We moved away from our mountain idyll in February and swapped it for a life on the beach. I remember saying as we were moving stuff in, \"I think I'll be alright here, won't I\" but even I could hear the worry in my voice. \n\nAnd, it turns out I wasn't. 10 weeks after moving, I am back in the UK with a broken foot (long story involving, inevitably, the ubiquitous scooter), on my own and looking for a job. \n\nA bit of an upheaval but what can I say? Sometimes, life doesn't turn out how you expected. \n\nFor a couple of reasons, I was lucky enough to spend a few days with friends in the tranquility of the mountains before the long drive back to the UK and it might just have been life changing; in what I thought was the wreckage of my life, I might just have found salvation through a book, The Magic. \n\nIt's a self help book. I am not sure how you all feel about those but I have never rated them maybe because I never needed one before. Possibly due to my frame of mind at the time I started reading, the ethos behind the book resonated with me and so, instead of wallowing in self pity which would have been easy to do, I began to be grateful for all the things that I have in my life. I write down 10 of those things every morning now, concentrating for a few moments on each thought and consciously giving thanks. It might be thankfulness for a person or for being able to do a particular activity. Anything, no matter how small, that makes your life better. \n\nIt helped. So I haven't stopped. Every day, without fail, first thing in the morning, I write down things that for which I am grateful. Thinking of reasons why my life is good, even when it was falling apart around me, frames my thoughts for the rest of day. I start each day with a smile and feeling happy and that becomes a hard habit to break. And every night, just before I go to sleep, I think about the day and say thank you for the one single thing that was best about my day. \n\nIf you think it isn't for you, listen to Sincerely, X on Audible; listen to the first speaker and how powerful she is. I am not sure if she has read the book but she is certainly using the Magic. \n\nSo, I will let you know how it goes. In the meantime, I will crack on with my life with a smile only now, instead of blogging about living off grid and life in Spain, you will be hearing a lot more about swimming in freezing cold English lakes and the National Trust. \n\nI am grateful to all of you who have read this blog because sharing happiness makes me feel good. Yes, we have the great weather and live quite close to the beach but wow...having to deal with the complexities of life in both an unfamiliar bureaucratic system and in a foreign language has been hard. \n\nOf course, we have had the odd funny moments. For ages, we went around telling everyone from the supermarket checkout girl to the bank manager that we were “caliente”. In fact, this does mean hot but more in terms of how sexy you think someone is rather than the air temperature, which is what we meant.  And then there was the time that I tried to give the water man directions to my house and instead of telling him the house was high up, I ended up saying that it was open which isn’t quite the same thing and could have caused some confusion. \n\nSo, I obviously needed to improve my language skills and, since we live so far away from the town, an online course seemed the best option. Having used Babbel for a while but for some reason not really gelling with it, I have come across Memrise. \n\nNow, it’s not that other language learning apps don’t do any of the following but these are the reasons that I like Memrise: \n\n# Accessibility\n\nI can use Memrise on both my smartphone and my computer which I find very helpful. I really prefer to use the app on the computer but if we are out for the day and I am waiting around with time on my hands, what better use of it than to learn Spanish. \n\n# Learning Style\n\nThe app focuses on learning key words and phrases from the start rather than rote learning. It is more like a child would start to learn language rather than lists of vocabulary to learn or verbs to conjugate. The fact that I have key phrases from the very start means that I have quickly gained confidence with the language, meaning I talk more with the locals and thus become more proficient. \n\nAdditionally, the app uses a mixture of listening, reading and writing to really help the words stick in your head. The listening is via native speakers as well which greatly helps with the accent. \n\n# Reminders\n\nNow, some people might find this a bit childish but I quite like it. If you don’t access the app each day, it sends you a text reminding you to “report to training”. For me, this does prompt me to log back in and keep learning. \n\n# Sociability\n\nWith memrise, you have the option to follow other people and chat with them. I haven’t actually done this yet but perhaps I should in the name of research! \nI do also like the fact that there is a leaderboard. I am quite competitive so, again, this really helps me to keep working on my course as I try and get further up! \n\nI really think that Memrise is the best language app that I have come across but I would be very happy to hear of any other apps or ways of learning a new language that other people use.",
