| title | Plant-Based |
| body | I realised that this January marks the 6th year of me being completely plant-based. Over this time what it means to be 'vegan' (I prefer plant-based) has been shaped and molded from something that seemed extreme and quite inaccessible to something reasonably commonplace. With much research and new manufacturing of meat-like substitutes, even by the meat industry themselves, times are changing our approach toward food. Of course, this may not be the case for all over western culture, but defiantly with the rise of main-stream actors and celebrities talking about being vegan, has made it arguably more desirable. Before this veganism was labeled as 'hippy' and 'weird'. “what do you eat?” “where do you get your protein from?” amongst a host of other popular questions would pose the lips of the masses. A lifestyle choice always comes with connotations and going 'against the grain' causes intrigue and to a degree can cause separation. Now all major retailers are jumping on the bandwagon, especially for the annual Veganuary, that seems to be taking off bigger than ever this January. Major retailers such as M&S, boast launching their 'plant-kitchen' range can only mark the start of a mass of Vegan microwavable dinners and pre-plastic packed consumables. So now I ponder questions around morals, ethics, and waste since veganism has come into the limelight of the mainstream. First off let me tell you a little about me and my reasoning in becoming fully plant-based. It all started for me when I was a little girl. I grew up in a 'normal' single parent home with my twin brother, brought up to eat everything. I remember never being into eating meat, about the only I enjoy was sausage rolls and some other types of reconstituted meat. To be honest I hadn't made the full connect with what I was eating; it was put down in front of me if it was a piece of meat I would start picking. One day, I was about 6, I asked, “Mum, is chicken, actually a chicken' and she replied 'Yes, what did you think it was?' Shocked and feeling sad about having part of a dead animal on a plate, I started to feel uncomfortable with meat. After a while, I decided I wanted to go vegetarian. I had a friend at school also who had gone veggie and I spent quite abit of time around her house. I realised that I had to do it. My mum wasn't keen on the idea, and I began to leave the meat or stop eating. Then I told her I wanted to go vegetarian for my Christmas and birthday present, of course, I meant it, and so she let me. As a vegetarian, I enjoyed eating cheese and eggs. I found out I had a rather large milk intolerance when I was 20, and began cutting milk out, but still eating cheese. I had, had a lot of cheese as a child vegetarian, my mum wasn't sure what to feed me in order for me to get my calcium and protein. I had been toying with the idea of going completely plant-based but thought I wouldn't be able to give up milk chocolate and cheese. It was after a particularly 'cheese' heavy Christmas day in Australia, that I heard this voice in my mind telling, that it, you have to stop eating this. I couldn't ignore it, my whole body told me it was the right thing to do. So I listened. I remember having the worst cold ever in my first few days of 'giving up' animal products. It felt like a huge cleanse. Then I felt better than I had ever felt before! Energy, healthy, able to eat a larger volume of food without a horrible sluggish feeling. It brought with it, learning to cook again. I had to get my head around how to cook, what to cook and how to nourish my body to the best of my ability (quite tricky when traveling). Naturally, I came right away from processed foods, I realised that most of them contained milk or animal products and actually nutrient wise wouldn't sustain me. I become more connected to my food and what I was putting into my body and the effect it had on me. I started having the most colourful meals with bountiful vegetables. Which I realised, as a vegetarian, I had been missing. My energy levels were so high, it was like this was a secret kept from me and society. As a by-product this made me feel responsible for my food, for my health, well-being, and lifestyle. That I have power as a consumer to not buy into products I don't agree with. I wanted to share with everyone that they can feel as good as I do every day. This is what has led me to pose questions, with the rise of plant-based convenience foods, that you don't have to have a connection with the food anymore. You can have your cake and eat it, being able to grab something on the go, eating meat substitutes. You don't need to cook, you don't need to become more connected with your body through diet. I guess this just makes me feel great sadness, as its been such a joyful process for myself. Living in a world where we want to buy into everything, we get sold a dream though advertising and marketing and we tell ourselves that we are doing the right thing. We want a quick fix rather than a long term sustainable solution that takes time and effort to get the desired long-term effects. Its happened to an extent with yoga and it just feels that big corporations want to have their fingers in all the pies. They will promote body positivity or guilt-trips to sell, there are no ethics involved in money. Just remember that we can't out-source our health, we must take responsibility for our own health, well-being, and happiness. There will be no 'cancer-causing' label suck onto a packet, we must know that over-processed food are not good for our gut microbiome. We need to have a diverse mixture of foods, but ones that are alive not pumped full of antibiotics or anti-pesticides, ones that are from the earth and full of micro-organisms from the rich fertile soil. We are nature, there is no separation from that. So ask you to think, why Veganuary, why plant-based. I ask you to think before picking up the convenience and see the power you have as a consumer because veganism has shown demand and supply better than anything. |

| body | Its seemingly only when we are 'off-balance' that we ever seem to notice. When things start to feel like too much and we feel tired, drained or 'used up'. The thing is we must have been in balance before this other how would we tell the difference? For me, its the longing for 'me time', time to be alone and collect my thoughts, write, draw, start a new project or just watch a movie in bed. I know when things have gotten really bad, when my body aches all over, when coldness sets into my bones, all I want to do is curl up and rest. So now here is the pledge, the pledge to not get so carried away. Carried away with saying YES! Sometimes saying yes doesn't mean putting yourself first but instead creating a degree of compromise. Here is to learning to listen and maybe even giving a thought to how you will feel this time next week? Time is precious, and when it feels used for others, can become ever so exhausting. Heres to learning to listen, to the innermost yearnings, yearnings of the heart, yearnings of the soul, may you be heard, so in the future, you will be held. |

| title | For I am human. |
| body | For I am not the cloud, I am not the sun, I am not a raindrop falling from the sky, and I am not the environment...yet I am affected by the environment, by the landscape the people around me. I am a human, I breathe, I consume, I live. But I am not I.
I am one, I am all, all is one, all is this.
I am the creation of many different things. The thoughts I have, they project my outlook to the world around me. My behaviors and moods can shape other peoples outlooks, can cause shockwaves of energy to pulse through their bodies. I am One. The actions I take, they reflect the manifestations from within. I can use them to express my deepest dreams and desires to reflect my truth. If I choose to feel encaged, trapped by a society that I don't understand; that tells me I am here to consume and that's how I express my myself, then I will stay trapped and not reflect my highest truth. For I am All. The things I eat, they change the energy the frequency that sends vibrations to all my cells in my body. I choose to eat food that is the closest to the highest energy of them all, the sun. For this food will be the one that repairs and rebuilds my body. I respect the plants and the natural world for its delicate balance, I love the food that I eat and know that it has given its life in order for me to survive. For all is One. The place that I live. I want to surround myself in a place that respects balance. Where the people can live more harmoniously in nature without trying to contain or have control over nature. We are nature, nature is one and the same as us. Surrounding myself with people and community where there is no 'I' only one. Treating every living being, everything is alive, with respect and care. For All, is this. |

| title | Letting Go |
| body | 'Let Go' These words, in one form or another, are often laced in a yoga or meditation session. Forward-folds are very much associated with surrender, releasing, and letting go. The very action of folding brings the introspection of self, rather than the focus being outside the body, you are facing into yourself, like a mirror. What is the significance of 'letting go'? Letting go seems to have more baring to what is happening in the mind, rather than the body. The Mind-Body relationship seems to be a key factor, as there seems to be an intrinsic relationship between them. The process of letting go, contrary to most people understanding, starts in the body opposed to the mind. By working into the body and un-cluttering the mind from usual thought patterns, emotions stored in the body can begin to surface. Then the choice can come from the person whether to continue exploring these sets of emotions or not. The information has been relayed to observer. To let go is to be fully in the moment, surrendering whatever that moment may bring without any expectations and trying to not bring judgments. True joy can be found at this moment, as time just evaporates, there is just the body and breathe and the subtle observer of the mind. There is no 'I am' there just 'is'. The thing that has really begun to fascinate me is how 'letting go' in one aspect of our lives can then translate to another. For me, its 'letting go' of the material and stored emotions that don't serve me. Clutter around seems to reflect a cluttered mind, in my experience. I even think to myself, in regards to my car, a clean car equals a clean mind! This may be a little silly but on an energetic level, is it? What is the root cause of holding on (not letting go)? Holding on to what you know, what you are used to, emotions left unprocessed. This probably stems from the fear of suffering, fear of instability or just fear of the unknown. When you process or release old emotions there is a huge element of the unknown. Old wounds can be 'held' by the body and the mind, this could be for a subconscious reason. For example, it might stop you doing some form of activity, because of fear of failing or of 'not being good enough'. Processing is complex, and sometimes takes years for the person to realize the habits and ways in which they may have held onto certain aspects of themselves or lives. Allow release... No-one can do this for you, it takes time and introspective moments of clarity. It may take other things like yoga, energy work or meditation to help unearth the cause. It takes strength and courage to help surface yourself and create a new perspective. |

| title | Commercial yoga teaching |
| body | I have always struggled with the idea of accepting money for teaching yoga. The physical exchange of money placed into hand before or after a class. In a way that's where the 'middle-man' almost makes this feel nicer, it takes away that interaction of monetary value for the class. I have seen many a video from people in India, or the west, claiming that the commercialisation of yoga is wrong and has got out of hand. In a way I do agree with them, it makes me sad to see yoga changed so far away from its roots and made commercial in order to 'sell'. But let us not forgot that this is also happening in the East. For a long time people have been making an income from yoga school, drop-in sessions and meditation centers for geared up for Westerns. This really hit a booming point in the 60's with the Beetles making their journey to an Ashram to study transcendental meditation techniques in Risikesh, and also with Osho's Ashram, monetising meditation as a service with a price.
So what is so wrong about the commercialisation of Yoga & Meditation?
This is the question I've been pondering myself. We live in a world where everything has its value. Time has a value, people have value, objects have value. I think part of the accessibility of yoga is actually putting it into these modern day terms. If we lived in a moneyless society where everything was exchanged, I believe yoga or meditation classes would still be an exchange method. What I'm trying to get across is money is how we 'value' goods and services. If yoga was always free, would it be of the same value? On the other side of this coin, it does mean that these 'services' have been molded and shaped into forms that are reasonably far removed from there original meaning or state. They have to be 'packaged' in a way that makes them easy to digest and not 'too spiritual'. But even if these forms are almost unrecognisable, if they are helping people does it really matter?
Coming to acceptance..slowly!
I teach because I love teaching, I want to help people through yoga and meditation techniques to encompass all aspects of yoga not just the asana (physical postures). It has taken me a while to get to this point where I am. I'm not greedy with how I want to price my classes or only teach in certain places. I like to keep classes accessible. I realise that I wouldn't be at the point I am now with my teaching if I didn't get paid for it. It enables me to sustain myself, a roof over my head, food in my stomach. By no means do I have money to spend on fancy holidays, expensive clothing or even eating out very much. There is a massive learning curve to undertake from going from working full time to teaching full time. And actually, I have a lot more commitments with teaching. If I do go anywhere for a few days I loose income on getting my class covered. You take the good days and the bad and hopefully reach a balance, nothing is set in stone. I know that quite a few yoga/ meditation teachers are in the same position as me. There maybe a few extreme cases, like in any field, where people are making mega bucks, but I'm sure they put so much time and energy in to get where they are today. On the whole you teach yoga because you love to do so, to inspire people, to share knowledge and to help people reach an acceptance of their own. Its a labour of love and devotion. There are up's and downs just like in anyones life, we don't always float on clouds..! https://s15.postimg.cc/c5bn3nfu3/Tasadasana.png |

| body | Language is often something we take for granted. The use of it, the freedom to use how we like, a 'throwaway' comment, a swear word. Language is the main facilitator that enables us, as a species, to communicate and turn our ideas into the material.
So what about language in yoga?
Words also have many connotations to the individual receiving them, conjuring up; moods, thoughts, and feelings. Combined with our tone of voice, and body language, they become a powerful tool of self-expression. Sometimes our words can be misconstrue with an emotional response without intention in doing so. Events from the past, dual usage, can make a word have many meanings when being expressed to a group of people. As a yoga facilitator, I have to try to make sure that language doesn't become a barrier for practicing yoga, that the intention of the pose is fully realised and that no nerves are being touched. Of course, this is never 100% assured that something won't affect someone and its something I'm working on.
Different people, different meaning.
Sometimes, the words don't translate or compute the same in peoples minds. Finding that the words 'stack your shoulders' or 'lengthen the back of the neck' can create a different meaning in different bodies. I feel that isolation of body parts and expressing how one range of movement can create a different effect to another helps people have a comparison. I find when I attend a class, I need to replay what the teacher has just said in my mind again in order to then make this adjustment or movement to my own body.
Emotive words
I think its important to recognise how and when an emotional response is triggered in a student. Then how to keep a level of support yet maintain the fluidity of the class. This can also be linked to releasing emotional storage from the body. Most of the time, it seems, people want to be left alone. They may come to you after the class, but during the actual process, time needs to be taken to know what exactly is going on and come to acceptance with the emotions coming up. This, of course, may take a lot longer than an hours class!
Language off the matt.
The main thing to remember is that language in all environments is important. The way we express ourselves and emotions through words and how we can help to create clarity with our tone of voice. To be kind and show patience with our self-expression. Treating each word as a gift to create understanding. This is going to help people be able to open up more freely to take to you about their circumstances and create stronger bonds with friendships. |

Language is the main facilitator that enables us, as a species, to communicate and turn our ideas into the material.\n
