Over het algemeen is DAO een hard gecodeerd regelsysteem dat bepaalt welke acties zullen worden uitgevoerd door gedecentraliseerde organisaties. De term DAO kan echter ook specifiek verwijzen naar een organisatie genaamd \"The DAO\", die in 2016 werd geconceptualiseerd op de Ethereum-blockchain.\n\nEenvoudig gezegd verwijst DAO naar bepaalde soorten organisaties die, in tegenstelling tot conventionele bedrijven, zijn gebaseerd op open source code en volledig worden beheerd door hun gemeenschappen.
