| title | How Andrew Yang's Policies Empower Women - The Freedom Dividend |
| body | Not all work that we do in our society is a paid job. Women tend to do more of this type of work which goes unpaid. Women do the majority of the reproductive labor. Like cooking, cleaning and childcare. The work that we do is important, society places value on it. However, the current market does not. This is a flaw in our system. During the slave-owning plantation era, female slaves were priced by the slave traders for reproductive labor value. A slave with one child was considered more valuable because she was fertile and had survived childbirth, which meant she would likely survive again. Not only was she considered more valuable, but her offspring were as well. This was way back in the 1700-1800’s and they were measuring the value of women as child birthing labor machines. So this is not a new idea by any means. As a society, we know that more attentive caretakers are important to a child’s well-being and development. But how does anyone expect us to spend more time with our children when we are forced to place them in daycare and go to work just to survive? This is where Andrew Yang’s Freedom Dividend comes into play. A two person household will be bringing in an extra $2,000 a month. That is a serious game changer for many families. Often times, a working mother doesn’t even make $2,000 a month, especially if you take out the cost of daycare and commuting. The Freedom Dividend may allow her to quit her job and stay home where she can focus on more of those reproductive labor duties. If a mother chooses not to quit her job, this extra $2,000 per month can be used to buy shoes, clothes and necessities for the child. Her family could go on more vacations and have more family outings. The Freedom Dividend also allows parents to spend more money on extracurricular activities like sports or music lessons. The Freedom Dividend is especially empowering to single mothers. It may allow a single mom to reduce her work hours and spend more time with her kids. It may allow her to pursue higher education, which may have been previously impossible due to childcare and living expenses. She could also go on more vacations and pay for extracurriculars. More money in the hands of moms means more growth for their local economy as well. Spending more money and purchasing more products will create new opportunities for everyone in the community. One of the most impactful ways Andrew Yang’s Freedom Dividend empowers women is by giving women the choice to leave an abusive or exploitative relationship. It’s hard enough to survive on a two-person income, paying bills by yourself becomes an almost impossible obstacle for the average woman. With the Freedom Dividend, women would be able to become less financially dependent on their partners, allowing them to secure other housing options. I know several women who are currently in relationships where their partner is abusive, either verbally or physically. When you ask them why they won’t leave their men, they say things like: “I can’t afford to rent my own place” or “I don’t have my own car or the money to buy one.” These problems are simple to solve and it’s ridiculous that we haven’t done so already. What about exploitative jobs? Sex work is a common avenue used to create an exploitative relationship with women. Sometimes women enter into sex work for survival. Often times these women are homeless and are just trying to meet their basic needs like shelter, food and hygiene. With $1000 a month, they would be able to meet those needs and pursue other options if they wanted to. Personally, I think we should decriminalize sex work along with the Freedom Dividend. This would give current sex workers more options and freedom. They would also be able to obtain medical care when they needed it and report assaults without the fear of prosecution. What about creating jobs? $1000 a month also aids in creating more female entrepreneurs. That extra monthly income would let women start up small businesses doing things they’re actually passionate about. Things they enjoy doing. Not a job where they’re putting boxes on shelves all day. A robot can do that. Robots are doing that. $1000 can buy supplies for handmade jewelry and crafts. It can buy art supplies, you can buy a new camera for photography. You could even set yourself up with some decent recording equipment to do YouTube videos and tutorials. Personally, I used to have a little side cake business where my husband and I would make custom cakes by order for our local community. There are supplies that I could have used to make decorating way more cost efficient and less time consuming but I didn’t have the extra money to invest in it. And imagine how much our business would have grown as well. Every adult in our community, which was rural to begin with, would have an extra $1000 per month. I know our business would have grown because people have told me that they would love to get a custom cake for their occasion but they can’t afford to pay me what I charge. If I charge much less, I won’t be making any money. I can’t compete with a $30 grocery store cake when people are short on cash. But with the economic boost that the Freedom Dividend gives all of us, we can afford to purchase these types of things. I could have even quit working at my wage slave job and just focus on my small businesses in this type of environment. That would allow me to be home more and spend more time with my famiy. Let's discuss volunteer work. Women love volunteering. It’s a fact. We volunteer at higher rates than men consistently. With 29.4% of women VS 23% of men volunteering. With the Freedom Dividend, we would have more time to devote to volunteer work. Volunteer work connects us to other people in our communities. It increases social skills, it increases self confidence because when you are doing good for others, it gives you a natural sense of accomplishment. Kind of like a “Hey, I did some awesome shit today, I made a difference in someone’s life.” Of course it’s gonna make you feel good. Which reduces stress and makes you happier. Now let’s talk about safety. How many women carry some form of personal protection in their purse or hidden in their clothing? Some women don’t feel safe walking around in their own communities. Especially those that live in impoverished neighborhoods. A higher crime rate coincides with a higher poverty rate. Studies show that when we give people money, stress levels decrease and overall crime significantly decreases as well, by up to 40%. That’s a huge deal. With the Freedom Dividend reaching everyone around us, our communities will become safer and women will be able to feel more confident in themselves, their choices and the environment around them. Overall, what does female empowerment come down to? It comes down to the ability to say yes or no, to choose. This is exactly what the Freedom Dividend does for us. It gives us the ability to choose. If you are interested in learning even more about Andrew Yang, be sure to check out yang2020.com. I have also posted several links below where you can learn more about all the things I talked about in this article. And I wanna know what YOU would do with your $1000 a month Freedom Dividend. Please let me know in the comments! Much love. |

| body | Hello Steemit, I am a 32 year old mother of four daughters. I live in Arizona with my husband and best friend. I love spending time with my family and making every day as epic as I can. My family and I spent some time being homeless this year and had been living a nomadic lifestyle. We recently got approved for housing and move in tomorrow. I have been a basic income advocate for about six years now. I first learned about a Resource Based Economy from Peter Joseph and shortly after found Scott Santens, a champion for basic income advocacy. My family is receiving our own version of a basic income through Patreon and crowd funding. I have an article specifically detailing how a basic income of only $1000 per month would have kept my family from becoming homeless. Basic income is the way forward into the future. It is what is going to combat economic insecurity for families just like mine and I advocate for this future every day. I am a student of mindfulness and an advocate for human rights. I'm a unique atom configuration...just like you. You can check out more about my family's journey at canadayvibes.com. Much love |

| title | Consumerism and Universal Basic Income |
| body | I often think about how chaotic the world is. We live in chaos every day. It's incredible to me that we manage to navigate it at all. Humans are growing increasingly hostile with each passing year. I worry about the future of our society if we fail to save ourselves. Consumerism is a disease that we are all forced to have. It's a disease that is vital to the market structure. If people stop consuming, it all falls apart. The most insidious part of this is the work type culture that we have all ingrained within our society. Everyone knows that you have to go and get a job if you want to live. Those jobs are generated by consumption. That is what marketing and advertising are for, to relentlessly pound into us that we don't have enough. We need the newest phone, the bigger TV, the more high tech car. Which leads us into intrinsic obsolescence. This leads to the waste of resources. If you make the best possible goods for your customers then they don't come back to buy more. Less repeat purchases mean less profit which means...less jobs. You lose market share and have to fire people, those people who don't have income anymore can't consume and even more jobs are lost. The world slows and humans suffer. This is the ultimate flaw in the jobs for income narrative. You have to generate jobs at all costs. At any cost. This is where the power of the elite comes from, our consumption. If we want to consume more than we need, we have to work for them. At whatever price they deem fit, we essentially rent out our labor to them in order to satisfy our artificial wants that they imprint onto us through advertising in the first place. I know from personal experience that humans don't need a lot of money to live. People are broke because we succumb to the market advertising, we convince ourselves that we need things we don't actually need. This is consumerism and it is addictive. I had struggled with this for much of my young adult life. I grew up being able to have whatever I wanted. As a young adult, I saw money only as a continually flowing means to obtain what I wanted. I often felt like want and need were synonymous. My Amazon cart had a constant stream of products I wanted, or needed, in order to make me "happy." If I just get this air fryer, then I'll be happy. If I just get this new throw blanket for the couch, then I'll be happy. I'll finally have enough. But that's the thing...it's never enough, is it? I would just end up wanting more and more and this cycle would have continued until the end of time. Imagine if tomorrow everyone stopped buying things they didn't need. GDP would tank and the economic system along with it. Everything would fall apart. Shouldn't this prove that the system is stupid? Why do people have to buy things they don't need for our economic system to continue? This is why the decoupling of jobs from income is so important. It diminishes the need for consumer driven growth...and jobs. This is where the power lies, our consumption. If we decouple jobs from income this will help drive innovation for things that people actually need. Not the newest Galaxy phone or the next Apple watch. It will drive innovation for healthier food, cleaner water and more sustainable goods. When the big corporation's vanity products lose value they lose profit and hence, power. This is what a job should be, it shouldn't be necessary for survival. A job should be to afford you the ability to enhance your life with fancy gadgets and the new Jordans. Humans should have the right to choose not to waste additional resources if they wish, this is true liberty. This is where a universal basic income comes in. I believe a universal basic income to be that liberty. It is a step away from this system. Imagine if humans had a basic needs level income. Those people can refuse these jobs to begin with. Which further reduces the power of the elites. In the market, money is the power. An injection of income to the lowest rungs of society is an injection of power and a balancing of inequality. Inequality is also a driver of consumerism, crime and hate. Chaos, if you will. The effects of a universal basic income would give us less reliance on consumerism as a driver of our economy. It would give us the power to shift value systems across vast populations. Which can help people stop and think about the fact that there may be a better way to form our system. Instead of aiming for infinite amounts of growth, we can make our economy actually economize. The slow down of consumption will slow down GDP but it will also slow down climate change, socioeconomic inequality, hate, crime, stress, disease and premature death. When you think about it this way, it is complete madness that anyone can defend our current system. Take a wild guess at what the advertisers own. It's television. And we wonder why we don't see Andrew Yang more on TV. However, we are waking up to the fact that these corporations are polluting our Earth, demoralizing our citizens and keeping us placated with their material distractions. We are asking for more. A universal basic income is a threat to the elites because it offers us too much freedom. These corporations don't want us to stop needing things from them. If we stop using their products or create businesses to make our own, they lose revenue and lose power. The redistribution of wealth is not aligned with their goals of hoarding all the resources. A UBI gives us the opportunity to create our own resources. This is a fundamental step in creating a more balanced system. This year was an especially chaotic one for my family. Although, through experiencing homelessness I have found a more clear direction on where to focus my efforts in fighting against poverty. I also learned some very valuable lessons about want and need. There were a lot of things I thought I needed before becoming homeless. What I learned is that I only needed a few simple things. Shelter from the weather, clothing, clean water, food, access to medication and healthcare if needed. That's it. That's the end of the list of what I actually need. I have sat in reflection many times about all the things I had purchased in my life thus far under the false impression that I needed them. I have talked to homeless people before but it's completely different now. These people who have learned to live without basic needs, without enough. I feel the ache to have a place to call your own, to have permanence. I feel their despair and understand their dark humor. The United States that I have been exposed to this year is indeed dystopian. The invisible people who have fallen to the wayside of our society deserve a voice. They deserve free access to basic needs, as all humans do. Years ago, I would have said "yeah right" if you told me that UBI would become a major topic of discussion in my lifetime. We had shut down the idea so many times throughout history and I believed we would repeat it until we entered into another depression era. Have we come to it so soon? I had dreams of living long enough to see society rise up and demand justice for inequality. How fortunate I feel that it did not take very long at all. I have also had dreams of universal basic income being globally accepted as a right of existence, of humanity working together in harmony to preserve our planet and our race. A technologically advanced utopia of human cooperation and interconnection. Here's to hoping all my dreams come true. Much love, fellow humans. |

"body": "I often think about how chaotic the world is. We live in chaos every day. It's incredible to me that we manage to navigate it at all. Humans are growing increasingly hostile with each passing year. I worry about the future of our society if we fail to save ourselves.\n\nConsumerism is a disease that we are all forced to have. At any cost.\n\nThis is where the power of the elite comes from, our consumption. This is consumerism and it is addictive.\n\nI had struggled with this for much of my young adult life. I grew up being able to have whatever I wanted. As a young adult, I saw money only as a continually flowing means to obtain what I wanted. I often felt like want and need were synonymous. My Amazon cart had a constant stream of products I wanted, or needed, in order to make me \"happy.\" If I just get this air fryer, then I'll be happy. If I just get this new throw blanket for the couch, then I'll be happy. I'll finally have enough. But that's the thing...it's never enough, is it? I would just end up wanting more and more and this cycle would have continued until the end of time.\n\nImagine if tomorrow everyone stopped buying things they didn't need. GDP would tank and the economic system along with it. Everything would fall apart. Shouldn't this prove that the system is stupid? Why do people have to buy things they don't need for our economic system to continue?\n\nThis is why the decoupling of jobs from income is so important. Humans should have the right to choose not to waste additional resources if they wish, this is true liberty.\n\nThis is where a universal basic income comes in. Chaos, if you will.\n\nThe effects of a universal basic income would give us less reliance on consumerism as a driver of our economy. When you think about it this way, it is complete madness that anyone can defend our current system.\n\nTake a wild guess at what the advertisers own.
