| body | There are many buzzwords being tossed around the world of church planting and/or starting a ministry. One that stands out to me is “top notch”, as in being excellent. It seems everyone wants to be “top notch” Well, I do not think Jesus was “top notch”. As I read and hear others trying to grow and build the Kingdom of God, they swoosh it all together with different models that businesses would use to grow to become a Fortune 100 company. However, as I peruse through scripture, I cannot find anywhere where I would associate Jesus as “top notch”, where “top notch” is seen as seamless, entertaining, or excellent. People want to have a “powerful” worship service. They want to be inspired, they want to be compelled. The mega-church I went to is a well-oiled machine. It has a countdown clock on the big screen to show when the worship service will start (and God forbid they start a few seconds off). They would always hit that timer on the nose.. 3… 2… 1… and BOOM the music jammed and the singing “worship” team would belt out songs and the place would be rockin’. All the rest of the service would go off without a hitch, and would end at the exact time for everyone to get out, get their kids from the nursery, or go wherever. So, as a performance goes, if I was a reporter that reviewed plays or concerts, I would write something like “Powerful, Awe Inspiring, Best show this side of the Mississippi”. People are drawn to this kind of stuff. And if one church is doing it, some other church needs to step up its game to be “more top notch”. This strive to be better than the other church down the road is completely unhealthy. The pressure everyone at these churches are under has got to be excruciating. They all are striving for the perfect little worship service that will fit all types of people. But when I really look at it all, Jesus was not about any of these things. So what is “top notch” in the Christian life? If a church is always striving to be “top notch”, does that emphasize power and strength or humility and sacrifice? I think many churches today are built on the craziest bunch of BS, built by people with Master degrees and business savvy that want to get a great performance to draw in the crowds, and not built by the people that matter … the less qualified, the addicts, the depressed (the people in the seats or pews). Give me a bunch of people getting together with no visual aides, no “top notch” sound system, no stage, no pulpit, no head pastor, but instead are sharing their lives with one another as they seek Christ, sing, laugh, and have communion as a half slab of ribs and a iced cold glass of sweet tea. Just give me a place where people seek family and relationships, and are not there for the “top notch” show. |

| body | For me the thought of a bunch of people sitting passively in comfortable seats listening to their all-mighty god (the senior pastor) up on stage, getting their spiritual fill so they can feel good for the next week gives me the shakes. I used to live that life, and after many years of trying to grow in Christ with others as the Church… no spiritual fruit was found anywhere. I have moved on and changed so much it is hard for me to relate to that system anymore. I want to relate to the people, it is the system I cannot stand. But then I read another blog entry this morning at “The Voice of One Crying Out in Suburbia” about multi-site churches, and then my allergies really kick in. Nothing against his post, I like it (and a blog many should read). It is just my own allergies kicking in about multiple church buildings…. ahh choo! Now I see multi-site churches branching out from the main headquarters that show a live video of the same pastor’s message. So in my eyes there are more people sitting passively hearing the same message, spawning more indoctrination of only one person’s message (because they ran out of seats at the main campus). I see more people that barely talk to each other (because afterwards they either need to rush out to beat the traffic, or get the seat at the restaurant, or to get home and watch the game or take a nap). At least that was my experience for 10 years at a mega-church here where I live (which by the way has 2 satellite campuses so far). So, where is all of this multi-church BS headed. Are we going to get to the point where a family wakes up on Sunday morning and turns the internet on and we just sit and watch a video of this week’s sermon from their pastor that preaches from some big castle down the street, in another state, or in another country. So, who is going to be the head of the all encompassing mega-church.. Driscoll, Piper, Mohler, Bell, ect.. I know who should be the head…. hmmmm.. how about Christ? So, why branch out to multiple sites? Why add more cost to an already costly system. What is the difference if a person and his family just flips on the internet and pulls up a sermon from the church they attend to hear the message and then go on with their day. If they would just go the internet route, maybe we could get rid of all the multi-million dollar church buildings and satellite campuses, the $50,000 a month electric bills (yes that is what the main campus I used to attend roughly pays), millions in salaries for one local main campus, landscaping costs for more flowerbeds than I can count, and thousands of dollars paid in interest on the mega-mortgages to the all-powerful banking system. Then once they have all left the buildings, maybe those same buildings could be used as healing centers for people in need. Anyone else have the same allergies? Can anyone help me with my symptoms so I can see better through my watery eyes? |

| body | Every time I drive by those flags (see previous post) at the church by my house my mind starts churning. It got me thinking again. And, after reading Jeremy’s post today at Till He Comes I wanted to post something that was bugging me. Many Christians have come to think that the bible is like everything else in their life. They think it is something to master and something they can own. The more Christians know about the bible, the more power they hope to gain. The more verses they can quote, the closer to God they hope to be. The bible is their prop and their flag. They wave it around and make sure that it is seen by all. They highlight it and talk about it and make wild claims about its truth and fight over it and win with it and boast about how they believe every word of it. It is their way and their truth and their life. Behold, the sacred battle cry for many Christians: “The Word of the Lord is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” However, is this verse even about the bible? Or could it be about Christ, whom they serve, and whose spirit they are called to carry in their heart. It is only He who is their way and their truth and their life. I feel many Christians use the bible as a weapon, when it should be a tool for their life finding Christ. My prayer is for Christians to stop worshipping the bible and start worshipping what the bible was written for in the first place, from beginning to end … JESUS! What are your thoughts? I would love to hear them, because you know as well as I do, I could be wrong in my interpretation:) |

| body | Let me say first thing… the word “Christian” was never intended to be used as an adjective… so, STOP using it that way! For the life of me I cannot understand why many people continue to use the word “Christian” in the form of an adjective. We have “Christian” bookstores, we have “Christian” music, and we have “Christian” businesses. One of the biggest piles of BS that floats around is the “Christian” business directory. I just saw our latest and greatest for the Louisville area. I guess you can advertise in it if you are a “Christian” business owner. What does that mean? Should we only do business with so-called “Christian” businesses? Wow, if that is not divisive, I do not know what is. It is basically forming an us versus them mentality. The way this could be seen is that if a Jew owns a business, you would not want to buy anything from them because they could rob you blind, or if an atheist makes great doughnuts you could go to hell for eating a cream-filled. Gimme a break. One example in the directory is a “Christian” home repair company with a big cross as their symbol. So, their company logo is a form of execution? That is scary:) . Does this mean they only repair the homes of Christ followers, or that the houses themselves have made a faith decision for Christ? When it is all said and done, a Christian who runs a home repair business is not more qualified because of his faith, but in his experience, and training. I would hope they would have good business ethics, but it definitely does not mean they are supernatural to drive nails straighter, or get painting done in less time. Hope you are enjoying my “Christian” blog. |

| body | Ha.. it is not about masturbation, admit it, you thought that first, right? Well, it is not about your member, it is about being a member. Yes, the “M” word is membership. I got into a discussion about church “membership” over the weekend. Nothing bad, just a little blood. Here is my question, and I am sure others out there will have some good info or links to share, so why is it that a non-member that attends the same church you do, but is part of The Body of Christ, cannot lead anyone else within the community he or she attends? Here is one of many real life examples I will share with you. Maybe this will help shed some light on what I am trying to convey. First a liitle background: I attended a non-denominational mega-church for over 10 years where I was a “member”. 5 years into attending, I took a 2-year discipleship class there, and then taught the same class as a leader for another 2 years. I was asked to be the lead pastor of my ABF (adult bible fellowship) class when the leader of that class was moving into a different role (a class size of over 50 couples) – but I turned it down knowing my heart was not there. I also taught prison inmates with a group from the church I attended at a local prison for over 5 years on Thursday nights. You want to see Christ, go to prison (as a guest of course). Here is my dilemma and why I struggle with church membership as a necessity, and why I think it is divisive. As I was a member at my local mega-church, everyone there was fine with me teaching, loving, helping, and volunteering in many different roles (as long as I looked and acted exactly like them). After a year of personal prayer and a lot of scripture studying I decided to leave the church system I was a part of to start meeting outside the walls with other believers in Christ. In other words I went “post-institutional”… or mental to some people :) I thought about the whole membership thing and decided that I did not need to hold a membership there anymore, so I called to drop my membership (which is another whacked out bunch of BS for another time). I guess I could have kept my membership at that church building and just not attend (which many people do, but doesn’t that mess up their number of “giving units”:) ). I still had many friends and fellow believers I talked to and met with afterwards (since we are all in the same family of Christ). Even though I left gathering with them on a regular basis after 10 years, (I met with them in other places at other times outside the facility), by dropping the membership, it was like I was an immediate outsider. I was no longer one of “them”. Although I am the same person, and I still love Christ as my Lord and Savior, I could no longer go into the prison with the same group to teach the prisoners along side my fellow believers any more. I was thrown to the wilderness. This is where I ask why? Am I not to represent Christ wherever I and/or we go regardless of where a “membership” lies? I feel we are all members of His actual Body … not set by any human rules or by-laws. This is where and why I feel a “membership” promotes divisiveness. All of the sudden I was looked at as a pagan or an outsider or an unbeliever and not able to serve with the same people I served with in prison for over 5 years. Was it because I had a few doctrinal differences? (which should not matter). We can have doctrinal differences and still be in The Body. (i.e. old earth, young earth, mode of baptism, Calvin or Armenian, ect.). I do not think gathering as a group inside a church building is wrong, but I do think shunning another believer because he or she has a slight doctrinal difference is wrong. These types of doctrinal differences are second order realities, where we need to agree to disagree in love. The first order reality is that of Christ Himself, this is where we should all agree (birth, death, and resurrection) to where we are all members of His Incredible Church. Thanks for letting me vent… |

"body": "Ha.. it is not about masturbation, admit it, you thought that first, right?\n\nWell, it is not about your member, it is about being a member. Yes, the “M” word is membership. I got into a discussion about church “membership” over the weekend. Nothing bad, just a little blood. \n\nHere is my question, and I am sure others out there will have some good info or links to share, so why is it that a non-member that attends the same church you do, but is part of The Body of Christ, cannot lead anyone else within the community he or she attends?\n\nHere is one of many real life examples I will share with you. Maybe this will help shed some light on what I am trying to convey.\n\nFirst a liitle background: I attended a non-denominational mega-church for over 10 years where I was a “member”. \n\nHere is my dilemma and why I struggle with church membership as a necessity, and why I think it is divisive.\n\nAs I was a member at my local mega-church, everyone there was fine with me teaching, loving, helping, and volunteering in many different roles (as long as I looked and acted exactly like them). After a year of personal prayer and a lot of scripture studying I decided to leave the church system I was a part of to start meeting outside the walls with other believers in Christ. In other words I went “post-institutional”… or mental to some people :) \n\nI thought about the whole membership thing and decided that I did not need to hold a membership there anymore, so I called to drop my membership (which is another whacked out bunch of BS for another time). I guess I could have kept my membership at that church building and just not attend (which many people do, but doesn’t that mess up their number of “giving units”:) ). I still had many friends and fellow believers I talked to and met with afterwards (since we are all in the same family of Christ). | body | It is important to understand, I think, the distinction between church, a legal and transient institution, and Church, an eternal 'thing' for a lack of a better word. You can be a member of any church but that in and of itself doesn't guarantee membership in His Church, in my opinion. I suppose one can merely claim this or that, but fruits follow those who believe as evidence that your faith pleases God. I would even add that a very specific list of fruits follow those who believe. The religion of Heaven wasn't revealed to man to foster loyalty to man and its creations, but to connect man back to God as was his condition before the fall. If the vehicle of a church helps ones journey back to Gods presence, then every step should be taken to benefit from it. To be clear, it is possible to practice church like activities outside of any institutional hierarchy. It is necessary to gather together in His name so we can bear one another burdens and speak freely about the concerns of our souls. I think we all can be part of the same Church. But at present, in my view at least, there are way too many divisions between the christian world to come together and add to the table what we have to offer. Just some quick thoughts. |

| body | You are absolutely right that Jesus single new commandment was that we are to love one another. Part of that love is getting everyone the information necessary to achieve eternal life - that means first believing and then obeying because of that belief. These are the essential things that Jesus Himself requires of us: in His own words (John 3:16-20) > For God so **loved the world** that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For **God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world**, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but **whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.** This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because **their deeds were evil.** Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. So, clearly, Jesus tells us that there are deeds that are evil. That would include my own heterosexual desire to mate with half the world's population. Somebody has to communicate to everyone the things that offend God. Jesus tasked his disciples with the following Great Commission: > ,,,go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and **teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.** So obedience is important. This included obeying the above command. So when a disciple of Jesus attempts to teach others to obey all that Jesus commanded them, they go forth and do that, not out of hate, but out of obedience and love. Not loving someone is not caring enough to take on the ridicule and scorn that comes from those who love the darkness in order to get them the information that they need to have eternal life. |

| body | Well, as long "two or more are gathered in His name" you automatically have a Church. Then you can agree to do just about anything together you like. You can pick some or all of these things on your list, or turn it into a fellowship meeting with games, or bluegrass music, or boy scouts, or mud wrestling for that matter. But most Church meetings have a lot on your list for these reasons: **No “church” service** - In general, church services are put together to accomplish things that Jesus and the apostles did together. Having some kind of structure is convenient when your group gets large and many people work together to organize the gathering. **No singing, unless someone is led to want to share** The apostles sang hymns together and so did the first churches. It kind of became a tradition that goes clear back to King David. "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord" is a form of worship or praise. **No preaching** People often gather together in church to learn the details of their faith. A 15-minute sermon is kind of a mini-dose for the least common denominator of the general membership. You really need as many contact hours per week as you would for a college course - if you are serious. **No teaching, unless a person wants to share** See above. Since what you believe is critically important, that needs to get passed on in a training program of some kind. **No asking for money** If you do form an organization with common goals and a meeting place, you need to cover your expenses. Even when friends go out for beers they often chip into a common pot to cover the bill. **No paid pastor or employees** Not needed at all, if you can get volunteers. If you want someone to spend full time meeting the spiritual needs of the group, doing marriages and funerals and being there for counseling etc. then they need to earn a living somehow. **No doctrinal statements** These are simply boiling down what the Bible teaches so that people can know what the group professes to believe. Belief in that content is in fact the whole reason for having such a group in the first place. **No “What we Believe” statements** That's the same as above for the same reasons. **No programs, no classes** Not much of a reason to meet if you have no goals as a group and nothing to share with new members. But there's nothing wrong with doing it your way either. :o) |

| body | I am starting to break out in hives.. my allergic reaction to bullshit is kicking in. There is an op/ed piece in the Wall Street Journal written by Albert Mohler about homosexuality. Here is the link so you can read it. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304584004576416284144069702.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_LEADTop#articleTabs%3Darticle Man, the religious elite just do not understand the book in which they read and preach. Basically, this article is saying that we as followers of Christ need to go out and change the behavior of everybody that does not fit our certain ideals. Man does that piss me off. You read it, is that what you get out of it? Here is my comment to this article (for what is worth, which is not much) … As followers of Christ (His Church), we should stop looking at homosexuality as an “us versus them” mentality. If we do something “to” them or “for” them it makes us look better than them and we are here to help them be like us. Like us? Thats is a joke.. we are all sinners. Instead why do we not have a “with them” mentality. Isn’t it about the “one anothers”. Love and encourage one other. Be “with” them in their lives and stop being so judgmental of their lifestyle. Show them who Christ is by being His Hands and His Feet and together we all will show God to the world. Do not get me wrong. I personally believe a gay lifestyle is sinful. However, Our goal as Christ-followers (His Church) is not to try to jam everyone into whatever our behavioral ideals might be, but to lovingly help people reconnect with God. That is what I mean by being “with” them. I think this to be true in all types of relationships, but we must be deliberate in building a strong bond with the gay community as it has been so misunderstood by the conservative religious elite community (the system with in the “houses of worship”). If we simply focus on loving gay people with the goal of helping each other nurture healthy relationships with God (being with them in community with Christ as the head…that is what we all want, right?), we can relax and trust that God will lead each of us as His Church down whatever path is right for Him. I cannot remember who said this, but it was along the lines of “The Holy Spirit’s job is to convict, It is God’s job to judge, and our job as follower of Him to love.” So I guess we love “with” each other, because it is not our job to change them. This subject is definitely a toughie!!!! |

| body | The reason I like using the word Church with a big C only is because I wonder if we could ever just be together with Christ as the head of his Church instead of having all these divisive little c churches all over the place. Can there ever be a community with… No “church” service No singing, unless someone is led to want to share No preaching No teaching, unless a person wants to share No asking for money No paid pastor or employees No doctrinal statements No “What we Believe” statements No programs, no classes _______ Church to me is just living life together in community with one another being the hands and feet of Christ. (You know Christ has no other way to have others see Him then through us) Can we help others physically, spiritually, and financially without all the above BS. Lets have a meal, go to a ball game, cry, laugh, and grow together in Him so together we can show the Allness of God (Christ) to the world. By the way… where is everyone? It seems like I am wandering this post-institutional wilderness all by myself? |

| body | In my “about” page I mention the “institutional church”. Watch out those can be bad words when used on the outside. Those words can take on many different meanings, and can be based on a person’s life experience, or even from a definition a certain pastor or author conjures up. I personally think there is no way we could ever define Church as God created. But, if you held a gun to my head and made me define it, I would simply define the “institutional church” as any form of church (small c) that man tries to set up in an effort to create what God has already created. The Body of Christ, or the Church (big C), just IS – and I cannot define what IS is. His followers are His Church – the actual Body of Christ. So in some form or fashion (and there is no RIGHT way), we are His hands, we are His feet. God has no other way for Him (Christ) to be seen in the world except through His Bride, the Church. I read a lot, and I see many times authors of blogs or books mention church (little c), and Church (big C) as I did above as an example. So here is my first question to start this blog… Should we as His followers ever use the term church (little c) when talking about the Bride of Christ? Isn’t the Church always a Big C? I think if we are called to be unified in Christ, we should always use the term Church no matter the circumstances. I see the use of a small c as being divisive. One person has his church, and another has their church, but in reality should we not all be part of the same Church? Thoughts? |
