more seldom and more often seen than before.

Flynn asked one person what they felt when the 'love' that people sent via youtube comments dissipated over time.

When I listened to the documentary, it was clear to me that Flynn was sucked into fandom, a place where 'fame' often outweighs rational thinking. Sure, in the world of pop, rationality isn't worth much—which is, to me, as it should be—but to think a short and immediate comment is the same as love, is, to myself, profoundly vexing.

At the very least, if true, it would be extremely hyperkinetic; Imagine a world where we fully and completely absorb what others say about us. Then imagine thinking about what others may be saying about us. Extend that to think about what people have said about us in the past, how that plays into the present, and what might be said about us in the future. And then paint 'love' and 'hate' and other disparate and superlative words on thoughts, often without nuance.

In short: I don't think it's healthy to give a fuck about what other people think about you while I think care is super-healthy; it all depends on context and intention, both from the giver to the receiver.

Haven't we all confused good intention with malice at some point in our lives?

Flynn believes 'love' is in youtube comments. He may be right, but it's a flippant and vapid remark to make, as in 'What did you feel when the love died down?' when he (hopefully) meant 'What did you feel when people were no longer commenting on your youtube video en masse?'

Flynn interviewed Rebecca Black, famous for Friday, a low-budget video and song, that became extremely well-known in a short period of time. Black spoke of how negative comments online affected her at the time, when she was thirteen years old. She added that 'years of therapy' helped her feel better and be able to handle all of that.

Therapy. Not 'love' from a machine that always ends up feeding its users right-wing hate.

Why can't we use pigs as surrogate parents for human babies?

We share most of our DNA with each other.

If we cast aside the biological trickery that must happen for this to be feasible, and also to answer my own question, I think the answer is: people would deem it unethical.

I think a lot of humans couldn't care less about a pig's suffering in the process. The same humans don't care about the suffering of human surrogate parents who do it for money, so imagine how little they have the capacities to care about an animal surrogate parent.

Part of me would love to know what, for example, the catholic church would say about a human who was born from an animal.

Imagine yourself as a follower of a religion that doesn't make room for things outside The Creator's comprehension: doesn't that point to the fact that the religion were completely made up by humans?

Ever since I was a little boy I had issues with religion. I mean, I grew up in a multi-cultural place, for which I am grateful. My friends and their families ushered me in and showed me a plethora of cultures that enriched my life and opened doors that I did not know to exist.

What I mean is this: religions are mostly barriers and not just rules. When a child and I came across a barrier, I asked myself why it existed. The most common answer was 'Because it's always been like that', which is, naturally, a shit answer. You fool no child with that answer: they see right through it.

What so-called grown-ups do when reinforcing that traditionalist mindset, is limit the capabilities of a child. I can't say I have many barriers myself, and I'd love to say I have none, but I know better; Some times I think life is one big game where the only rule is to try to remove all barriers before we die.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://niklasblog.com/?p=25712

|

This may be the oldest cave art known to humanity, approximately 45,500 years old.
\n\n
I just heard an episode of BBC World Service: The Documentary, with the title My viral video and me.
\n
In it, 33-year-old Colm Flynn interviews individuals who have had a 'viral hit', i.e. a video that suddenly rose to fame without being produced by someone who is already famous, a phenomenon that is, these days, both more seldom and more often seen than before.
\n
Flynn asked one person what they felt when the 'love' that people sent via youtube comments dissipated over time.
\n
When I listened to the documentary, it was clear to me that Flynn was sucked into fandom, a place where 'fame' often outweighs rational thinking. Sure, in the world of pop, rationality isn't worth much—which is, to me, as it should be—but to think a short and immediate comment is the same as love, is, to myself, profoundly vexing.
\n
At the very least, if true, it would be extremely hyperkinetic; Imagine a world where we fully and completely absorb what others say about us. Then imagine thinking about what others may be saying about us. Extend that to think about what people have said about us in the past, how that plays into the present, and what might be said about us in the future. And then paint 'love' and 'hate' and other disparate and superlative words on thoughts, often without nuance.
\n
In short: I don't think it's healthy to give a fuck about what other people think about you while I think care is super-healthy; it all depends on context and intention, both from the giver to the receiver.
\n
Haven't we all confused good intention with malice at some point in our lives?
\n
Flynn believes 'love' is in youtube comments. He may be right, but it's a flippant and vapid remark to make, as in 'What did you feel when the love died down?' when he (hopefully) meant 'What did you feel when people were no longer commenting on your youtube video en masse?'
\n
Flynn interviewed Rebecca Black, famous for Friday, a low-budget video and song, that became extremely well-known in a short period of time. Black spoke of how negative comments online affected her at the time, when she was thirteen years old. She added that 'years of therapy' helped her feel better and be able to handle all of that.
\n
Therapy. Not 'love' from a machine that always ends up feeding its users right-wing hate.
\n
\n
Why can't we use pigs as surrogate parents for human babies?
\n
We share most of our DNA with each other.
\n
If we cast aside the biological trickery that must happen for this to be feasible, and also to answer my own question, I think the answer is: people would deem it unethical.
\n
I think a lot of humans couldn't care less about a pig's suffering in the process. The same humans don't care about the suffering of human surrogate parents who do it for money, so imagine how little they have the capacities to care about an animal surrogate parent.
\n
Part of me would love to know what, for example, the catholic church would say about a human who was born from an animal.
\n
Imagine yourself as a follower of a religion that doesn't make room for things outside The Creator's comprehension: doesn't that point to the fact that the religion were completely made up by humans?
\n
Ever since I was a little boy I had issues with religion. I mean, I grew up in a multi-cultural place, for which I am grateful. My friends and their families ushered me in and showed me a plethora of cultures that enriched my life and opened doors that I did not know to exist.
\n
What I mean is this: religions are mostly barriers and not just rules. When a child and I came across a barrier, I asked myself why it existed. The most common answer was 'Because it's always been like that', which is, naturally, a shit answer. You fool no child with that answer: they see right through it.
\n
What so-called grown-ups do when reinforcing that traditionalist mindset, is limit the capabilities of a child. I can't say I have many barriers myself, and I'd love to say I have none, but I know better; Some times I think life is one big game where the only rule is to try to remove all barriers before we die.
\n

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://niklasblog.com/?p=25712

",

Your IQ, he says, will govern where you end up in life: with an IQ of 130, you can be an attorney or an editor; at 115, you can be a nurse or a sales manager; at 100, you can be a receptionist or a police officer; at 90, you can be a janitor. Peterson’s defence of IQ rests on shaky foundations. While he tells students that IQ was empirically established through Charles Spearman’s factor analysis, he does not share the well-known critique of that method: factor analysis supports both of the contradictory causal explanations of intelligence (intelligence as innate versus intelligence as the product of environmental advantage). Peterson then stacks the deck in favour of biology, citing brain size and neural conduction velocity (essentially, the speed at which an electrical pulse moves through tissue) as the determinants of IQ. And, ironically, the more experienced the writer, the more likely one may be to think they’re a complete fraud. In fact, some creatives rack up impressive achievements all while feeling certain that, at any moment, someone’s going to expose them as a poseur.

[...]

Give the manuscript a thoughtful read-through (or two) before you give feedback. The writer is in a vulnerable position. You owe it to this person to prove that you’ve invested more than a quick glance and offered a snap judgment. Don’t skim. Read deeply. Take notes.

[...]

Feedback is really about the quality of your suggestions, not the quantity. If the writer’s work needs proofreading, suggest a thorough line edit rather than picking at every little grammar, spelling, and punctuation nit. It alleges Amazon and the publishers use a clause known as “Most Favored Nations” (MFN) to keep ebook prices artificially high, by agreeing to price restraints that force consumers to pay more for ebooks purchased on retail platforms that are not Amazon.com.

[...]

Hagens Berman sued Apple and the Big Five publishers for fixing ebook prices in 2011, in a case that would eventually lead to suits from several US states and the Department of Justice, which accused Apple of colluding in order to break up Amazon.com’s dominance in the ebook market. In that case, the five publishers settled for $166m (£120m), while Apple lost at trial and was order to pay out $450m in 2016, after a lengthy legal process that ended when the US supreme court declined to hear the company’s challenge.
Cain, Sian. 2021. “Amazon.Com And ‘Big Five’ Publishers Accused Of Ebook Price-Fixing.” The Guardian.
