| body | Creators [Digital Poppy](http://twitter.com/Poppy_Zone) have over time built up an oeuvre called the [Bluehills County Stories](https://itch.io/c/449424/bluehills-county-stories), with three noteworthy features: furry characters, Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and unapologetic queerness. Prior to the arrival of the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality, I had played the pay-what-you-want point-and-click adventure [Parsnip](https://bunbirb.itch.io/parsnip), in which those latter two elements were rather understated. But in the second major title in the series, [The Testimony of Trixie Glimmer Smith](https://digital-poppy.itch.io/trixie), both the Lovecraft and queer themes can't be missed. _Testimony_ knows what it's about, making it a stronger title than its predecessor. ###### "The queerest town in the country." It's literally impossible to meet a cishet person in this game, and that's a good thing! Which is not to say I wouldn't recommend playing _Parsnip_ first if you can spare its hour or two play time. A respectable chunk of _Testimony_'s fun comes from all the callbacks and references to the prior game, though there will be some continuity errors, so to speak. (I managed to get a notable character killed in _Parsnip_, then spent half of _Testimony_ hanging out with her.) And I'm already eyeing the third game, [Three Lesbians in a Barrow](https://digital-poppy.itch.io/lesbians), whose protagonist appeared only in text message conversations in _Testimony_. Getting to know these characters over months and playthroughs of different games has proven quite endearing! As for the Lovecraftian subject matter, it's interesting to see such an inclusive story take up that torch. Lovecraft was not, shall we say, especially well known for his tolerance and open-mindedness. The game text nods to this fact with a throwaway mention of in-universe author "P.H. Lovelace" being "speciesist", but perhaps more than that isn't needed. A queer furry adventure nabbing _The King in Yellow_ and owning it is a thumb bitten in the direction of that unfortunate legacy already. I'm pretty sure I'll work my way through the entire corpus of "Bluehills County Stories" before long, and _The Testimony of Trixie Glimmer Smith_ was the piece that assured me it'd be worth my while. It's $6 on Itch, check it out! |

| body | I've appreciated the sheer variety of items in the Racial Justice Bundle. The first games I picked out were quick-play shmups; then I played some meatier action and exploration titles; then recently I had a need for something that didn't demand too much of me from the player seat, and kicking back to read a "kinetic novel" sounded perfect. Enter [Highway Blossoms](https://vnstudioelan.itch.io/highway-blossoms) by [Studio Élan](https://vnstudioelan.com/), a yuri tale set in the present-day American Southwest. It did not disappoint! Completing the title took me a few sessions of clicking, reading, and listening, and every time I needed to sign off to attend to other things, I found myself looking forward to the next chance I'd have to see these characters' relationships develop. A few plot contrivances took some effort to suspend disbelief on (a gold rush in 20XX? folks on the road without cell phones in 20XX?), but it's the emotional beats that matter, here, not the backdrop. The story's climax in particular is brilliantly paced, with all the right measure of humor, intensity, and catharsis. I didn't _cry_, quite, but my lip was quivering! _HB_ provides two versions: an all-ages script available in the main install, and 18+ content that it takes a bit of hoop-jumping to add. I would definitely recommend the "adult content patch" if you're not averse to that sort of thing! The odd bits of coarse language make sense, and the _ero_ scenes work well. The prose isn't too purple*, and it portrays sex as fun, complicated, and imperfect in a really refreshing way. It even models healthy consent, which I find to be a relief in a genre that (in my admittedly limited experience) too often hits the viewer with non-con interactions sans content warnings as if they were the default expectation. ###### At least we're being honest about it, I guess...? I can level one criticism at _Highway Blossoms_, though: it is very much a _white_ tourist fantasy. The A plot is literally and explicitly about a bunch of Americans stomping around disturbing Native lands in an attempt to get rich. I'd say that's rather on the nose, if the text showed any more than a hand-wave's worth of self-awareness about it! You'd think that a story set in the American Southwest would at least feature some Latinx characters, but alas, there is a mere one nonwhite bit part, and voiced by a white actress no less. Sigh. That's not enough for me (from my privileged position) to withhold a recommendation for this heartful title, though. It's $13 on Itch, quite reasonable for a novella plus artwork, animation, music, voice acting, and even some fun reread features! Maybe what you need is some dusty sweaty love? ----- \* It is a _little_ purple. A gentle shade of lavender? |

| body | Itch has a reputation for hosting _weird_ games. Half-finished prototypes, entries for high-concept game jams, pornographic visual novels, whatever! I find it delightful, a hotbed of creativity unrestrained by the expectations of popular genres or the strictures of curatorial Puritanism. [10S](https://owch.itch.io/10s) by [Owch](https://twitter.com/owch_hurts) is one of those peculiar animals that gives Itch its rep. You can try to summarize it in the idiom of the mashup: "it's a tennis bullet hell with the randomized power-ups of a run-based Roguelike and a splash of _Arkanoid_'s ludic feel" perhaps? But in the time you spend squinting and trying to picture what that shakes out to, you might as well [watch a trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzF6QDnv7OI) or go play the thing yourself. "Defies description" has a new challenger. ###### When my wife saw this over my shoulder, she asked, "Why are you on a road?" Why indeed. This whole game is a koan. _10S_ is baffling, difficult even on its "Easy" setting, and sometimes frustrating, but by the end I came to appreciate that it is really well put together. For instance, I vented to my main gaming Discord that I thought its "skip to the level of your choice" feature was a chump option, given you receive no handicap to balance out all the powerups you've leapt over. But its existence helped me accomplish my win! Beating my head against the battle in World 3-2 for an hour or two with no stat boosts meant that when I doubled back to make a run all the way from 1-1 to the end, I had all the practice necessary to take my more juiced-up avatar through to victory. And none of this even touches on the "Part 2" included in your purchase: a world titled "Out" that almost entirely jettisons the tennis theme, instead letting you wander a surreal landscape smacking monsters, complete with RPG-style damage number flyouts. Was this a second, separate game that the author decided to tack on to her battle-tennis invention for the hell of it? Or is there some throughline between the two hinting at a well of deep lore? You'll have to play it and decide what you think! _10S_ is a fascinating, challenging artifact that can be yours for $5 on Itch. |

You can try to summarize it in the idiom of the mashup: \"it's a tennis bullet hell with the randomized power-ups of a run-based Roguelike and a splash of _Arkanoid_'s ludic feel\" perhaps? But in the time you spend squinting and trying to picture what that shakes out to, you might as well [watch a trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzF6QDnv7OI) or go play the thing yourself. \"Defies description\" has a new challenger.\n\n\n###### When my wife saw this over my shoulder, she asked, \"Why are you on a road?\" Why indeed. This whole game is a koan.\n \n_10S_ is baffling, difficult even on its \"Easy\" setting, and sometimes frustrating, but by the end I came to appreciate that it is really well put together. For instance, I vented to my main gaming Discord that I thought its \"skip to the level of your choice\" feature was a chump option, given you receive no handicap to balance out all the powerups you've leapt over. But its existence helped me accomplish my win! Beating my head against the battle in World 3-2 for an hour or two with no stat boosts meant that when I doubled back to make a run all the way from 1-1 to the end, I had all the practice necessary to take my more juiced-up avatar through to victory.\n\nAnd none of this even touches on the \"Part 2\" included in your purchase: a world titled \"Out\" that almost entirely jettisons the tennis theme, instead letting you wander a surreal landscape smacking monsters, complete with RPG-style damage number flyouts. Was this a second, separate game that the author decided to tack on to her battle-tennis invention for the hell of it? Or is there some throughline between the two hinting at a well of deep lore?\n\nYou'll have to play it and decide what you think! _10S_ is a fascinating, challenging artifact that can be yours for $5 on Itch.",

| body | Ever since the _Chainmail_ era of fantasy wargames, fantastical hacky-slashy RPGs have grappled with the conceit of "magic" as "the ability to hurl battlefield-leveling artillery from one's bare hands". It's a lot of fun! But if this is a mode in which one can do battle, what room remains for the humble sword and shield? Some designs put sharp limitations on how these powers could be used. The magus could wear no armor, use only very weak weapons, and had little "ammunition" for spellcraft; hurl one Fireball, put up a Mage Armor, throw two sets of Magic Missiles, and you were reduced to a bystander in a bathrobe. Problem was, while these factors perhaps "balanced" a wizard against a warrior in an abstract sense, it turned out not to be very _enjoyable_ from a gameplay perspective, especially as the genre narrowed an individual player's sphere of control from an army or squadron to a single "character". What does this have to do with [Haque](https://supertry.itch.io/haque), the low-res quick-play Roguelike by [SuperTry Studios](https://twitter.com/SuperTryStudios)? From my experiences playing a dozen or so characters before achieving a win, it appears that _Haque_ has taken the route of waving away all those cumbersome limiting systems from fireball-slinging wizardry, only to dump them on the head of the beleaguered melee fighter instead. My winning Sorcerer could pop off a 9-tile burst of burning death every other turn, at 70% or better accuracy, then jog around the room once or twice to replenish magic points before wiping the next area clean of foes in similar fashion. Meanwhile, the best meleeist I ever managed to put together had to settle for poking one monster at a time, missing roughly every other swing, and needing to expose himself to enemy attacks (or chug finite potions) to get back the juice he used to sneak past too-deadly encounters. wat? ###### If you try the game and wonder, "why doesn't mine look as bright and easy to read as this?", turn off "CRT" in the A/V options In fairness, "balance" is a bit of a bugbear in a single-player game without any kind of competitive leaderboarding aspect. You do what works to win, or you challenge yourself using something suboptimal, and the game goes on. But I would venture that it's important to make all the major archetypes available to the player at least viable for winning, and fun to engage with, and I'm not sure _Haque_ quite pulls that off. Maybe every character is meant to pick up some form of "Arcane Blast" to manage the crowds with. But why do only the Sorcerers get to ignore MP resource attrition? Why does every tick you spend in Werewolf form drain your power, even when it's doing nothing for you? Why does the "focused" buff improving weapon accuracy not even last long enough for you to take a single step before swinging, while the debuff from an Evil Eye spell will outlive most monsters you inflict it on? Ah well. Game balance is not an easy discipline, and _Haque_'s charming pixel shapes and quippy codex entries keep it enjoyable enough to play to the end, caster supremacy frustrations aside. It's not often you get to play a Pumpkin Werewolf accompanied by a Tiny Pig pet, or an Eagle Burglar with her trusty Tree Stump companion! $15 on Itch will induct many an intrepid dungeoneer into the rolls of the dead. |

| body | As an 80's child, I barely missed the heyday of the video arcade. I fondly remember a couple of glorious birthday parties at a local Atari-branded mall spot, burning bags of tokens on _Turtles in Time_, _Captain Commando_, and _Knights of the Round_.* But by the time I was tall enough to put my own quarter in a slot, the classics like _Pac-Man_, _Galaga_, _Dig-Dug_ and so forth were already long out of date. So in a way, [Switch 'N' Shoot](https://crowbarska.itch.io/switch-n-shoot) is like setting my birthdate back a decade and getting a taste of those games when they were a fresh new design: simple controls, high skill ceiling, and score-chasing addictiveness. Imagine walking up to a cabinet with these bold colors and a single, chunky, seductive button in the middle of its scratch-resistant console. ###### When you shoot, you switch directions. When you switch directions, you shoot. Does what it says on the tin _Switch 'N' Shoot_ has only one button to its control scheme, but that's enough to fuel a lot of fun. Your ship is always moving in one or the other direction, and pressing **the** button both changes your direction and spits a bullet upward. Mastering the timing of this single, multi-purpose action to clear away enemies and catch power-ups sounds trivial, but the progression of levels (an infinite loop, in true old-school arcade style) tunes the difficulty in a perfect curve that will keep you nudging your high score higher session after session. S'n'S also boasts endearing flourishes like a procedurally generated pilot name for every new run, and a strange bearded announcer figure who praises your accomplishments and mourns your defeats, in light humorous fashion. For $4 on Itch, this gem will erase boredom in any five or ten or thirty minutes you have at hand! ---- \* Why are the beat-'em-ups the ones I most clearly and longingly recall? Probably because you could get all the way to the end of one by feeding quarters and mashing buttons--no skill required! |

| body | [Tamashii](https://vikintor.itch.io/tamashii)* is another game from the Big Bundle whose tagline succeeded in grabbing my attention. "Weird Luciferian Puzzle Platformer". Luciferian, eh? Not "Satanic"? When I saw the option to choose between English and Portuguese for game text, I supposed that perhaps it was a quirk of the translation, but the translated text is flawless. The word choice is, I believe, intentional and apt. Most of the time when I see something about "Satanism" these days, it's in the context of the Satanic Temple or the Church of Satan, both of which are fundamentally atheistic organizations. They adopt the name and imagery of Christianity's devil figure as a way of expressing their opposition to entrenched religions and to take the piss, as it were. _Tamashii_, on the other hand, has or at least posits an actual theology. It says, "if there were a Creator or Patriarch who sent you forth into the world, and who expects service and obedience for having created you, rendering that service and obedience unquestioningly would not necessarily be good, right, or smart." Thus, Luciferian: we look to the example of the "Lightbringer" who rebelled against God as our role model. If that's the message the game wanted me to take away, it was effective! The authors could maybe have sold it better, though. You're not given a choice at any point in whether to rebel or comply (oh irony); progressing through the levels requires you to first do as the Patriarch bids, then eventually stray from the path He set out for you, whether you want to do either thing or not. And I don't know what the game's generically shock-seeking aesthetic has to say at all. There's _stuff_ everywhere that maybe makes you ask "eww, what is that?", but there's no answer to the question. Why are there chompy mouths on the walls? Why do nude bodies explode? Why does an angry baby appear and scream? The answer is "it's a decoration" or "it's a hazard" or "it's a jump scare", that's all. ###### Once you've seen one belligerent fetus or spontaneously-combusting fertility idol, you've seen them all. Oh, you probably want to know about the gameplay! On that count I give an unreserved thumbs-up. The core mechanic is that you can drop up to three "clones", little chattering totems that don't move on their own but can hold down buttons to open doors, attack enemies, or otherwise assist in solving puzzles. From start to finish, the game is about manipulating these simple tools in increasingly complicated ways and while evading increasingly tricky dangers, which is exactly where I like my puzzle-platformers to live. If you enjoy spike-dodging action, puzzles that take thought but won't make you ragequit, and weird opaque lore with Qabbalistic trappings, _Tamashii_ will be your jam. Available on Itch for $5! --- \* Why "Tamashii"? The game is in Portuguese, translated into English, with a sprinkling of Hebrew and Latin for the religious references. Where does the Japanese come from? Your guess is as good as mine... |

| body | If you were to conduct a _Family Feud_ survey titled "Trendy Elements in Indie Video Games", [Lenna's Inception](https://tccoxon.itch.io/lennas-inception) would hit at least five of the top ten. Retro visuals! Procedurally generated levels! Semi-sorta-nonviolent action required for the best ending!* Merely saying a game does something popular is neither interesting nor helpful, though; the question is how well it executes on those concepts compared to the rest of a crowded field. And on the "retro graphics" point, _Lenna's Inception_ excels. Everything looks just the way a _Legend of Zelda_ homage ought to look, down to the pixel. What's more, the game offers you the option of a _Game Boy_-esque 8-bit scheme, or a 32-bit style that straddles the _Super Nintendo_ and _PlayStation_ eras of 2D art. Where does your nostalgia sit? Pick what feels cozy! ###### Rooms in _Lenna's_ can be a bit sparse, at the generator's whim. But at least you have Henrietta the chicken to keep you company through the quiet stretches. I found the procedural-generation elements of _Lenna's Inception_ much less exciting, however. In concept, adding procgen to a _Zelda_ homage has a note of brilliance to it: the already timeless _Link to the Past_ saw a revival in speedrunning competition with the advent of ROM-hacked [randomizers](https://alttpr.com/en). Why not build a randomizer into the game from the outset? Unfortunately, rather than begin with a tightly crafted map ala _LttP_, then refresh the game's replayability by shuffling the locations of items and boss monsters, _LI_'s creators at [Bytten Studio](https://bytten-studio.com/) opted to randomize the layouts of the overworld and dungeons as a core feature. The result is replayable, yes, but with a saddening amount of algorithmically produced filler. You'll trudge through screen after screen with the same nonthreatening monsters or no-brain-required block-pushing puzzles, their only purpose being connective tissue between the dice-rolled locations of game-critical encounters. Discovering a secret stairway loses its thrill after the third such limp mini-dungeon comprised of two empty rooms and a crafting material pickup. ###### Perhaps the true value of _Lenna's_ procgen is turning on "Generator Visuals" and watching the resulting psychedelia whenever you enter a new dungeon. The "pacifist route" of _Lenna's_ has similar design issues. Say what you will about the heavy bludgeon of _Undertale_'s after-school moral, it remains the gold standard for the trope in how carefully and thoughtfully it communicates its agenda. Even in the marketing copy before you ever download the game, UT makes it clear that "don't kill the monsters" is an option, something to strive for. _Lenna's Inception_ gives you the barest hint in the form of a "Power of Compassion" item, somewhere between a third and halfway through the game, long past the point where playing the game straight as a _Zelda_-like has locked you out of getting the best ending. There's nothing in the game's storyline or themes that otherwise engages with nonviolence as a concept, either, making it truly feel like a trend-chasing afterthought. Dunks aside, I still enjoyed _LI_ enough to finish a playthrough, and I'd recommend it to anyone who craves a _Zelda_ fix! $10 on Itch gets you a lot of brush-cutting swordswomanship. ---- `*` Also e.g. "femme protagonist" and "casual queer rep", but I wouldn't even facetiously hint that those are tired tropes. If every game between here and the year 2100 starred queer ladies, those of us still alive could _start_ talking about scaling it back. |

| author | elseleth |
| body | If you keep an eye out for the term "millennial" in news and blogs, you'll catch sight of two narratives. One paints the children of the 80s and 90s as contemptible freeloaders, refusing to work for benefits to which they feel they are entitled. Another depicts the same group as a demographic of despair, staring down insurmountable walls of debt and inheriting a world irreparably damaged by the excesses of prior generations. In _[Night in the Woods](http://www.nightinthewoods.com/)_, you get both. _NitW_'s distinctly millennial crew knows the world is soon coming to an end, and in the meantime, they figure the best they can do is have fun. https://i.imgur.com/NX2ey8C.png ###### All millennials are also queer furries. True story. (Also: gorrammit, not another game that calls itself out as "just pixels") Protagonist Mae Borowski most represents the "freeloader" end of the spectrum. She drops out of college, moves back in with her parents, and refuses to get a job, preferring instead to spend her time romping around town committing petty crimes and hanging out with anyone who'll tolerate her presence. And yet she's also the most acutely aware of the end times at hand, plagued by visions of meaninglessness and devastation. Her friends are more responsible, to varying degrees, most of them at least holding down jobs. But they too party like the apocalypse is at hand, defying the unjust powers that be through acts of political subversion and destructive vandalism. Such juxtapositions run throughout _NitW_'s gameplay. You'll goof off with a variety of minigames, from _[Um Jammer Lammy](http://parappatherapper.wikia.com/wiki/Um_Jammer_Lammy)_ style guitar rhythm action to a complete playable arcade game, _[Demontower](http://nightinthewoods.wikia.com/wiki/Demontower)_, in between stretches of exploring a town teetering on the brink of economic collapse. Dialogue scenes run the gamut of emotion from laugh-out-loud wit to brutal fights over lost dreams and broken hearts. All challenge is optional; your task as a player is not to overcome obstacles with your skill, but to navigate this emotional landscape however your thoughts and whims guide you. https://i.imgur.com/pxo0lRa.png ###### The Party Barn is just one example of Possum Springs in decay. As the game progresses, you'll see businesses shuttered, edifices ruined under graffiti, and characters move on for good. It's hard not to see the metaphors at work here. Ours is a world hurtling toward its end, whether slowly via climate change or swiftly via all-consuming war. Grand dreams and aspirations for the future are a luxury at best, in most cases mere flights of fancy in the face of a work-until-death reality. We survive as long as we can, keeping our psychic balance with frivolous pursuits like, well, video games and cryptocurrency blogging. So when some incomprehensible cosmic being shows up in Mae's dreams and says there is no God, there is no meaning in life, and you'll all soon be swallowed by the hole at the center of everything? We know that feel. In this nihilistic way, _Night in the Woods_ resembles _[Doki Doki Literature Club!](https://steemit.com/gaming/@elseleth/doki-doki-literature-club-a-three-layer-deconstruction-cupcake-demiboy-vs-backlog-game-9)_ or _[Oxenfree](https://steemit.com/gaming/@elseleth/childe-oxenfree-to-the-dark-tower-came-demiboy-vs-backlog-game-7)_. There are so many unexplained elements and unresolved threads by the end of the game that some players asked creator Scott Benson if he intended to "fix the ending" in a recent patch. But if nothing else, _NitW_ comes out the opposite side of disaster with a stoic cheerfulness: we may all be doomed, but for now, life goes on. Until the blackness swallows us up, there will be band practice, and video games, and pizza. Pizza good. --- I was on inadvertent hiatus for a bit there, but "[Demiboy vs. Backlog](https://steemit.com/@elseleth)" is back! Next in the [play queue](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eWkhG5H2HjaUPgxvCwldUoCH6dNmUu85t5lA_c8Y6s4/edit?usp=sharing) is [Hand of Fate](http://store.steampowered.com/app/266510/Hand_of_Fate/). I've also added a "Wishlist" category to the doc, consisting of games that readers have recommended but which I don't yet own: currently _Gorogoa,_ _Owlboy,_ _Subnautica,_ _Tacoma,_ and _Persona 5._ Support my games blogging habit by grabbing one of these titles for me on [Steam](http://steamcommunity.com/id/sabrecat/wishlist)! https://i.imgur.com/mPcNw4T.png ###### Check out the [SteemGC tag](https://steemit.com/created/steemgc) for more gaming content! |

"body": "If you keep an eye out for the term \"millennial\" in news and blogs, you'll catch sight of two narratives. _NitW_'s distinctly millennial crew knows the world is soon coming to an end, and in the meantime, they figure the best they can do is have fun.\n\nhttps://i.imgur.com/NX2ey8C.png\n###### All millennials are also queer furries. True story. (Also: gorrammit, not another game that calls itself out as \"just pixels\")\n \nProtagonist Mae Borowski most represents the \"freeloader\" end of the spectrum. But they too party like the apocalypse is at hand, defying the unjust powers that be through acts of political subversion and destructive vandalism.\n\nSuch juxtapositions run throughout _NitW_'s gameplay. All challenge is optional; your task as a player is not to overcome obstacles with your skill, but to navigate this emotional landscape however your thoughts and whims guide you.\n\nhttps://i.imgur.com/pxo0lRa.png\n###### The Party Barn is just one example of Possum Springs in decay. As the game progresses, you'll see businesses shuttered, edifices ruined under graffiti, and characters move on for good.\n \nIt's hard not to see the metaphors at work here. We know that feel.\n\nIn this nihilistic way, _Night in the Woods_ resembles _[Doki Doki Literature Club!](https://steemit.com/gaming/@elseleth/doki-doki-literature-club-a-three-layer-deconstruction-cupcake-demiboy-vs-backlog-game-9)_ or _[Oxenfree](https://steemit.com/gaming/@elseleth/childe-oxenfree-to-the-dark-tower-came-demiboy-vs-backlog-game-7)_. There are so many unexplained elements and unresolved threads by the end of the game that some players asked creator Scott Benson if he intended to \"fix the ending\" in a recent patch. But if nothing else, _NitW_ comes out the opposite side of disaster with a stoic cheerfulness: we may all be doomed, but for now, life goes on. Until the blackness swallows us up, there will be band practice, and video games, and pizza.\n\nPizza good.\n\n---\n\nI was on inadvertent hiatus for a bit there, but \"[Demiboy vs. Backlog](https://steemit.com/@elseleth)\" is back! Next in the [play queue](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eWkhG5H2HjaUPgxvCwldUoCH6dNmUu85t5lA_c8Y6s4/edit?usp=sharing) is [Hand of Fate](http://store.steampowered.com/app/266510/Hand_of_Fate/). I've also added a \"Wishlist\" category to the doc, consisting of games that readers have recommended but which I don't yet own: currently _Gorogoa,_ _Owlboy,_ _Subnautica,_ _Tacoma,_ and _Persona 5._ Support my games blogging habit by grabbing one of these titles for me on [Steam](http://steamcommunity.com/id/sabrecat/wishlist)!\n\nhttps://i.imgur.com/mPcNw4T.png\n###### Check out the [SteemGC tag](https://steemit.com/created/steemgc) for more gaming content!",
