body	El amplio abanico de conocimientos del ser humano se debe a la acumulación de pequeños aportes individuales a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. Por eso, para avanzar deberíamos basar nuestro aprendizaje en lo ya conocido y descubierto, para que el edificio del saber crezca firme sobre buen basamento. Es sabido que la cal es uno de los materiales más utilizados históricamente en la construcción, pero para la mayoría suena a material obsoleto y en desuso. Tal vez lo sea la cal pura, pero no así los modernos materiales utilizados en la construcción ecológica más puntera, que están basados en cal o silicatos, materiales naturales que dejan transpirar los muros para crear habitáculos más saludables. Es decir, la cal no ha pasado de moda, sino que vuelve a utilizarse como amalgamante en morteros usados en los muros actuales y en la restauración de antiguos edificios aquejados de problemas de humedad. Además tiene multitud de aplicaciones en la industria, la agricultura o los tratamientos medioambientales. Pero aunque solo fuera por la importancia que tuvo en la vida de nuestros antepasados, merecería la pena echar la vista atrás y ver cómo se obtenía de forma artesanal en los hornos de cal o caleras, como los que pueden verse en la Sierra de Mijas. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/5xghwwj1l/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/yn3dtjn1p/Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_14.jpg' border='0' alt='Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_14'/></a> <a href='https://postimg.org/image/efpy1ba5l/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/lvp7n3xv1/Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_15.jpg' border='0' alt='Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_15'/></a> La cal se obtenía a partir del calentamiento a altas temperaturas de las rocas calizas, que abundaban en esta sierra. Las caleras se construían, lógicamente, donde abundaban estas rocas, así como los arbustos apropiados para quemar en el horno. Restos de estas antiguas caleras pueden observarse en el camino que va desde la antigua cantera de Mijas hacia la Bola de Mijas. Sorprende el buen estado de conservación de algunas de ellas, donde se puede entender perfectamente cómo se llevaba a cabo esta labor. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/tofvf51a1/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/x81t4y3zx/Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_37.jpg' border='0' alt='Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_37'/></a> <a href='https://postimg.org/image/cb5l0adop/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/pfb5cz5ql/Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_38.jpg' border='0' alt='Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_38'/></a> El horno se construía aprovechando un desnivel del terreno, pues la base debía estar bajo tierra para que tuviera más consistencia y no se perdiera el calor de las llamas, ya que era el lugar en que se hacía el fuego. Un poco más arriba, sobre un resalte de la pared del horno, se colocaban las rocas calizas formando una bóveda que soportaría todo el peso de la roca que se iba a calcinar. Esta labor requería la intervención de personas especializadas, pues no era nada fácil. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/45nj25zqh/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/eshc7l7vx/Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_36.jpg' border='0' alt='Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_36'/></a> Sobre esta bóveda, formada por los fragmentos más grandes de roca, se colocaba el resto de fragmentos calcáreos, hasta colmar la calera. La parte superior se tapaba con una pasta arcillosa, dejando respiraderos para que no se apagara el fuego, y se dejaba cocer la roca durante unos dos días. Por supuesto, el fuego debía ser alimentado con leña durante ese tiempo. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/jtoq8wxbt/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/k6g4f3flp/001.jpg' border='0' alt='001'/></a> Tras la cocción de la caliza (carbonato de calcio) se obtenía la cal viva (óxido de calcio), que es una sustancia muy cáustica. Al mezclarla con agua produce una violenta y peligrosa liberación de calor, y se convierte así en cal apagada (hidróxido de calcio), que se deja secar para producir la cal en polvo. La cal se usaba como ligante en la construcción antes de la utilización del cemento, como pintura para las construcciones de adobe, como desinfectante, en el curtido de pieles, etc. Su uso como pintura de los muros era una seña de identidad en muchos pueblos andaluces, que hoy conforman, por ejemplo, la famosa Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos, en Cádiz y Málaga. body	El amplio abanico de conocimientos del ser humano se debe a la acumulación de pequeños aportes individuales a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. Por eso, para avanzar deberíamos basar nuestro aprendizaje en lo ya conocido y descubierto, para que el edificio del saber crezca firme sobre buen basamento. Es sabido que la cal es uno de los materiales más utilizados históricamente en la construcción, pero para la mayoría suena a material obsoleto y en desuso. Tal vez lo sea la cal pura, pero no así los modernos materiales utilizados en la construcción ecológica más puntera, que están basados en cal o silicatos, materiales naturales que dejan transpirar los muros para crear habitáculos más saludables. Es decir, la cal no ha pasado de moda, sino que vuelve a utilizarse como amalgamante en morteros utilizados en los muros actuales y en la restauración de antiguos edificios aquejados de problemas de humedad. Además tiene multitud de aplicaciones en la industria, la agricultura o los tratamientos medioambientales. Pero aunque solo fuera por la importancia que tuvo en la vida de nuestros antepasados, merecería la pena echar la vista atrás y ver cómo se obtenía de forma artesanal en los hornos de cal o caleras, como los que pueden verse en la Sierra de Mijas. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/5xghwwj1l/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/yn3dtjn1p/Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_14.jpg' border='0' alt='Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_14'/></a> <a href='https://postimg.org/image/efpy1ba5l/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/lvp7n3xv1/Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_15.jpg' border='0' alt='Agosto_2013._Sierra_de_Mijas_15'/></a> La cal se obtenía a partir del calentamiento a altas temperaturas de las rocas calizas, que abundaban en esta sierra. Las caleras se construían, lógicamente, donde abundaban estas rocas, así como los arbustos apropiados para quemar en el horno. Restos de estas antiguas caleras pueden observarse en el camino que va desde la antigua cantera de Mijas hacia la Bola de Mijas. Sorprende el buen estado de conservación de algunas de ellas, donde se puede entender perfectamente cómo se llevaba a cabo esta labor. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/tofvf51a1/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/x81t4y3zx/Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_37.jpg' border='0' alt='Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_37'/></a> <a href='https://postimg.org/image/cb5l0adop/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/pfb5cz5ql/Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_38.jpg' border='0' alt='Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_38'/></a> El horno se construía aprovechando un desnivel del terreno, pues la base debía estar bajo tierra para que tuviera más consistencia y no se perdiera el calor de las llamas, ya que era el lugar en que se hacía el fuego. Un poco más arriba, sobre un resalte de la pared del horno, se colocaban las rocas calizas formando una bóveda que soportaría todo el peso de la roca que se iba a calcinar. Esta labor requería la intervención de personas especializadas, pues no era nada fácil. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/45nj25zqh/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/eshc7l7vx/Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_36.jpg' border='0' alt='Mayo_2014._Sierra_de_Mijas_Jarapalos_36'/></a> Sobre esta bóveda, formada por los fragmentos más grandes de roca, se colocaba el resto de fragmentos calcáreos, hasta colmar la calera. La parte superior se tapaba con una pasta arcillosa, dejando respiraderos para que no se apagara el fuego, y se dejaba cocer la roca durante unos dos días. Por supuesto, el fuego debía ser alimentado con leña durante ese tiempo. <a href='https://postimg.org/image/jtoq8wxbt/' target='_blank'><img src='https://s20.postimg.org/k6g4f3flp/001.jpg' border='0' alt='001'/></a> Tras la cocción de la caliza (carbonato de calcio) se obtenía la cal viva (óxido de calcio), que es una sustancia muy cáustica. Al mezclarla con agua produce una violenta y peligrosa liberación de calor, y se convierte así en cal apagada (hidróxido de calcio), que se deja secar para producir la cal en polvo. La cal se usaba como ligante en la construcción antes de la utilización del cemento, como pintura para las construcciones de adobe, como desinfectante, en el curtido de pieles, etc. Su uso como pintura de los muros es una seña de identidad en muchos pueblos andaluces, que conforman, por ejemplo, la famosa Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos, en Cádiz y Málaga. No solo en estos, sino en otros muchos, sigue utilizándose para el encalado de las paredes y de los troncos de los árboles frutales, como repelente de ciertas plagas indeseadas.
