| body | The family of late artist Avicii has indicated that his death at 28 may have been intentional, saying Thursday that he "could not go on any longer." European outlets report that Tim Bergling, known worldwide as hitmaker Avicii, left a note upon his April 20 death, but this was not explicitly stated by the family. "Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions,” the Bergling family says in a new statement translated from Swedish. "He really struggled with thoughts about meaning, life, happiness. He could not go on any longer." When Avicii stopped touring in 2016 due to health issues related to excessive drinking, "he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most — music," the statement continues. "Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight." The family also notes that he was an "over-achieving perfectionist" who struggled to handle the extreme stress tied to his massively successful career. In death, "he wanted to find peace," the statement reads. "Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive." News of Avicii's sudden death in Muscat, Oman rocked the music industry and his fans around the world. |

| body | Minutes after pitching in the team's loss on Friday night against the Houston Astros at home in Chicago, Chicago White Sox right-handed pitcher Danny Farquhar suffered a ruptured aneurysm that cause a brain hemorrhage while still in the dugout. Farquhar had just gotten done throwing fifteen pitches in the sixth inning of the White Sox game when, seemingly out of nowhere, he lost consciousness in the dugout. White Sox medical staff and EMTs rushed to the dugout to administer aid, and they quickly got him to the hospital. Worse yet, though, Farquhar is currently fighting for his life in the hospital, as he is in stable but critical condition in the ICU at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. A seven-year veteran of the Major Leagues, the 31-year-old Farquhar has gotten close to teammates in Chicago, like pitcher James Shields, who reacted to the horrifying moment today (below): "It crushes us in this clubhouse. Nothing really matters baseball-wise when something like that happens. When you see one of your brothers go down like that it's not very fun to watch. He's such a resilient human being and we're praying for him and hope everything goes well. All that matters is family and life. He's a brother of ours and a great teammate. As of right now it's not looking great. He's definitely stable from what we hear. But this kid has a long ways to go. He's fighting." Another pitcher, teammate Hector Santiago, noted that most of the team was thinking of Farquhar rather than their upcoming game tonight in Chicago (below): "We're more worried about what's going on with him and his family than this game right now." Tough, tough situation for his teammates — but even more importantly, it's a truly life-threatening situation for Farquhar himself. Our thoughts and prayers are with Danny and his friends, family, loved ones, and teammates right now. |

| body | Why spend your precious calories drinking a sugar-loaded drinks when instead you could be whittling down your waistline by drinking detoxifying teas? Not only are herbal teas good for you, but they taste good too! I put together a list of 7 Best Detox Teas for a Flatter Belly because with summer coming up, we could all use more help in that department. This is an easy way to be good to your body and add a variety of tasting drinks to your day. Drinking tea that detoxifies the system isn’t enough to lose a substantial amount of weight, but by trading your high calorie sugary drinks for some delicious tasting teas – you will start a new habit that will help speed up the process. What all these teas have in common, is that they all help detoxify your liver. The liver’s primary duty is to process everything you eat and drink and cleans the blood. Your liver is one of the hardest working organs in your body, so make sure you take care of it! “I put a hibiscus flower in every cup of tea. It’s sweet, sexy, and cleansing. – Mario Batali I always add a couple drops of liquid stevia to my tea, along with a healthy creamer for even more deliciousness. Here are the 7 Best Detox Teas to try for a Flatter Belly: 1) Jasmine Green Tea. We all know that drinking green tea is good for you, but by adding Jasmine to green tea – it makes the taste simply divine. This is my favorite green tea. Here are some things you might not know about green tea: It increases metabolism. Enough said. If that doesn’t make you want to drink down a few mugs of this everyday – then I don’t know what will. Helps regulate glucose levels. This can help you prevent spikes in your insulin and preventing of fat storage. Reduces the bad cholesterol in the blood. 2) Peppermint Tea. This is a wonderful tea to drink because it tastes divine in addition to cleansing qualities. Peppermint aids in digestion and prevents bloating. It also helps reduce stress…now who wouldn’t be happy with that? Peppermint tea also helps boost the immune system. Helps contain cravings. 3) Chamomile Tea. Not only does Chamomile Tea help you sleep, but it also helps with stress. It aids in liver detoxification. Helps move things along in the intestines. Offers laxative properties. 4) Dandelion Tea. This tea will help aid with the cleansing of your liver. Helps remove toxins. Reestablish hydration. Electrolyte balance. Helps fight diabetes. 5) Lemon and Ginger Tea. I make my own homemade lemon and ginger tea. You can find the recipe here. Assists in normalizing sugar levels. Improves fat absorption. Helps prevent inflammation. Makes your skin smooth and beautiful. 6) Turmeric Tea. We all know that turmeric reduces inflammation, but did you know it can assist with the breakdown of fats? | body | Embrace Hygge at Work: Turn Your Office Into a Cozy Place will teach you how to incorporate the hygge concept wherever you go. Work can sometimes feel like a not-so-hygge place, but by making a few changes, you can transform your working area. “The perfect antidote to dark, cold and creepy is light, warm and cozy.” – Candice Olson Hygge (pronounced ‘hue-gah’) is a Danish concept that is the art of creating intimacy with your home, yourself and friends. There are homes you walk into that you feel an instant warmth, and then there are others that leave you cold. Adding hygge elements to the workplace will help create that cozy environment you crave. Since we spend so many of our waking hours working, why not make the most out of it by thoughtfully enhancing your experience there? Here are the Embrace Hygge at Work: Turn Your Office Into a Cozy Place Ideas: 1) Beverage station. You drink beverages throughout the day, why not add rich elements like loose-leaf tea, homemade hot cocoa mix, and marshmallows, sun-brewed iced herbal tea, and fruit-infused water part of your experience? Skip the plain water and give your tastebuds a treat with simple beverages that make them happy. Keep an electric tea kettle to make hot tea in minutes. Keeping grandma’s teacup and saucer on your desk will remind you of simpler times and warm memories 2) Natural elements. Bring nature indoors with a terrarium, succulents, driftwood, and a bowl of shells or pebbles. As a bonus for hygge-ness, you can place little reminders on your desk like a stone from your lake cabin or a shell from your last trip to Hawaii. 3) Coziness. Temperatures in offices change with the wind. Sometimes you’re too cold, and sometimes you’re too warm. Be prepared with items such a poncho or throw for when you feel a chill or a small desktop fan when it’s too warm. If you have 4) Holiday celebration. Honor the holidays by celebrating each one with decor for your cubicle or office. Simply adding a strand of garland will cheer your spirits. 5) Office supplies. There’s no rule that says you have to use cheap pens to work. I used to put up with writing with any old pen that I found, but I finally decided that I was worthy of writing with smooth pens that I love. You can also bring in special notebooks or planners to help create an office space that’s more ‘you.’ For a bit of whimsy, why not buy fun file folders like these blank ones that will smile at you every time you reach for them? 6) Pause. You’re entitled to lunch after an eight-hour shift, why not make the most of it? Nourish your body with a homemade lunch from home. I love the concept of a bento box, so make sure your taste buds are delighted with a variety of flavors that include sweet, salty, sour and savory. Make sure you have a cool lunch box that either delights you or is functional. Who says you have to be chained to your desk while you eat your lunch? Get outdoors and enjoy your break outside if you’re able to. By removing yourself from your office, you know there won’t be any interruptions. Listening to podcasts during lunch will get you motivated to accomplish your big goals. You could also bring knitting or a novel to work and enjoy your break with something pleasurable. 7) Lighting. Bad lighting doesn’t have to happen. Adding an antique desk lamp will warm up any office, and flickering battery-operated candles can add that cozy element you crave. 8) Seasonal celebration. Every season comes bearing gifts. Make sure you celebrate those offerings by bringing some of the bounties to your workplace. Spring: Arrange tulips or daffodils in a vase. Strawberries, a fresh spinach salad or marinated asparagus, could be added to your lunch box. |

| body | Commuting. Bosses. Co-workers. No personal time. These are just a few of the reasons why people want to start his or her own business. Deciding on what type of business to start is the hard part. You came to the right place – listed below are some fun creative business ideas to get you started on a career you’ll love. “Be undeniably good. No marketing effort or social media buzzword can be a substitute for that.” – Anthony Volodkin, founder of HypeMachine 12 Creative Business Ideas You Can Steal: 1) Vintage Rental Decor for Weddings. I know someone who owned an antique store. As a side business, she rented out her vintage and antique items to weddings. Her wedding rental business grew so big, she decided to focus on it full-time. She had antique buffets, vanities, dishes, serving pieces and display pieces. You’ll need to have storage for the furniture and items and a truck to deliver everything. Oh yes, and you’ll have to go shopping for the items you’ll be renting – torture, I know. 2) Farmer. I can see your eyes rolling. What’s so unusual about being a farmer? It’s when you choose a niche for yourself that you become a rockstar. How about growing only herbs? What about becoming the expert in garlic like someone I met? I know someone who specializes chocolate-colored flowers and makes a living at it. There is someone who lives near me that specializes in native plants to the area. How about only growing heirloom plants? The choices are endless. If you have that green thumb, then this might be the career for you. 3) Food Cart Owner. Again, stop with the eyes. I see you. Yes, the big thing right now is owning a food cart. But…what you may not know is how some food cart owners are so dialed down to a specialty that they are making a killing. How about a food cart that sells only popsicles? Just grilled cheese sandwiches? Coffee & donuts? What about selling only specialty fries? The possibilities are endless and the investment is way less than a restaurant to test out your concept. 4) Garden Designer. Now on this one, I agree with you. It’s not that offbeat unless you make it so. Yes, there are people who design lovely gardens. What’s missing is someone who shows people how to grow their own food at home. You can charge a consultation fee to look at his or her garden space and design a food garden that takes advantage of the sun, space and soil. You could also teach homeowners to grow their food vertically, introduce aquaponics to their gardening strategies and teach them how become a certified organic gardener. 5) Photographer. I’m also nodding my head that this one is pretty common. So let’s make your profession a bit more uncommon. How about becoming a wedding photographer that specializes in offbeat weddings? Take photographs for the real estate market. How about focusing on doing headshots for businesses? You could focus on just photographing pets. The possibilities are endless. Just come up with a unique look to your pictures and advertise your one-of-a-kind skill. 6) Blog/Website Flipper. What on earth is a blog flipper? Ever hear of a couple named Chip and Joanna Gaines? They have a show called Fixer Upper on HGTV. If you never heard of them, they take some of the worst houses in good neighborhoods and transform them into works of art. So what does this have to do with being a blog or web site flipper? It’s the same principle. You look for abandoned blogs that are littering the internet highway and offer to buy one. Then you use your internet skills and set up social media channels and write new copy. Once you build up readership, you sell it to someone for quite a bit more than you paid for it that doesn’t want to start a blog or web site from scratch. You will then have your own Magnolia Farms…only you don’t have swing a hammer. 7) Life Organizer. If you’re an organized person, why not get paid for it? You can organize people’s homes, computer or even life. Everyone could use a little help in getting things streamlined so they have time to do what they actually want to do. My sister met someone in California that would reorganize the house for free and her payment would be the leftover unwanted items that created clutter. She would then sell those items and that’s how she made her money. She made a really good living doing that and it was a creative way to get paid. You could also focus on helping small businesses go the next level by increasing their productivity through organization. 8) Candy Maker. This is also an over saturated market. It is unless you specialize in butterscotch perhaps? How about chili flavored candy? What about creating unusual candy sculptures for parties? How about recreating only old-fashioned candy? You could also use antique candy molds to make them. How about making handmade candy wreaths for seasonal decor? You could create a blog offering recipes through the decades or how about a blog recreating candy from different countries? Your new business objective would be to introduce more sweetness in others lives. How cool is that? 9) Family Historian. If you have a knack for writing and love to talk to people, than this might be a great business for you. All too often someone we are close to dies and they take with them stories that would benefit future generations. What a wonderful way to earn a living by documenting history for a family! Each person holds a vault of life lessons just waiting to be revealed to the world and you could be the person that mines those moments. 10) Furniture Refinisher. I just me someone who makes a living refinishing furniture. He finds furniture at garage sales and thrift stores and gives them a new life. He specializes in creating unusual painted pieces that people are ordering. I’m assuming he makes pretty good money because he and his wife just bought a house in a very nice neighborhood. 11) Product Distributor. Do you know anyone that wouldn’t love to have more energy? I think most of us have exhausting lives. I’m in the business of helping people regain the energy they once had. My friend that got me started in the company I use had lost everything in the market crash of 2008. She had to reinvent her life and she decided to help people regain their health. Learn more about her story here. She is now on her way to making seven figures and she absolutely loves her job. The great thing about this business model is that you don’t have to have to invest in an inventory, nor do you have to ship any products. You can spend all your time sharing the business. 12) Card Maker. If you are good at graphic design or photography, creating your own greeting card line might be a great new business for you. Everyone loves to get something in the mail and that will never go out of style. The key to doing well in this market is to create a niche that hasn’t been overdone yet. You could create a greeting card company that just creates cards that are sent from the dog or cat. How about a line that specializes in cards to bridesmaids and the grooms? Now that you can run an online business from home, there is no need for your cards to be in stores for people to find you and the sky is the limit. |

| body | The very impacting blockchain technology is being proposed and recommended by South Korea to be used by firms in their services while investing in the platforms. Based on a report released by Korea Joongang Daily – the South Korea Financial Services Commission has scheduled introductions of new regulations for protecting information of various enterprises users with blockchain. Choi Jong-ku – FSC Chairman, stated that a friendly approach towards blockchain platforms is being proposed to be made with the aim to hoist up local jobs in the particular market: “The players in the financial service market are becoming more diverse, with new companies entering, and the competition in the financial market is becoming fiercer. Fintech is an area that requires new technologies, and it will solve the youth job problem by increasing job positions for young people.” An accessible payment system called app-to-app is planned to be approved by the gov which gives the opportunity to users to buy from the seller through the particular app, in which case fees would be lower on card network providers or credit card companies. One of the most important mobile carriers in the Asian country, Korea Telecom (KT), said on Tuesday that it is planning to use blockchain technology in order to provide security to their new telecommunications system. According to the firm, individuals will be rewarded for using their data, instead of other companies. On the case, the one in lead of the company’s blockchain centre added: “By using blockchain technologies, data will be secured from hackers as transmitted through the unforgeable blockchain network and users will be transmitting their own data with one another based on trust with no need to rely on third-party OTT businesses.” Opening up and embracing blockchain technology by South Korea, is a way that most important companies are choosing all around the globe. Which is way it is not only about staying in track as it has become a very challenging race now. |

| body | It’s no secret that coconut oil can do some pretty amazing things: from replacing a pricier moisturizer to speeding up the healing process on a surface wound. But some of the tips we’ve heard sound too good to be true — like coconut oil as sunscreen ... really? So TODAY teamed up with a few experts to get the scoop on what the oil really can do, and which tips are, well, snake oil. Here's the scoop on 10 common claims: 1. Coconut oil can tame frizz. True! This trick definitely works, says hair stylist and New York City salon owner Nunzio Saviano. Rub coconut oil (which goes for around $10 on Amazon) in your palms to warm it up, and then simply massage it into strands. Wash it out a few hours later. “The molecules in coconut oil are small enough so it penetrates the hair shaft,” he explained. “It locks the moisture in. That’s what keeps the hair nice and healthy looking. When your hair is dehydrated, that’s when you get flyaways and it gets really frizzy.” 2. You can use coconut oil as sunscreen. False. Please don’t do this, warns celebrity dermatologist Doris Day. Instead get one of the top recommended sunscreens from Consumer Reports to protect your skin. “It may give some sun protection benefits, but it does not replace your need for sunscreen,” Day said. “I wouldn’t risk it.” 3. Coconut oil can replace your moisturizer. Coconut oil is very moisturizing and safe to use, even on the face, for all skin types, Day said. “Even if you have oily skin, if you put on a thin layer it could help control the oil,” she added. 4. You’ll lose weight if you cook with coconut oil. You might, but nutritionist Dana James reminds us it’s not that easy. Coconut oil has about the same amount of calories and fat — albeit different types of fats — compared to other oils like olive, she said. “Weight loss can be complex, and simply adding coconut oil into the diet without changing anything else isn’t going to be enough,” James said. But, she added that the high level of saturated fats in coconut oil can help suppress the appetite. James also cleared up the difference between solid and liquid coconut oils, explaining that they’re both the same thing, but that pure coconut oil turns to liquid at a certain temperature, around 75 degrees. 5. Coconut oil can help heal wounds. Believe it or not, this is true. Day explained that it’s the coconut oil’s antibacterial properties that help cuts and scrapes heal faster. 6. You can use coconut oil as makeup remover. Yes, coconut oil can even help remove stubborn eye makeup — but most oils can do this, Day points out. Just be careful not to get it in your eyes. 7. You can use coconut oil as natural deodorant. Sure, if you don’t mind smelling like coconut! “It kills off bacteria and yeast, and that’s what causes odor,” Day said. But Day points out that while coconut oil might be OK as a deodorant, it definitely doesn’t work as an antiperspirant. RELATED: 50 ways to use coconut oil around your house 8. Coconut oil will get rid of stretch marks. Nope, sorry. “I wish, but no,” Day said. “Stretch marks come from a loss of ground substance in the skin, and you can’t replace that.9. Swirling coconut oil in your mouth will whiten your teeth. Dentist Zack Zaibak of Chicago confirms this is true, adding that swirling coconut oil in your mouth for about fifteen minutes — also known as oil-pulling — can also remove bacteria and help improve conditions like gingivitis. “It’s a good addition to dentistry,” he said. “There’s not much testing on this, but I haven’t seen any negativity, from a dentist’s perspective.” 10. Cooking with coconut oil will make everything taste like coconut. False. Coconut oil is actually a mild, light option and you probably won’t detect the fruit in most recipes. Celebrity chef Candice Kumai says it works best cooking with high heat, and tastes especially great when cooking Thai and Indian food. |

| body | Carson Daly remembers being hit with his first panic attack back when he hosted the popular MTV show “Total Request Live.” He was minutes from going on air when anxiety seized him. “I had a hard time breathing. I was terrified for no apparent reason,” he recalled. Earlier this week, Carson revealed he has generalized anxiety disorder, which means he is gripped by excessive feelings of fear and worry. He opened up about struggling with the disorder to help shed the stigma that surrounds mental illness, especially for men who are often encouraged by society to tamp down their emotions and problems. Carson said his anxiety started as a child. “I was a worrywart kid. I was always worrying,” he said. “My father died when I was 5. I had an ulcer when I was in high school. I've been nervous my whole life.” It worsened after he moved from his native California for a job at MTV. “I moved to New York and my life changed overnight,” he said. “At times I feel like there's a saber-tooth tiger right here and it's going to kill me attack me and bite my head off. I’m scared as if that's really happening,” he said. “You feel like you’re dying.” After one anxiety attack, he went to the hospital to make sure the tightness gripping his body wasn’t from a heart attack. “People think, ‘Oh, he has anxiety. High pressure life. You know, you’re on television.’ It has nothing to do with that,” he said. Carson, during a TRL moment with fans. TODAY Carson said panic can grip him even during moments when most people would feel relaxed. “I've had heightened anxiety and mild panic attacks at the playground with my own children and wife there. The feeling was so gripping and so terrifying that literally I had to leave and excuse myself,” he said. Carson said part of the reason he’s talking about his anxiety is to help explain that the disorder doesn’t come with an easy fix. “We live in that world where it's like, ‘What did he take? I'll take that too.’ It's not that simple,” he said. Carson said he was "a worrywart kid" who developed an ulcer in high school. TODAY For Carson, part of the solution came after sharing his story with a friend who also had anxiety and let him know it was an actual disorder for which he could get treatment. “I opted for a cognitive therapist, somebody who teaches you about anxiety, the model of it, and offers you tools on how to kind of work through it,” he said. “Muscle retention relaxation really helps me.” That technique can involve something as simple as clinching his fists enough to flex his arm muscles. That’s enough to help him feel “an ocean of relaxation” wash over him. Other techniques that can help anxiety include exercise and yoga. “This is the way I was born. This is the way I was hardwired. This is the downside the way God made me and there's a tremendous upside as well,” he said. Carson believes his anxiety makes him more sensitive. Music moves him physically, and euphoric moments with his family resonate deeply. "That's the flip side to the anxiety,” he said. “I don't walk around every single day a nervous wreck. I don't want people to think, ‘Oh, are you okay? Are you freaking out?’ No, I'm good.” That doesn’t mean the heightened nervousness ever goes away. “If you ever watch ‘The Voice’ live on NBC — watch on a Monday or Tuesday night, I’m never still,” he said. “It's the same thing with the TODAY Show in the morning. Some days I'm just a little anxious." But Carson said he’s fine with it. “I really wear the way I am like a badge of honor. This is who I am and I’m proud of it," he said. Carson hopes his openness about anxiety will encourage other people who are struggling to seek help. "People are so afraid about what other people think of you. I wish people could break down that wall, too," he said. "I guarantee you, everybody has got something." |

| body | The classic Anglo-Asian soup with a twist, given added body and a hint of luxury with beef and noodles Thomasina Miers’ mulligatawny with beef and noodles. I have been slurping soup like crazy this year: thick ones with root veg, fast, simple broths or more drawn-out affairs with noodles or rice. We recently put chicken pozole, a popular Mexican soupy stew, on the menu. It’s stained brick-red by mild chillies and enlivened with lime and shredded raw veg, and it made me crave a version with Asian flavours. Mulligatawny with beef and noodles I rested on mulligatawny soup – not a classic one, because I’ve added noodles for body and a little beef for luxury, but I love it, and hope you will, too. Prep 10 min Cook 40 min Serves 4 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large red onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 1 large carrot, peeled and finely chopped Salt and black pepper 1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated 3 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 2 tsp basmati rice 2 tsp coriander seeds1 tsp fennel seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp black peppercorns ½ tsp turmeric 1 green chilli, finely chopped 200g tinned chopped tomatoes (half a can) 750ml beef stock 1 small cinnamon stick 400ml tin coconut milk Juice of 2 limes 250g beef fillet, cut into fine slivers 200g flat rice noodles 1 large handful coriander leaves, roughly chopped, to serve Busy week? Sign up for Weekend Reading Read more Heat a large, deep casserole and, when hot, add the oil and turn down to a medium flame. Add the onion, celery and carrot, season generously, then sweat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Add the ginger and garlic, and cook, stirring, until soft – about five minutes. Meanwhile, heat a small dry frying pan, gently toast the rice and the coriander, fennel and cumin spice seeds for two to three minutes, until fragrant, then take off the heat. Once cool, mix with the peppercorns and grind to a fine powder (use a spice grinder or pestle and mortar). Stir into the onions et al, add the turmeric and chilli, and cook for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes, stock and cinnamon, and leave to simmer for 20 minutes, so the flavours develop. Tip in the coconut milk, bring up to heat, then squeeze in the lime juice and season the soup to taste. When you’re ready to eat, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions, drain and transfer to soup bowls. Top with the strips of raw beef and pour on the hot soup. Scatter over the fresh coriander and get slurping. And for the rest of the week… If, like me, you always make too many noodles, worry not: they freeze beautifully. Or refrigerate the leftovers and use them to make a nutty salad later in the week – try adding beansprouts, shredded carrot, mouli or kohlrabi, plus masses of fresh coriander and mint, and dress in sesame oil, fresh lime juice, chopped chillies and fish sauce. Chillies are normally sold in packs, so blitz any extra and freeze them in small portions (they’ll defrost quickly). Or use them to make zhoug, an addictive Yemeni paste that enlivens a heap of different dishes. |

| body | It took 300 of us a year to make 888,246 flowers. We sprayed them red and counted them. Then the Beefeaters counted them. This was vital – every lost soldier had to be represented’ Paul Cummins, artist One rainy day in 2012, I ducked into my local library for shelter and, for some reason, started looking at wills. I found one written by a woman from Derby who had disguised herself as a man and gone off to fight – and die – in the first world war. She had written her will phonetically, which made it easier for me to read as I’m dyslexic. That was one reason why I connected with it. Another was the phrase: “Blood swept lands and seas of red where angels fear to tread.” It leapt out at me, made me think about the war’s death toll. With a bit of research, I discovered that there had been 888,246 British and Colonial military fatalities. I decided to represent those deaths through ceramic flowers, something I had first started making at university. Ceramics are transient and fragile, like we are. They feel part of our very humanity – societies have always been carbon-dated by their ceramics and pottery. I considered making roses, which symbolised sacrifice in Victorian times, but I settled on the poppy because of its links to WAR and remembrance. I needed a large space so that people could walk all around the installation. While I wanted it to be free, I was keen to have a venue that was historically significant. The Tower of London was the fourth place I tried. I got put through to someone by sheer chance: the Tower’s deputy governor has a friend also called Paul Cummins and they thought I was him. I didn’t stop talking until a meeting had been agreed. Then I did lots of drawings and presented them with a flower I’d made to show them what it might look likeMaking nearly one million ceramic poppies is a long process. Each had six petals, one for each charity I wanted to support with money raised from selling the poppies afterwards. I did nothing but make flowers for almost a year: 300 people at three different sites rolled, cut and shaped every poppy by hand. Each one is unique. By the time we’d stacked them all up to dry, on piles of boards raised by bricks, the studio looked like it was full of trenches. We sprayed them red and counted them in and out, then the Beefeaters counted them all again at the Tower. This was vital. Every single life had to be represented. A huge team of volunteers planted them all in the moat. One, a soldier who’d been injured by an explosion in Afghanistan that had killed half his regiment, told me the poppies he was planting represented the friends he had lost. As you looked out onto the sea of red, you felt overwhelmed by the thought of so many people sacrificing themselves for what we have now. Tom Piper, designer Of course it was an exciting and bold project, but at the point of planning I was worried that there would be so much first world war memorabilia and associated events that people wouldn’t be interested and that first world war fatigue would have set in. I started thinking about whether there was a way it could relate more closely to, and engage with, the Tower itself. Given that you can’t see the moat until you’re right on top of it, we needed something you could see from a distance. So I designed Weeping Window: the moment you came out of the tube station, you could see poppies cascading out of the Tower’s bastion window. It became the starting point, the place all the poppies flowed out from and crept around the Tower. A second section, Wave, was visible from across the river. ‘The success took us all by surprise’ … Tom Piper, left, and Paul Cummins at the Tower. ‘The success took us all by surprise’ … Tom Piper, left, and Paul Cummins at the Tower. Photograph: David Levene for the Guardian Planting all 888,246 poppies was a huge undertaking. It became a piece of performative art lasting four months, with people watching the volunteers at work and often applauding. Many of the planters had service backgrounds and brought their own powerful stories. Others identified an individual flower with a relative who’d died in the war and thus the planting became ever more meaninful i sprayed contour guidance lines around the moat for the volunteers to follow, but they quickly started doing their own thing – putting higher ones in with lower ones and mixing things up, so that some areas were densely populated, others sparse. It made for a more living organic piece with its own natural energy and flow. The Tower didn’t do a massive publicity campaign. Nobody really knew what we were doing. As we were planting, people would ask: “What are you up to?” So its huge success took us all by surprise. It was a genuine word of mouth phenomenon. The last poppy went in on 11 November 2014 and the next day we started taking it down. There were calls to save the poppies, but we needed to get the flowers to the people who had bought them, not least as Paul had to recoup the costs of making them and get the promised money to the six charities. Two sections, Weeping Window and Wave, were bought and gifted to the nation, which meant we could tour them around Britain. By the time we finish in November, as many as five million people around the country will have seen the poppies. |

"body": "It took 300 of us a year to make 888,246 flowers. We sprayed them red and counted them. Then the Beefeaters counted them. This was vital – every lost soldier had to be represented’\n\nPaul Cummins, artist\nOne rainy day in 2012, I ducked into my local library for shelter and, for some reason, started looking at wills. With a bit of research, I discovered that there had been 888,246 British and Colonial military fatalities.\n\nI decided to represent those deaths through ceramic flowers, something I had first started making at university. Ceramics are transient and fragile, like we are. They feel part of our very humanity – societies have always been carbon-dated by their ceramics and pottery. I considered making roses, which symbolised sacrifice in Victorian times, but I settled on the poppy because of its links to WAR and remembrance.\nI needed a large space so that people could walk all around the installation. Every single life had to be represented.\n\nA huge team of volunteers planted them all in the moat. | body | Billing itself “the experts’ guide to the best pizza places in the world”, Where to Eat Pizza features 1,705 pizzerias. Now its compiler, Daniel Young, has revealed the restaurant that received the most nominations from the guide’s 1,077 contributors: Pepe in Grani, Caiazzo, Campania Naples may be square one of the pizza world, writes Young, but Caiazzo, a hilltop town some 30 miles north, has emerged as its ground zero or rather its kilometre zero. As a proponent of the Kilometro Zero movement (KM0), Franco Pepe is a local hero, in every sense. He sources mostly from nearby producers. It is only people who travel great distances to Pepe in Grani, his stone-walled pizza palazzo. Franco Pepe is passionate about using pizza to promote this part of Campania and the artisanal food producers with whom he works. He has even revived an ancient wheat not produced for 50 years for use in his handmade dough. Tomato sauce is made from heritage tomatoes; the oil comes from ancient groves a few kilometres away. His mastery covers the three stages of pizza preparation: the before (dough analysis, preparation and maturation), the during (shaping the dough, arranging toppings, cooking) and the after (finishing touches). From a growing list ofpizzas on his menu comes the Pinsa conciata del ’500, topped with conciato romano cheese, fig preserve from the Cilento, basil, and lardo from Nero Casertano pigs; and Il Sole nel Piatto (sunshine on a plate) with buffalo mozzarella, tiny Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes, Cetara anchovies, basil, extra virgin olive oil and Caiazzo olives True pizza lovers who can’t bear to tear themselves away can stay the night in one of two stylish bedrooms – directly above the raising rooms, where the next day’s batch of dough will be gently rising to perfection. |
